I am 18 weeks pegnant and as of yesterday I have been getting a sore throat. I'm not sure about taking over the counter cough medicine. Does anyone have any safe alternatives?

What can I do next?

Gargle with salt water.... about 3 times a day or more.
It will also stave off or prevent a head cold from developing and sinuses.

this does work. I even read about it.

All the best,
Susan

The oldest recipe in the book:

2 tsp salt+2 tsp lemon juice+ 1/2 cup hot water( hot as you can stand)

Mix well, gargle for as long as you can. do this before meals and right before bed.

Garlic in foods and lemon in drinks will get the job done quick.

Good Luck & get better soon!!

Hi J.,
For a sore throat, I gargle with hot salt water three times a day. It helps relieves the pain in my throat, especially when I swallon. If I feel like I'm coming down with something (runny nose, cold), I'll take AirBorne as it is full of vitamins and it prevents the cold from coming on. It works for me every time! I hope this helps you too. Feel better soon.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

Try gargling with salt water. That and cough drops are perfectly safe. If your throat is still sore after the weekend or it gets really bad, I'd go to the doctor just to make sure you don't have strep or another kind of infection causing your sore throat. There are several antibiotics that are safe during pregnancy and letting an infection go untreated is definitely not good for growing a baby. Congratulations on your pregnancy and feel better soon!

Gargle with apple cider vinegar every 10-15 minutes. Sounds ridiculous, but it really works!

Hi J.,

You can gargle a solution of water with one drop of melaleuca oil. It not only sooths but will also heal irritation and bacterial or fungal infection. The oil is penetrating so gargle for a minute. It doesn't taste real good but who cares if you get relief.

Hope you feel better soon!

Activate liquid zeolite in Natural Cellular Defense is a 100% natural, safe, and science-based detoxifying agent that removes toxins, heavy metals, carcinogens, and viral sub-particles at the cellular level. It is safe for pregnant and nursing women and children.
According to emedicinehealth, sore throats are commonly caused by viruses. Also, here is an excerpt from The Toxin-Zeolite FAQ Guide: "In addition to its broad-spectrum antiviral properties, zeolite boosts immune function which protects the body and helps fight infection. By interfering with viruses themselves and boosting immunity, zeolite may offer the right combination of safe, natural immune support necessary for optimal health."
The best and logical way to good health is the removal of the cause of the illness--this is what Natural Cellular Defense does. Other means would be just to patch the symptoms so that the condition still lingers and comes on and off.
Natural Cellular Defense may be purchased directly through www.mywaiora.com/502042. Let me answer any questions you may have regarding NCD and its wholesome benefits.
I have been using it for over three years now and am hardly bothered by a cold during these times. The body heals itself if we keep our immune system strong.

Like Missy said, salt water works wonders. You won't notice a change right away, but do it at night before bed and your throat will feel much better the next morning.
Stay away from cough drops that contain menthol, it can cause pre-term labor, but non-menthol drops are great.
Also hot chamomile tea with honey coats your throat and really helps it.

Gargling with salt water is a great idea. Also recommend drinking hot water with lemon and honey to coat your throat. There's also Ricola cough drops (now in berry flavor - sold at Trader Joe's). Airborne may taste good but does not provide any remedy whatsoever (recent studies proved that it is not a preventative). Slippery Elm tea is also good but not sure if that is OK to take while pregnant. Good luck!

If you have a sore throat cough medicine won't help you anyway. The warm salt water gargle is hands down the best thing for a sore throat. Also, hot water with honey and lemon is soothing, and helps to to get your fluids.

I wish I had some magic cure, but really it will just have to run its course. Sorry!

Before I sign off, I just wanted to say that it is not true that any homeopathic remedy is safe during pregnancy. That is not true. Homeopathic remedies can and do have side effects. Always check before you take any remedy. :o)

I hope you feel better soon!

Salt water gargle. Also there is a throat comfort tea available that I believe should be safe for you to use.. If not that tea, just use a good peppermint tea.
