Hi, I went to the doctors today to find out if I'm having a boy or girl. I am 16 weeks today. AS he was doing the sonogram he couldn't tell if It was a boy or girl. He said usually if it's a boy, it would be easy to tell, so he thinks it's a girl, but not sure. Now i have to wait a whole month again before I find out. So does this automatically mean I'm having a baby girl, because he couldn't tell at 16 weeks?? Any advice would be awesome. Thank you.

What can I do next?

In my understanding, it's virtually unheard of to find out gender with any kind of certainty at 16 weeks. Personally, I was told at six months that I was having a girl. I found out at 8 months that I'd need to replace all the pink with blue.

I was mad, and I did some reading - something like 85% of fetuses called girls will be girls, and 90something% of the ones called boy are boys. Everything, apparently, depends on position and technical skill.

Good luck.

no it doesnt automatically mean that you are having a girl. unborn babies live in very tight quarters, and get themselves into some pretty weird positions. it could be that your baby is just positioned in a way that is hiding the genital area. When discovering the sex of my son at 20 weeks, it took three differnet doctors to look, and try to get the baby to move around. It's not always easy. So you may be having a boy or it could be a girl. Maybe at 20 weeks they will be able to tell. Or just maybe your baby wants it to be a surprise. Good Luck with your pregnancy.

It doesn't mean a thing. You usually can't tell for sure the sex of the baby until they are at least 20 weeks. So, waiting a month is very smart. Dont start buying girl clothes yet! That is the hardest part of the pregnancy, i think, is waiting to find out what it is!!! Well, good luck with the next sonogram!

dont jump to the conclusion of a girl we couldnt see till 20 weeks its the best time to find out and worth the wait! On the other hand one of the ladies from church was told early it was twin girls and it ended up being twin boys... definately do the 20 week sonogram!

I had a friend who was told all the way through her pregnancy that she was having a girl. She decorated her nursery with pink curtains and linens. Then, she delivered a beautiful baby boy!

So, no this does not automatically mean you are having another daughter.

It would be a good guess your having a girl, however the best way iis around the fifth month. Also if it is a boy the doctor is right easier to see. If you are startig the babies room early maybe do things with neautral tones or colors that can be changed if it turns out to be a boy many of our friends have been suprised when doc says its a boy! and they thought it was a girl....or even more so sometimes the umbillica cord gets in the way and leads you to think its a boy....lol. I think just be blessed everything is normal and 24 weeks from now the lil joy will be in your hands God Bless

No, it doesn't mean you're having a girl. The baby was just being uncooperative with the pics. They baby was probably just in a position where the sono couldn't get a clear pic of the goods.

With both of my kids my doctor told me he could not tell me the sex until 20 weeks. The baby boys things don't emerge until 18 weeks most of the time if you get a ultrasound before that, the doctor won't see anything making you think you are having a girl. Well I hope this helps.

The baby was probably just in a position where they couldn't tell the gender. Don't get your mind set on it being a girl cause you're still early. My cousin had about 3 or 4 songrams throughout her pregnancy, each time they told her it was a girl. When she gave birth, it was a boy. Sonograms are not always 100% accurate. My point is, don't go and buy everything pink and do your nursery in princess theme. :) You just might be surprised! I understand you anxiety though. I am 10 weeks pregnant and I can't wait to find out! Congrats and Good luck!!

Nope, it is still up for debate. Ultrasounds are not always right, so do not go out and paint the nursery pink, yet.
Ask if you can go to see a perinatologist, like Dr. Harstad at Texas Perinatal Group. Usually, the best time to see gender is around 20 weeks as things are fully developed in that area at that time. TPG has high tech ultrasounds that are great at determining sex. Also, does your doctor have a 3D ultrasound? That is a great way to get a full look at your baby. Good luck.

Not necessarily. However, they can usually tell by the heartrate. - Normally, boys will have a lower heart rate, between 120 and 130; whereas, girls will have a higher heart rate, between 140 and 150. If you are unsure, ask the doctor how much the baby's heart rate is. Good luck!

I was 15 weeks when they said they were pretty sure it was a girl. But they said do not buy pink yet. Then I had to go back at 20 weeks to find out for sure, it was a girl. U never know I guess. I wouldn't go on a shopping spree buying girl things until I know for sure.

Hi N.

Well with my first 2 pregnancys the Military doctors could not tell me, I guess it was they had people try to sue them when they got it wrong. The 3rd one, I was about 20 weeks when the doctor told me, but I was seeing a Gentic Doctor that day, (I was in for addtional testing for Downs Syndrom)and it was plain as day it was a boy. Like others said he/she maybe camera shy and keeping their legs closed.

Just pray he/she is healthy because thats all that really matters.

Congrats and good luck.
Dee

NO it doesn't automatically mean that just because they can't see the "turtle" that it's a girl. The docs told me that between 15-20 weeks is a good time. I went at 20 weeks and the told me w/in 30 seconds. I would just wait til your next checkup. it also depends on how he/she moves. Just be patient.

Hi N.,
I do not believe that it means that you are definatly having a girl. I had the same trouble with my ultrasounds. They could not tell because of the position the baby was in. I kept getting, I THINK it is a girl. I got that about 3 times, that all they did was think. So I went out and bought all pink things and was praying they were right. Thank God they were...lol. A little about me is I am 24, have been an army wife for almost 7 years, I have a 5 year old and a 2 month old, both girls
