I am six months pregnant and my doctor suggested that I not go to the tanning bed. I am not an avid tanner but I am in a wedding the first of March and would not like to look like a big pasty tomato(in my red bridesmaid dress). Does anyone have any advice or previous experience that is similar?? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am not going to tan in the tanning bed. I may just be white for the wedding. After all, I'm pregnant, who cares. :-)

Try an airbrush tan! I tanned in the tanning beds almost every day for 10 years then got pregnant and had to stop. I got an airbrish tan at Eclipse Sunless Tanning and I go to them whenever I need a tan now. It lasts 5-7 days and it's sugar based so it's safe to use when pregnant. I am so relieved to have found a tanning alternative.

I am a Tanning Salon owner, I have this question all the time. We do not allow pregnant women to Tan because of Ins. reasons. But, it is not harmful to the baby its you because of Hormone imbalalnces you can overheat and pass out. I would not recommend it at all. We tell women to use the Airbrush system its more expensive but it looks much better. Just what ever you do do not Tan in a bed at all.

Doctors do not want you to go into the tanning bed because of the risk of your insides heating up and your baby sufferin from the heat...they now have the booths that you can go into to tan it is a spray tan and it last couple weeks and it doesnt look fake like the self tanning it is done professionally and i think it is much safer to do it artificially instead of taking the risk for you be safe for the baby

check with the tanning beds in your area and see if they offer the spray on options... it's a little more predictable than your run of the mill spray on's from wal-greens... Planet Beach has a Mystic Tan which is suppused to be safe during pregnancy... good luck!

Hi A., I would not risk my baby's life for a temorary tan. Instead, I would use a self-tanning lotion that will give you the glow you want without the health risks involved for you or your baby. Most self tanning lotions are sold at stores like Wal-mart and CVS. I would start self tanning now so you can built up your tan by the time the wedding comes around. Good luck!!

I'm going to be 7 months pregnant for my sister's wedding in June, so when it gets to be that time I plan on going to get one of those spray on tans. i have not had luck with self tanners in the past, but my friend goes and gets a spray on tan all the time and she looks great. I'll probably try a practice round a couple months before just in case. Everything I have read says that tanning beds are a big no-no but spray ons or lotions are prfectly safe.

Hey A.,
Unfortunately the heat of a tanning bed is not so safe for a little one in the belly (nor is a heating pad, hot tub, or even a hot bath!) If you want a nice, natural tan, I suggest "Jergens Natural Glow" lotion. It does not turn you orange, it is about $5.00 a bottle (lasts a long time), it is gradual, and being a daily moisturizing lotion, it is great for the skin.
I have used a tanning bed a bit, and the tan accelerator that you can buy at the salon is alot less natural than the Jergens product.

Hi A.--

Best not to go to the tanning bed early in pregnancy, but for me, I avoided it the entire pregnancy just because I didn't want to take any chances. I would find a tanning salon that does Mystic Tan or Airbrushing (my personal choice) and do that a day before the wedding. Good luck, I am sure you will look great!

I am 8 months pregnant and have been using Coppertone Sunless Tanning Lotion my whole pregnancy. I use a moisturizer after I get out of the shower anyway so every other day I use the sunless tanner instead. It keeps my skin looking touched by the sun and if I need it darker I'll use it every day for a few days. It's not really expensive and I've never had a problem with it streaking or being splotchy. It goes on just like lotion and it moisturizes your skin too! You can find it at any drugstore and most grocery stores too. Hope it helps!!

Hello there! My advice would be to not get into a tanning bed. They have those spray on tans and those work really well. Just make sur you try it out on your skin way before the wedding to make sure you like the color that it will turn you. Those are harmless, but you still might inform your doctor that you are going to do that. If that doesn't work well there are always the rub on tans.

DON'T GO TANNING! It is bad for you and BAD for the baby! You will even see signs in a tanning salon NOT to tan if you are prego! It is better to look pasty than to do any sort of damage to your unborn baby. If you are that concerned with it, I would use a self tanner or something.

It is not a good idea to tan. The temperature of your body is not suppose to get too hot. It is very bad for your baby. You aren't suppose to sit in very warm bath water either. There is a lotion out that is not an actual liquid tanner. Its Jergins brand I believe. It doesnt give you a tan right away, but I saw results on my face after just a few days. The lotion is white in color and leaves no streaks or orange color. It gives you a good golden natural color.

Self-tanners and spray tans. They do a great job and there's no harm of UV rays. I work for a health club which offers both tanning beds and spray tans. We do all spray tans by hand, so the tan is very even. I'm not sure where Heflin is located, but we are in Baton Rouge on Florida Blvd. If we're too far away, call other tanning salons and health clubs in your nearest large town to see what they have to offer. My suggestion is to try it now to see if you like it, or if the color needs to be adjusted, so have just the right color when it comes that time. It takes about 5-10 days for the tan to wear off completely, depending on how much you exfoliate, so I'd get started tomorrow. You only have a couple of cycles before then. :) Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to e-mail me if you need any more help.

oh yeah, and as far as the toxins from the sprays are concerned, while there isn't a ton of info on the inhalation of the substances, the product is heavy and usually gets caught in the nose hairs. It's a fine mist, but not so fine that it creates any breathing difficulties. We've never had a complaint. And, the product we use is made with vitamin e and aloe, so it's great for your skin, to boot! I've known women who have used Mystic Tan and liked the results, but when they were sprayed by us, they liked hand spraying even better. It's more even and we can see the natural color of your skin to try to mix the solutions to give you that perfect glow.

Good Luck

I worked at a tanning bed for several years and all of my training I had, said don't do it. If you would like to be a little tanner you should try the spray on tanning that they have now, most tanning salons have them and I know several pregnant women who have gone and had no problems. Hope this helps!

Hi A.... how about trying the spray on tannning. I'm sure you have some hard to reach places but if you get a friend to gowith you, she could rub ya down after the spray. It only takes about 5 minutes. If you go about 3 times I think you would look great.

I was pregnant last year when I was in a wedding. I went to a salon that does spray tanning. I made an appointment to get sprayed 2 days before the wedding. This is best because the first day, you look a little orange, but then all of a sudden you'll notice that it has blended in and you look wonderful. It stays for about a week. I would suggest this tactic. It's a lot safer and it doesn't dry out your skin!

The tanning bed (or lying on the beach in direct sun) can injur your baby - he/she gets real hot and can be like a heat stroke - they have a great new thing that sprays a mist on you which develops to peak in 24 hours. try it out before the wedding - costs about $25 and looks great without burning the baby. Tanning places will not let you tan - they don't want to get sued if your baby is injured, or worse - brain damaged. I don't want to freak you out, but this is soooo important!

hi ashely. i have a friend who suffers from severe psoriasis, and tanning or sun exposure is one of the things that keeps her outbreaks down. her doctor told here that it was alright to tan in very limited amounts- i think no more than 5-10 mins per session. I think the real danger is when you get your body temp too high, just like in a hot tub. Hope this helps. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your decision.

I would not go to a tanning bed as the increased heat/body temp. could harm the baby. I also would avoid the spray on tans from a toxin stand point. It is best to do what is right for baby and be a little pale(-:

Try spray on tanning, either at the salon or the do-it-yourself. But ask the doctor if those chemicals might harm the baby also. If you only have to do it one or twice before the wedding, it's got to be better than the weeks of bed tanning you'll have to do with the same results. They actually have some really good products out there now, but do you research and make sure the one you choose it right for your skin tone.

I used the Coppertone self-tanner when I was pregnant and my son is fine. I tried the Clinique kind, but it didn't match my skin tone very well. Coppertone in the 'dark' version works great and looks natural. I am not dark complected, but I figure if you're trying to get tan, why buy the 'light' and have to put it on 3 times as often. =) It's cheap too!

I have been preg twice and both times asked my doctors this same question. I was told to not use a tanning bed even it is only once or twice. I was told that if I felt like this was something I had to do I could use a self tanning lotion, which I have never found one that I liked or do the spray tan at the tanning salon, which I never did so I am not sure what it would look like afterwards. My doctors did caution me that there have never been any studies done on the lotion or sprays and pregnancy. Hope this helps a bit.

A. - try to airbrush on a wonderful tan! It looks TOTALLY natural (if you don't get too close with the airgun!) and I find it to look more natural than tanning lotions. You can find it at CVS or Walgreens. Get in the shower and let your hubby have a blast spraying that stuff all over you. It really is fun! I've been tanning for years until I was finally diagnosed with melanoma and would not EVER get back into any of those beds.
I finally realized that God made us in our colors for a reason, you look perfect just the way you are!

Dear A. - why even risk it? There are so many things unknown about how things may harm us or our unborn child. So, you will be a bit "white"... but being an incredible mom outweighs that by a million. Don't get caught up on "appearances". Use tanning lotion if you must.

I would suggest using the one time spray on tan. If that is not fizable then try the rub on instant tanner but absoluely do not tan in the bed that can cause downsyndrome in your child. Nothing is worth that. LOL, C.
