Pre School in SLC

My daughter turned 4 in January and I'm looking to start her in Pre School for one year before kindergarten. Intellectually, she's very bright, but we've had some behavioral issues. I'm looking for a smaller place, but one where she can still socialize and get a little bit more traditional education before starting kindergarten.
Preferably this would be some place that's affordable, or is willing to work with families. Also some place where parent interaction is encouraged as well as free thinking.
Thanks so much!

We LOVED Jacque's preschool, in Taylorsville. Jacque (that is pronounced Jackie, strangely) has training as a teacher and 30 years experience with preschool kids. Many of the parents of the kids in my son's class went there when they were kids too. The program is exceptional, and the kids learn so much both socially and academically. Jacque really understands the developmental needs of preschool kids well. She does well with promoting learning, has good classroom structure, and the rest of the teachers are so skilled as well. The differences I saw in my son before and after preschool were pretty amazing. He was more independent, had better social skills, was comfortable with a classroom setting, had better manners, and specific academic skill he needed to be ready for kindergarten. And he thought it was so much fun. :o)

My kids go to a preschool that sounds like it would be a good fit for you. It is called Holladay Preschool. It's philosophy is right in line with what you are looking for. It is very much based on social learning, child-driven creativity & art and community & parent involvement. The tuition is very reasonable and they have great teachers. At the very least, I would call them right away & get her name on the waiting list ###-###-####). Then I would go check them out and decide if it's a good fit for you. They would be happy to give you a tour & discuss their programs with you.

If it's not a good fit, or if it's not in a good location for you, feel free to message me - I have a list of comparable preschools throughout Salt Lake. I even have all of their phone numbers and some updated tuition & schedule information. If you tell me what area you are interested in, I'd be happy to share the information I have with you. Good luck!

The Child and Family Development Center at the University of Utah is a fantastic program. They definitely encourage parent interaction - they expect you to participate in class at least once a month, and you are welcome to be there at any time.

As for affordability, their program is neither cheap nor expensive. They do have various payment plans available, and there is financial aid available, but I can't provide details about that I have no personal experience with it.

The downside - since it is a well-run, well-known, effective program, it has a waiting list. Still, I'd encourage you to pop in and visit. If you like what you see, you do have a chance of getting in for the autumn term. I've manage to get a child in for a fall start when I put our names on the waiting list around this time of year.

Go up to the University of Utah, on President's Circle, to the Emery Building (it's the one just east of the museum, I think it says AEB on the door). They have an AMAZING preschool there. It is run by the Family & Consumer Studies department, and it is the lab school for students majoring in Human Development. What this means is that there is a very well trained head teacher (has a degree in human development and especially early childhood and has also studied early childhood education), often an assistant, and then student teachers - people who are now working on their degrees. They are closely supervised by the head teacher, and it gives the class a much better student/teacher ratio. Also, they encourage parents to be active (there is a lower price if you come help out a few times during the semester). They also are well informed on what is normal for kids, and how to deal with behavior challenges, etc. My kids went there (and I went through the program) and I loved it!

They are taking applications already (you may need to get on a waiting list for now). It follows the university schedule, too. I'd check it out right away so you have the option if you like it

East High school has a good program for just $45/month. I know they are filling spots quickly, but you could check. Good luck!

I am not sure where you live in Salt Lake, but I run a preschool out of my home in South Jordan. I currently have students that drive from Salt Lake for my 2 or 3 day preschool. I used to be an elementary school teacher and I have my Masters in Education. I have a few spots left for next year. Check out my blog and please email or call if you have any questions. Good luck with your decision.

Try the school district you live in. We are in Granite school district and they have preschools in some of the Elementary Schools. They encourage parents to come in and help. It is only part time. I think some of the charter schools have preschool programs.
