Hello ladies. My son will be 2 years old next week. Since it usually takes a while to get your child into a good pre-school we are doing our research now. So I was hoping that you ladies can give me some suggestions on great pre-schools in Austin. We live very far south. So I would like a school that is south of downtown. If it is really great I would be willing to travel a little more north. I know there are a lot of daycare facilities, but I am looking for more of a school setting than daycare. Also, please share any schools to stay away from. He went to Primrose in Shady Hollow for a while and it was a terrible experience. We don't want to relive that! Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

My kids go to Young People's Workshop in Westlake. It may be farther north than you want to go if you're south, but we love it, so I thought I'd mention it. It's a Spanish immersion program, which is why I picked it. But the faculty and teachers are wonderful.

I live in far South Austin, too. I'm having a difficult time finding a place for my 2 1/2 year old son. But, these are the waiting lists he is on--these places are really, really great--Bethany Lutheran west of Brodie on Slaughter; Habibi's Hut, which is off Ben White and Manchaca; Manchaca Methodist Church right at Manchaca and 1626; Hays Hills Baptist Church; and one on Slaughter--it's a church--and, I can't remember the name of it. It is just east of Brodie. I hope by the time he turns 3 in August he will be in a nice program.

Good luck!

Our daughter was at Stepping Stone Schools from 18 months to 5 years old.. .. The owner is a graduate of the University of Texas and her schools have been awarded all types of recognitions..

Our daughter loved it and we did too. Each school becomes a community.
Our daughter was also very prepared for Kindergarten when the time came. She is a late July Birthday and we had no doubt she was totally prepared..

If you are interested in a play-based, nature -oriented approach that allows for lots of creativity and time for young children to play and grow up before being introduced to academics, I would recommend Starbright Preschool (Manchaca and Ben White area) and Greenwood School (in Oak Hill). Both schools support Waldorf-oriented principles and are also compatible with Montessori and other alternative approaches that respect childhood and encourage active, age-appropriate learning.
