Hey moms! I was recently approach by an old aquantaince and mother of 2 to join Pre-paid legal, either as a customer or as a job. It sounds like a great company not only to work for but for their services they offer as well. Do any of you know anything about it, or work for them. I welcome ALL responses...pros, cons.....The small local jewelry store I was working for decided to file for bankruptcy :( and now I am without a job, and need something! Prepaid legal sounds like it could be a money maker but not sure if I can do it. I have an almost 3 year old and a 4 year old. We don't use daycare, and they aren't in school yet. My husband works evening, and our schedules were great because I would work AM's and come home at 3pm and he would go to work. It's been tough finding a job that has part-time hours like that. Thank you for any input!!

What can I do next?

Pre-paid legal is a pretty much like selling Mary Kay or Tupperware, only the thing you are selling is legal services. You don't really work FOR them. You buy in and have the services, then make a commission selling them to other people and from the commissions they make when THEY "share the opportunity."

In GENERAL these kind of businesses are bigger money-makers for the early joiners because you need to have people UNDER you to sell too, and THEY have to sell it too for you to really make any money.

As with all of these kind of businesses, if you NEED/WANT the product and are willing and able to pay the start-up cost just to have it, even if you never make any income, then go for it... otherwise, I'd look for another part time job :)

Yep, my best friend works for them. He loves it, got my other best friend to join as a customer (she loves it). I could ask him for any details you want to know specifically because I personally don't know much about it.

At one point, I had joined PPL - unfortunately - during my 2 years with them - I never used the services....so i didn't renew my membership...

In order to do PPL as a business - you have to approach friends and family and sell them on the business...can you do that? if not - then this would NOT be the job for you...

You have much to think about - I personally would look at something else...that's me as I don't like to hit up friends and family for my business...

Try doing something that is more fun. It really stinks when you have to go hit up your friends every time you see them just so you can try and make some money. I had a friend do this and I really got tired of her telling me how wonderful the service was and that I should join up. It was annoying that it took control of our friendship.

I really don't mind when my friend calls and says "I am turning in a papered chef order, do you want to join in and save the shipping and handling?". That's something I use and like to shop for. I don't really need legal help fixing pizza or some other meal each day. Pampered chef costs very little and they make all the money almost up front. They buy a kit, have parties, each person pays shipping and handling, the product sold is delivered to the hostess and it is her responsibility to give it out to the people who ordered from her, the checks and all the orders are done and cashed right off. The selling person gets their cut right then. I liked the whole concept but took in some of my grand-kids instead.

I did sell Mary Kay years and years and years ago. I loved the whole concept back then. But like everything else, they wanted to be like everyone else and stopped being unique. I hardly wear makeup anymore sue to Mary Kay changing from the company I liked.

Find something you like that won't drive your friends and family crazy every time you see them and try to sell them something.

Ack, I wouldn't want anything to do with pre-paid legal. Here is the thing, say divorce, they quote $5,000. If I were someone with a simple divorce, they do happen, going to a real attorney would only cost me $1,000. Complicated could go up above $10,000. So they are pretty much making bank on the simple guy and cutting corners on the complicated guy. Neither are getting fair legal representation.

So what I am saying is you will be in a business that gets a lot!!!! of complaints. Plus, other than divorce, you are getting a mess of sue happy people for clients so you can imagine the level of those complaints.

My old roommate used to do it. She kind of hated it, but it helped her earn some money while going to school. They had to cold call and telemarket and they had to buy updated phone lists out of their pocket for people to call. That was 10 years ago, maybe it's changed since then.

Hi K.! Let me first say I'm sorry for your job loss. But I want to congratulate you on a new chapter in your life! And on being open to starting your own business in direct sales! I am a mother of 5 & I own my own company w/ Arbonne. It has been such a blessing because owning your own business means YOU pick when you work. I have a couple friends who do pre-paid legal I've heard they are a great company to work with. When looking for a business to start #1 is doing something that's "consumable" meaning something people will use over & over. And in this economy that's a smaller field (women will never give up certain things :) and people always need legal help. I hope this helps I wish the best for you & your family. If you have any questions please feel free to message me. G
