Practicing Yoga with a Toddler

Hi! My daughter, age 3, seems interested in trying some yoga moves with me and keeps mentioning so. I'd like to include her, so I am wondering if you all know of any good DVDs or books that show ways that families can practice yoga together? I want to include her, but I also know that her attention span is about 20 minutes tops. I see there are a few out there especially designed for kids, but are there any good ones where we can do it together?

Okay, I know I have only received one response, but it was so off the mark that I need to clarify. I am not by any means "pushing" my daughter into anything, nor am I looking to go out and buy a ton of stuff. My question was simply: are there any good books or DVDs that people have used that they would recommend?

Please don't comment unless you actually have a book or DVD to recommend.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Oh, boy! I hope my reaction to the first response wasn't harsh, as Aileene says. I just really didn't want other mothers to feed off of the first comment and think I was pushing my daughter in any direction, or that I would go out an set up a kiddie-size studio for my daughter. LOL!!

I cherish all of the advice given and have checked out a few books and DVD's from the library and called local yoga shops. I even received a great side message about a yoga studio that has family yoga. This is why I love Mamapedia.

Just another note... as I suspected, her attention span is short, but it is fun to see her so excited to practice yoga with me. I just love my little yogi!

We really like the book Little Yoga: A Toddler's First Book of Yoga by Rebecca Whitford and Martina Selway. There is also a sequel, Sleepy Little Yoga. My 2 and half year old and five and a half year old both enjoy doing the positions and reading the book.

Hope this helps!!

I don't know what you have for cable/satelite,etc, but my on-demand has kids yoga. The channel is Sportskool or something like that. My kids like it.

Also, on the kids' channel Sprout, during the GoodNight Show, Nina does "Stretching with Nina" at the same time every night. Basically, she teaches one yoga stretch every night in kid-friendly terms. If you want to look at them online, they are here: http://www.sproutonline.com/shows/good-night-show

Sorry, not a specific book or DVD, but helpful I hope :)

I do P90X and my kids join in for what they want to. After they tire out, they just go one their merry way but it's fun while they are there. All your daughter needs to see is that good diet and exercise is a good thing. Don't push her, I wouldn't go out and start buying tons of stuff. Yoga is simple, let her copy you and maybe go get her a mat but that's about it for now.

I have no book or DVD to recommend. I will comment anyway. :)

Have you searched Amazon, google or anywhere? I pulled up a lot of results.

And I wouldn't be too harsh on someone mentioning "don't push her". I'm sure you're not, so it's great that you and another mom think alike!

What a great idea! Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you, except that my dd has also shown some interest in doing yoga and I'm hoping to get her doing my "yoga for relaxation" with me regularly! I took her to a "baby & me" yoga class once (when she was about 2) and she loved it!! Maybe you could contact your local yoga studios and ask for suggestions (or if they have a class that's open to kids)?? Good luck mama and have fun!

My future sil just completed a yoga training and the kids had a blast doing poses with her when she was in town. After she went back home, I made yoga cards with pictures of the different poses they really liked. I created child friendly pictures to help with some of their favorite poses and creates some new ones based on other animals they were familiar with. Cards got laminated and are a huge hit. My 23 month old pulls out the cards herself and will often play yoga with my almost 4 year old without me. They also like having their own mats- regular ones cut in half.

First off, I am so sorry that you received an obnoxious response. My daughter loves to do yoga DVD's with my husband, and she started around your daughter's age. We just have a Gaiam standard yoga DVD, but there are plenty of yoga videos available for streaming on Netflix, Hulu, etc. I like Kathy Smith, personally.

Also, I don't know where in the city you're located, but my daughter took at kids yoga class at The Yoga Boutique (near Irving Park and Lake Shore Dr.) and loved it. I would've sent her again, but she's in school more hours now that she's in pre-K.

Good luck!

I just got one from our library, Yoga Kids. It is mainly for kids, but you could always do the same poses and it is pretty good. I know our library alai has free classes for parent/child yoga so maybe check there or a Y or community Center. If not just start with some of the more basic moves together. That is great that she wants to do it to, such a great exercise.

We also do the kids Yoga on Demand. It's about 10 minutes and it starts with the kids doing some poses and then it has "Do Tegether" time in which the parents and kids do some poses together. It then ends with relaxation time. You can find it on Comcast's ON Demand under kids, then Kids Fin Fitness, then choose which one you want to do. My 5 year old LOVES this channel, it's fun to participate with her, and it's short enough that she is able to complete the whole thing! Good luck!

Hi M.,

I don't know of anything to recommend, but I have a yoga studio I love that sometimes teaches kid classes. It's Power Yoga on Main in Downers Grove, you may want to check out their facebook page or given them a call, they might be able to offer resources for you. Sorry I can't help more than that.....
