Potty Training -- Skipping Pullups -- What About Cloth Diapers???

My daughter will be 2 and a half in a week. I'm anxious to get started on potty training and know it really has to be her idea. I've been putting her on the potty to see if she's scared or what her reaction is and she's been fine all along. When I ask now just to try and get her to learn the words, she knows exactly what I'm saying about "do you want to go potty?" or " lets go to the potty" she also gets all excited when we do the "peepee in the potty, pee pee in the potty" dance...

I've read (lots on here actually, THANKS ALREADY!) about potty training and I think I'd prefer to just go to big girl panties and help her to learn that route, vs Pull Ups. My question now is about cloth diapers. Do those have the same effect of panties vs regular diapers? Do they still feel immediately or not. I have NO idea!! I figured that could be a good first step...

My other concern is that my daughter is so small still! We are between a 12 month and 18 month size pants, and that's with a diaper on. Therefore, are there panties out there small enough for her tiny hiny???

Any insight will be very well appreciated. We are also moving into our first home beginning of August so I thought this would be a good chance to transition all at once. I've decided against converting the bed in efforts of keeping something the same but still would like to give potty training a chance.

I have learned through you moms already (thanks AGAIN!) that its got to be her idea or will just cause unnecessary stress in everyone's lives...

Thanks for your two cents! Its appreciated!!
~T.~

Hi T.,

The Gerber cloth training pants are great. I found that I needed about 9 pairs, they come 3 to a pack and are available (Target, Walmart, etc) in a size that will fit your daughter

I would caution you about trying to make the move AND potty training transition all at once. Either stage in a child's life is a big experience and the fact that you are moving just might be all a 2-1/2 year old can handle. It is really best to keep things as much the same as possible for a while at moving time and after. Let her get used to her new surroundings and then go for the potty training. I think it's still great to keep practicing the entire time, but I wouldn't recommend hitting the potty training really hard until she's adjusted to the new home. I also found that the reward of a sticker for trying OR doing something in the potty was a really big incentive.

Good luck with the move and the training!

I use cloth at home and I think it is great for them to be able to fell wet. I use pull-ups for outings and Mother's Day Out. However, I think it would be way more effective being at home 100%.If you have any ? I would be happy to talk with you.
PM me for my ph# :) Liz

Call Bree at ###-###-####. She's my partner in our diaper delivery service (which is probably too late to start that) but she has a wealth of information on cloth diapers, the cloth diaper equivalent to pull-ups, etc. She has a store where you can actually touch and feel and get advice.

Just FYI - cloth diapered babies usually train up to a year earlier than those with disposables and you save about $2500 in the long run (and be environmentally friendly!).

I'm lucky my 3 yr old is training himself for the most part. I'm not using pullups with this kid. I have used them in the past. They are too expensive for one to use. They used to make and think they still do training pants. They are thicker than panties or undies.

I don't really know much about potty training girls. However, I do know about having the problem of having a small child. I was in your same situation with the underwear when my son was potty trained. I at first had a friend sew the back of his underwear up so they would fit but then one day while I was in KidtoKid in Arlington I found some underwear that where a size 1, which I had been looking everywhere for, so I bought them and they fit. I know they had girls panties there where a size 1 but this was 3 years ago. Yes they where new underwear but they cost me quite a bit so that is something to keep in mind.

I did not do the pull-up thing either but between diapers and underwear we used training pants...really thick cloth undies and sometimes the plastic pants on top of that. It worked really well for my son and definetly supplied the "wet" feeling when he had an accident. I know the trianing pants come in a 12 mo size and can be found at walmart or target. Good luck

Yes she would most defiantly feel the moisture form a cloth diaper, but I don't know that it would be as uncomfortable as the cloth training pants mentioned earlier. We used the cloth training pants and then put a vinyl diaper cover over them. There butt gets a bit sweaty that way but you are not cleaning puddles and not quite puddles up that way. AS far as the tiny hiny goes, good question. The training pants will shrink so if you get the smallest ones available you will probably be ok. Try it and then if they are to big the cloth diapers are the way to go. Good luck!

T.,

My daughter started potty training just over a week ago. I stopped diapers cold turkey during the daytime in cluding naptime. I set the timer every 15-20 min on the microwave and when it beeped we went potty. She now tells me 95 % of the time when she needs to go including the other day in the middle of a movie at the theaters. We went swimming on Saturday and she asked to go potty while she was in the pool. My oppinion is a diaper isa diaper so just go to panties. As for small panties. Gymboree and Gap panties run small. I bought gap panties 2t and they are almost to small and my daughter wears a 18 with diaper and a 12 month with out a diaper.

Whatever you do, once you make the decision to potty train stick with it. I have a friend who went back and forth and 10 months later she is still working on it.

Best of Luck,
M.
