Potty Training Question - Aurora,IL

My son just turned three and is doing great with the potty training. He is in underwear all day and only wears pullups for naps and diapers for night time. What do you use when he needs to be wiped after poo? should I waste money on those Kandoo flushable wipes or does anyone know if regular baby wipes will eventually clog my toilet?

What can I do next?

As the daughter of a plumber let me tell you that no matter what the package said, wipes should never, and I mean never be flushed! They do not breakdown like toilet paper does. If the toilet gets clogged and needs to be rodded they get tangled in the rod. The sewage treatment plant does not like them either again because they do not decompose. A local plumbing magazine did a test of this to prove they should not be flushed. Use them but then dump them in the garbage.

Yes, you cannot use regular wipes. They have to be flushable. If you don't want to shell out for Kandoo, you can get the Equate flushable wipes from WalMart, or Target has their own brand of the same thing. Good luck! My three year old son will only pee on the potty. I wish I could get him to poop on it.

I use baby wipes and then just throw them in the garbage (it's never smelled up my bathroom). I know someone who used the flushable ones and had to have her pipes cleaned out because they cloged things up. It cost her a couple of hundreds of dollers to have the work done. The plumber said that this has been a big problem and to never flush the flushable or regular wipes or femine product down the toilet. Hope this helps.

They may not cause your toilet to clog, but neither are good for your sewage pipe. They will most likely clog the pipes at some point. If you have to use a wet wipe, just throw it out in the garbage.

Baby wipes and diaper liners - regardless of whether they say they are flushable or not - WILL clog up your pipes. If you want to use them, I would suggest using a lidded garbage can with odor-fighting bags and just toss them in there and change the bag regularly. If you're up to being really brave though - it would be better to use a damp washcloth and then just rinse and send it through the laundry instead.

Don't use wipes of any kind to flush. We did and our pump backed up all over the basement. The plumber said none of that should be flushed, only toilet paper. I just use toilet paper and then maybe one wipe and throw it in the garbage.

Kandoo clogged my whole system and the plumber said, do not flush anything that is not toilet paper. We lined our trash with a shopping bag and my son throws his wipes in there if he needs them. In other countries, they don't even flush toilet paper down the toilet.

they will do bad things to your plumbing.... so not worth it.

cottonelle wipes (and the other grown-up brands) work just as well as the kandoo ones and are usually way cheaper. a few of them come in a sensitive skin variety.

put a large ziplock bag in the garbage can by the toilet and use it for the wipes if you need something wet to wipe him with. I just use toilet paper at this point. I figure if he's learning to go potty like a big boy, he needs to wipe like one too. putting anything but tp down your toilet can be really bad...I've had it happen and will never do it again. Even Charmin, or other extra soft tp's are bad for the toilet. My hubby used to flush all kinds of things, and I refused to use anything but Charmine, but then the sewage bubbled up into my bath tub, and under the toilet all over the floor. It took three plumbers (I love unions) to get the problem fixed. My house stunk and had poop flies flying everywhere. It was the most awful experience I've ever had. Nothing in the toilet except 1ply septic safe tp.

Andrea,
Just a word of caution...I used the "flushable" wipes for a few months and they ended up clogging up my sewer pipes. Our toilet and septic system were fairly new and when the plumber came out he said those were the only offenders in the line. I would say avoid them if you can!

Even "flushable" wipes clog toilets. They get caught up in the sewer system on roots or whatever and cause a clog. I had "poop" come up my new spa tub last week from a friend that came over with a baby and that's what the plumber rodded out of the drain pipe. Unfortunately even som kleenex brands take too much time to "break down" the plumber told me. Just shake the poop out of the panties and hand wash over the tub or toilet before they go into the wash machine. By the way, don't confuse him by the diaper on diaper off method. He'll just learn to stop wetting the bed sooner and not pooping at night if the diaper is off all together.

My husband is a plumber and he told me even if it sayd flushable...dont flush it. It is easier to wipe them with something wet and not just regular toilet paper but I would throw it in the garbage when you are done.

Do not flush any wipes unless it states that it is flushable.

And even then, I probably wouldn't flush. They can really mess up your toilets and need major repairs (it's happened to me).

Baby wipes will definitely clog your toilet! Even if they use only one, it's bound to happen. And if they happen to use more than one- call the plumber! We've had it happen to us, and have seen it with others. If you're by a Costco, they sell flushable wipes for much cheaper than anywhere else I've seen.

We use the regular baby wipes and throw them in the trash can. I am afraid they definitely would clog the plumbing!

No don't put regular baby wipes in the toliet. There are generic brands of the wet wipes at Wal-mart and Target. I use them, because now at 5, my oldest feels better and cleaner using the wipes herself.

Regular toilet paper works just fine, but if you want something wet, just moisten it with water. That way you can flush it and you won't have to spend money on wipes.

We used the Kandoo wipes once, saved the container, then bought the generic kind (at Wal Mart) afterwards as a refill. I think regular baby wipes will clog the toilet.

Wipes will clog your toilet. When my son is really messy, I use adult flushable wipes. Charmin or Cottonelle make them and they work pretty well.

If he just turned 3, he should still be supervised in the washroom. I would watch him wipe himself then check to make sure he got everything. Just use toilet paper. If it gets too messy, after using toilet paper, use a baby wipe and throw it in the garbage.

The flushable wipes are well worth the money, but just get the store brand. They are cheaper and serve the same function!

This is a great question, I was hoping you had some responses, cause I too am trying to train my daughter this and wondered the same thing. I think I'm going to contact the 800# on the package and ask this very question. It wouldn't hurt, good luck with the potty traing!!!

Even Kandoo wipes will clog if you have established trees on your street (and in your sewer pipes). Just get your regular TP a little damp in the bathroom sink. Works great.

Besides the Charmin and Cottenelle flushable wipes, there are some good generic ones, if you're concerned about the cost. Walgreens has a good one, for example. But I'd stick with the toilet paper and regular baby wipes (in the garbage) - it worked fine for us!

We used the cottenelle ones 9for "adults") because they were cheaper then the kids ones. We don't flush them though. 3 of our friends have had huge sewer problems because they don't dissolve (like they say) and they get tangled in the little roots and stuff, causing big blockages.

We used to buy Kandoos until I realized how much more money they are than other brands. Flushable wipes don't have to have cute animals on the box... you'll probably pay more, too.

My son seldom used them when he was younger, but his twin sister still likes to use them at age 6. I think soft toliet paper is fine to use on a three year old if it's not a messy #2. Posters have mentioned clogging problems, but I only allow 2 wipes per flush. Once in awhile, she'll ask if she can use another wipe, but then she'll flush a second time.

Note... Walmart is much cheaper than Jewel with these products.

We went to the flushable wipes initially, knowing they were biodegradable. However, we went back to regular wipes, and just don't flush them in the toilet--just like when you change a diaper. My sons are now 4 and 6 and we still ask them to wipe themselves using a baby wipe. I also found that the flushable wipes were big enough. I don't know about you, but I didn't want my hands accidentally getting any poop!
