Can anyone recommend a potty training DVD that would be suitable for a 20 months old boy?

So What Happened?

My son was actually ready when he was about 13 months old. He started going to hide to do his business. I should have listened to my instincts and started then rather than listen to people who insist that boys are not ready before they are 2.5 years old. I am not pressuring him in spite of what some of you might be thinking. This is not about me wanting my son to be potty trained before other kids. It's about me tuning into what he seemed to be trying to tell me from when he was 13 months old. But I ignored it and now I'm afraid it might be too late. He is already used to going into hiding and doesn't get that it's supposed to go into the potty. He goes with us to the bathroom and all. He likes sitting on the potty and reading. He just doesn't grasp that he can do there what he does in his hiding spot. But I have to admit I resent everyone saying I am trying to pressure him and that he's not ready yet. He has been ready for a while and I just ignored the signs because everyone said there was no way he was ready so early. So please, this might seem rude to you, but if you are going to respond with a suggestion to wait till he's at least 2.5 years old, the please don't respond. I am sorry if this seems rude as it is not meant that way.

Unfortunately, I do not have any DVDs to recommend. But, my 19 month old LOVES the Sesame Street book, "It's Potty Time". Loves it. He has been reading it (along with others) on the toliet for about 4 months now.

There's a cute one from Bear in the Big Blue House and Sesame Street makes one, too. Also, we bought my son Potty Elmo and it was a big hit. My 20 month old daughter is now playing with it and we're hoping she gets the idea soon :)
Just remember to keep it light and fun for now, because your son might still be too young to really start formal potty training with him. In my own experience (and stories from friends), boys aren't ready until they're closer to 3 years old.

Hi! I recommend that you go to your public library and see what books and videos they have. Then, if you find one(s) that your child likes, you can then buy it/them.

I figured my son would like the potty videos of Sesame Street and Elmo or other cartoons. Turns out, he liked the one of a 7 year old girl narrating the story of her brother. My son definitely liked the video of real kids over puppets/cartoons, but that might not be the case for everyone. Going to the library saved me $$ because I would have definitely bought the wrong things for him.
My son also liked the potty books, so we ended up buying those after we identified which ones he liked.

Below are some items I found helpful.

Early Start Potty Training by Linda Sonna (book for parents)

I Can Go Potty (video at my Mont County, MD library: VideoJ 649.6ICA)- young girl describing her brother's experience

Once upon a potty (video) - Also has a nice book for boys and girls which my son liked

PJ and Puppy by Cathryn Falwell (children's book)

My Big Boy Potty by Joanna Cole (children's book)

Good luck -- and try to stay patient!

I don't have a suggestion for a dvd but there is a fun sesame street potty game with Elmo at sesameworkshop.org. My son used to love the game. If your son is ready to use the potty he really shouldn't need a game or dvd. We bought some potty books because my son loves books but it turned out to be a waste of money. Perhaps try with just a simple reward and save yourself some money. Good luck to you either way you go.

We used Once Upon A Potty, but I would HIGHLY recommend waiting until your son is really ready, attempting it too early just makes everyone crazy. Another good website for info is www.askdrsears.com.

Good luck, S.

Wait!! Don't bother at this age unless he is really asking to use the potty, otherwise you will drag out the whole process for a very long time and be cleaning up a lot of accidents. I know that desire for the first to be potty trained but most are't ready until 3 or later. If you really wait until they are ready they will be potty trained in a week or less because they will have more bladder control and awareness of the urges. Save yourself a lot of aggravation and wait. Don't let others make you feel like you need to do this now, every child is different and you are the mother! Good luck,
M.

For whatever reason, my daughter loved this DVD called "No More Diapers" that we found at Babies R Us. It is about a little boy bear named Glenn that decides he wants to be a big boy and give up diapers. At first I was skeptical because the first scene was about him loving his diapers, but hang with it because he does decide he loves underwear more. She was trained a week after we got it and she watched it constantly. We also had Potty Power which was entertaining but didn't seem to influence her any. I don't believe that there is any set time to train a boy--I have friends that trained their boys by 15 months. My brother was trained a few months after age 2. If you can do it before it becomes a control issue (and it does around 2 3/4 as I found out the hard way) it is probably much easier. Since you are expecting a new little one, I would try to get him done soon. If you wait, he will regress when the little one comes as my daughter does. Good luck to you. I hope my son will train soon too!

Potty Elmo is what we have. They barely gave it much attention. You may have better luck, it's worth the $8 or whatever it is, to try it.

We are showing our 18 month old son "Elmo Potty Time" He loves it becasue Elmo is in it, but seems to be more aware of "peepee" and "poopoo" and the potty itself. I hope that helps. C.
