my daughter 2y.9m. has been using potty & diaper free during the day for about 7 mns or more.
however at night she still needs a diaper. when and how can i start training her at night? do i wake her at night and not wear diaper? she always wakes up at night to drink, and in am always has a wet diaper.the other thing we co-sleep. i'm thinking of buying water proof overlay pads.

What can I do next?

I agree with the others - wait. Wait until she starts staying dry 2-3 nights a week and then make the transition. Hopefully that will happen around 3. If she's not staying dry at all yet, it may be too soon. If she's not staying dry at all by 3, try limiting her nighttime and evening liquids.

Good luck! She's already made great progress on the part she has "real" control over. The nighttime part will come with time now that her bladder is trained.

We wake up our son (he is 4) on our way to bed to use the potty one last time. Around midnight. Works great. He goes right back to bed no problem. If we let him go w/o waking him we only have 50/50 shot he will be dry in the morning.

My daughter also potty-trained at 2 years old. We were so thrilled not to have to deal with diapers all day! However, it is normal for kids to have nighttime wetness until 5 or 6 years old - their bodies are just not physically mature enough to control the bladder until then.

For us, we did not even mention trying to stay dry at night. We called the pullups "sleeping undies" and just kept using them until she REFUSED to wear them anymore. When that happened, we made a deal with her. If she could keep her sleeping undies dry for ONE WEEK (we made a sticker chart), then she could try sleeping in regular undies. It worked, but note that this was initiated by HER, not us. We then made sure her waterproof pads were in good condition and dealt with the occasional accident with as much gentleness and understanding as we could. We also "double make" the bed - waterproof pad, sheets, blanket, ANOTHER waterproof pad, sheets, blanket, and comforter. This way, in the middle of the night, we just remove the top layers, and pop her back in bed.

One thing I would say is, don't try to "train" her at night. She'll be dry when her body is ready. Pushing things along could cause setbacks in other areas of development. It's just not worth it. One thing you CAN do is limit the nightime fluids. At nearly 3, a sip of water at night is not necessary unless she's sick.

And another note - once she IS dry at night, then a nighttime accident is often an early symptom of a cold.

And, just in case you're interested, my daughter was day-time dry (no accidents at all) around 25 months and nighttime dry just before her 3rd birthday. And yes, she still does have accidents at 4 years old!

Good luck,
K.

My son was daytime potty trained at 2 1/2 years old. He wears pullups at night, still, and he's almost 4. We tried limiting drinks, waking him up at night, and getting him up early to keep him dry at night. I got frustrated at having to do laundry everyday, so I decided to go to pullups. From what I've read, and what others have said, it will happen when his body is ready to stay dry at night. Until then, I'll keep him in his "night time" underwear. It doesn't seem to bother him, only mom and dad:)

I am reading a book that says that you shouldn't worry about night time training until about 6 yrs old. She is still a little young for that. Your lucky she potty trained so young. I wouldn't even bother to start until she starts having more dry mornings.

Dear Y.,

I would not worry about her wearing a diaper at night her bladder is probably not developed enough to go all night yet. It really is so much to expect from them if their body is not ready and it is completely out of their control. As far as I am concerned you have potty trained her if she is going all day without a diaper and using the potty. Both of my kids wore a diaper for a while at night, and they were both daytime trained by 2 1/2 years old. My son took longer he had nightime accidents for a while after being trained during the day. It's really no big deal to put on a diaper at night, its better than changing sheets every night. I think it is quite an accomplishment that you had her trained before she was three so I wouldn't concern myself with nighttime. Good luck!!
