Potty Training - Anyone Want to Sew Me Some Half-diapers-half-underwear???

I don't know how to sew, but if i did I would make some hybrid underpants for my son. He will be 3 in April and we've been potty training. All is well in the front...he rarely has pee pee accidents and when he does its usually a drip which he stops, realizes what it means, and finishes up in the potty. But on the back end we're struggling. That's why I was thinking...a diaper in the back and underwear in the front!

The thing that I'm truly worried about, because I know it takes time and I know its common for poop to come later, is I'm afraid he's holding it and its leading to hardened poops. He hasn't always been the most regular, I occasionally have to throw some apples in the juicer to move things along although he is a great eater. But it seems to have gotten worse since we got rid of diapers while awake and I'm worried that he's going to cause himself more pain and struggle by hardening the poop by holding it. So does anyone have any advice on this? I have read that holding poop can mean that they're not ready, but I hate to go back to diapers and ruin the pee pee progress we've made! If he's ready for one and not the other, what do I do?

What can I do next?

That's what Pull-Ups are, half underwear/half diaper.

Pick the same time every day to sit on the potty. Read him a book while he's "waiting" for something to happen. Keep trying that. A good time would be about 15/20 min after a meal.

I used, the brand "Potty Scotty" underwear for my son... in the middle it has an absorbing section. Works REAL well.
Once my son even pee'd in it, forgetting... and this underwear sopped it all up.

Look on Amazon or E-bay for it.
REALLY good and worth it.

For his pooping, that happened to my daughter and we had to take her to a Pediatric Gastroenterologist... because she got bad constipation. Thus, hardened poop and ensuing pain.. thus the child withholding it more. And a vicious cycle of it occurs. Pooping, made her stressed and created anxiety.
The Doctor said, just LET her poop, in a diaper, for the time being... so that her body can normalize again. And until she is ready/able/at the stage... of pooping, on a toilet or potty.
It took THREE months, of prescriptions to stop her constipation.
Constipation, can lead to bulging bowels, internal hardening, Encopresis and a blocked up system. It not even being able to come out.

It will NOT ruin the pee progress. It did not at all, for my daughter.

We had a similar issue and realized that he would usually poop in the morning. So we put pull ups on him until he pooped in the morning and then put undies on him after that. Soon he didn't want to wear the pull ups any more and chose to do his business in the potty. It only took about 3 weeks to transition him over. So if you can figure out what his schedule is maybe this will work for you.

My son is 3 1/2 and doesn't wear diapers except at night and when he has to poop. He won't poop in the potty yet so I don't make a big deal about it. I just put him on a diaper and let him go and then take it off. I've told him that kids use the potty to poop by the time they turn 4. Hopefully, hearing this will prepare him for it in the next few months. If not, we'll deal with that when I feel he is completely ready. Good luck!

Potty training is a tough feat especially for boys. I had the same problem with my son, who is now three and a half. Definetly do not go back to diapers. My son wasn't afraid to poop but I noticed that when he did go he would look in the toilet and say, "Yucky poop, Mommy." Whenever my kiddo needed to poop, he would hide behind furniture and get really quiet. Whenever I could catch him I would sit him on the potty and tell him to fart. I know it sounds a little crazy but it worked! Simply because you are doing the same actions. After, there was a lot of congratulating. After a few time, it was no problem with him going to the potty to poop. My only problem now is he tells me that he has to fart before he goes everytime. One more thing to overcome but better than cleaning up the mess! It worked for us so thought I would share. Good luck!

Hi love-

What a great idea! I sew...I am past 'potty training' now...and my 'developmentally delayed daughter' gave me a REAL run...BUT, if you come up with a design...I will sew it!

*thinking a patent...'green' interest of late...*

You can get thick training pants online or in some stores. I've seen them in Target and Babies R Us in smaller sizes--up to 3T or 4T. Potty Scotty I think makes a bigger size if you order online. I had trouble with my son because he is big for his age and potty trained later (between 3.5 and 4). Our only choices were pull ups or regular underwear so he stayed in pull ups a long time (he was too big for the largest diapers). My son was not typical because he was trained with the poop before the pee.

My daughter is 25 months and not trained at all. But she has trouble with constipation and I give her stool softener daily to get her more regular. It is improving but it has taken a while and I won't start training her until it is better resolved.
