Potty Training & Problem Pooping

My 2.5 yr old son is in full-on potty training mode for a couple days now. We started out slow, waiting for his cues and interest to peak...fast forward to this past weekend, where we went all in.

So he has been in underwear for about 4 days now. He is doing GREAT! Only a few accidents and really catching on quick. Here's the problem: he's not pooping. It's been about 4-5 days now, although I can not remember exactly.

I'm assuming that the "stress" (and it's not really stressful, just a change) is throwing off his natural rhythm, but we are coming to the point where if he doesn't go in the next day or so, he's going to end up constipated with a huge tummy ache. :(

So what can I do to help bring on a BM naturally? He already drinks a lot of water (he's not a juice or milk drinker anyway). I really don't want to have to resort to OTC meds (like a childrens laxative), but I won't watch him suffer either.

What can I do? What foods/liquids can I push?

HELP! :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He pooped!!!! Lol. 5 days later, but disaster averted.

He was actually home from daycare today because of a fever, so I was watching his cues all day and noticed something "brewing". Without too much struggle, he managed to poop (and on the potty!). I'm just thankful this is behind us now. No pun intended.

Thanks for all the advice. I will be sure to remember this for the future.

Prunes or prune juice, pear juice, white grape...

Don't do a huge fiber push (grains, etc) because that can add too much bulk and worsen constipation. Fiber is good for prevention, not for treatment.

If nothing else, go get a bottle of Magnesium Sulfate. It costs about a dollar, and about half an ounce is enough to produce a movement in my almost 3 year old when she hasn't gone for a week. It doesn't appear to upset her tummy and really, it's just a mineral drink...however, it tastes like sweet tarts on crack so be prepared to try your best (and fail) to mask the taste.

I usually use a warm bath and somehow it just "slips" out. Let him play for a while and it should be good. Not the place you want him to poop, but hey, its better than being constipated.

Apples! When my girls get constipated, I always give them an apple and they usually go very shortly after. :)

My son potty trained at 2.5 as well. One Friday he asked for underwear, and by that Sunday he had no accidents and even used our church bathroom just fine. Never any daytime accidents at all after that weekend in fact.

BUT- we did put him in a pull-up at nap time and that is when he would poop. He would then tell us and we'd go to the potty and flush it down and clean him up. (I should mention that he quit napping at 2, and that nap time was really just play-quietly-in-your-room-and-give-mommy-a-break time by then.) It took about three weeks of being pee trained before he pooped on the potty.

That whole three weeks he really wanted to poop on the big potty. We had bribed him with a chocolate covered raisin, a real treat to him. And he wanted to use the special Cars potty wipes we got him. (Just plain flushable wet wipes that Huggies sells in a Cars container. We refilled it with regular adult flushable wipes after. Much quicker to use wet wipes than TP on the kiddo at first, which I think makes it less traumatic!)

Still, even though he really wanted to poop on the potty and talked about it, he'd get too excited/nervous when the time came. He was just more relaxed in the Pull-Up. He did fight me about putting it on too, because he only wanted to wear underwear, but I told him he'd wear them for sleeping like his big cousin does.

Anyway, it took a few more weeks till he was relaxed enough to do it on the real potty. Part of it might be that he had privacy in his room and not the bathroom. Even before potty training, he was always a kid to "sneak off" to his room or behind the couch and poop.

I don't know if you'll feel like giving him permission to go in a Pull-Up will undermine the potty training. You know your kiddo. But it didn't really cause a problem for mine. I would be concerned that his first poop in 5 days will be hard coming out and scare him from the potty. I also read that pears and raisins are good for pooping, and that too much cheese, dairy, and apples can add to constipation. Good luck!

Popcorn is the best cure for constipation, and drinking water. Otherwise, the 4 p's: peaches, pears, plums, prunes.

I had to give my daughter Miralax every day from about 2 yrs to 4 yrs as she had lts of constipation issues (as directed by doc). Still travel with it.

Be sure to avoid bananas.
