There is actually a good potty training book which you can find at any of the Rite Aid stores. I know that KMarts have the book too. It is located at the Book Department under the Reference side by the Pregnancy books/Health/Medical books.

Hi F.,
I successfully potty trained my little guy in 4 days. (well i did have support from our nanny/ husband!) I was told a lot of different things. I got a bit overwhelmed with all the books/ advise. I did however pick up a book that said how to know when a child is ready...
unfortunatly I don't remember the name of the book - but you know your babe is ready when
they show interest in the potty. We talked about it quite a bit and he was afraid to sit on the big potty - even with one of those rings you sit on top of the potty) so I knew a little potty would work - It was his own special potty. Since my hubby and I both work at home, we basically committed to not going anywhere with our son for 4 days. This allowed us to keep him naked a majority of the time and watch closely for all the signs. (the Dance - was a dead giveaway - to get to the potty fast) at first notice, we went in and sometimes it came out and sometimes it didn't. I had a stack of books in the bathroom and we read/ sang and talked about the potty. he had a few accidents, however during these 4 days - it simply took us being completely present for him. and all in fun, appraising him - awarding every time he successfully went in the potty. We used gummy worms - man, they worked - he could not wait to get his gummy worm - over time he forgot about the worm - One thing we learned very quickly was he got so disappointed with himself he had an accident - he really wanted to do it. I believe children get mixed up when parents are in a hurry to go here or go there - and throw a diaper on for convenience. If you want the shortest route, I say wait for the tell-tale signs that he is ready and then go cold turkey with all the love and gentleness you can muster! ;-)

Hi F.,
My sister used this method in her son who will be 3 this month. They went to the store and bought "big boy underwear" that he got to pick out himself. They put them on him when they got home and told him if he had an accident they had to throw them away just like a diaper. He wet his pants once, and never did it again because he wanted to keep his Thomas the Train undies. It worked for her and she got the idea from a friend at church who did it. Hope this helps. My mom also used "sink the cheerio" but that was sometime in the 80's. Haha. But hey, you never know it my work. ;o)

You should get (buy or rent) the Elmo's Potty Time DVD. It is great! My oldest son loved it and I am going to begin with my youngest tomorrow as a matter of fact. I just bought the DVD from Walmart today for $8.95. It is the cutest movie and all kids love Elmo! My oldest kept saying he wanted to go to the potty like Elmo when he was getting the hang of it. Good luck!

Dear F.,
Everyone has a different opinion on potty training. Here's mine... Don't!

Pushing a child (or even gently encouraging) to pee or poo in the potty before he is ready never works. I suggest you just put the potty (little toddler potty) in the bathroom and just let him come in with you and your husband when you go. Just ask him if he wants to go in his potty. If he says no then let it go. If he says yes, show him how and don't make a huge deal over it.

Someone once told me... "He won't go to kindergarten in diapers" It's true. He'll show you interest when he's ready. Pretty much anything before that will frustrate both of you.

Just my opinion!

Mother of 3 - 6 year old boy (potty trained :)), 2 year old girl (not ready yet), and 3 month old boy.

I picked up MOMMY RESCUE GUIDE TO POTTY TRAINING and I appreciate what I've read so far. I haven't used it extensively yet 'cause according to the developmental list in the book, my little one isn't quite ready to start. BUT still I think it'll be a great manual for me!

Hi F.,
We are potty training right now. I bought an online potty training guide that said a whole lot of nothing. It goes into the muscle control it takes to release urine and push a stool. I couldn't even finish reading it.

Basically, we sit on the potty every hour. The PED says if they can sit on the potty for 10 minutes they are ready. Mornings and right after nap are the best times, although she may go at other times. Right now she only potties, as most kids take longer to poo in the toilet. Sometimes she cries and I try to talk her into staying and just sit on the floor to and read and keep very busy. In the beginning she would start to go and I would just quickly put her on the toilet. Just like anything else, lots of work and practice.

Best of luck.

It takes a lot of patience, praise and persistance.
the 3 "p's" of potty training.
Two is a still a little young. All my son's, three, trained until they turned three.

Two is not too young. Our son asked at 20 months. Due to our school schedule (both teachers) I couldn't until he was 26 months. It took 4 days. I used "How to Toilet Train Your Child in Less Than a Day". We didn't completely use it, but we got some really great ideas from it. We plan to do it with our next. I have friends who swear by it as well. I saw a cute book in a book store the other day that included a doll that peed. It came with a boy doll for boys. I don't know how anatomically correct it was, but the book looked good. Potty training so young does mean that to an extent you're the one who's potty trained. For a long time, all our son did was tell us, and I had to do the rest. It was worth it, though, to be done with diapers. We started on a Saturday and Wednesday he was completely free of accidents, so you could do it with just a day or two off work if it goes smoothly. If he seems ready, go for it. Our son was the first in his class and that in itself seemed to be incentive for him. He was very proud of his "dunderwear". :) GL

My oldest son was 3 yrs. old before he was potty trained. One day his dad was headed down the hall and an idea struck....I told his dad to show him what to do...he never wore another diaper!! I really lucked out with that one. You might ask dad to assist on that one!
