My youngest son is 5 years old and he will be going into kindergarten in the fall this year. He goes the bathroom in the toilet but he refuses to wipe his own butt when he poos. anyone got any ideas on how I can get him to at least try to attempt it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, first i would like to thank everyone for the ideas. it is a work in progress. my son is very stubborn. i am using the Kandoos wipes and tryin the big boy tactic, the big school with your siblings tactic, the sit there until you wipe yourself tactic. i think my next tactic is getting his older brother to help me out. I got 6 months to get it done, wish me luck

You could try to make a game of it, say, see how few wet wipes you can use before the last one come out clean? I'm sure we will be going through the same thing with our son, who at 4 we still wipe. He's in preschool and luckily he's never pooped there, but he knows that when he does it's his responsibility. It's a double-edged sword for me, because while I want him to be independent and learn this skill, I know he has a hard time reaching and I actually like that I don't have to deal with skid marks or rashes.

My 5 yr old son has the same problem. I have found that any kind of wet wipes work, (charmin, kandoo etc..) for some reason either it gets it cleaner sooner, or it feels better to wipe with them. It also helps to have that talk about hygene and "smelling". good luck

try kandoo wipes or something similiar. some of the products have characters that might interest him. these are wet wipes that might be easy for him to clean himself with. you can also tell him the expectations of kindergartners to take care of their hygiene. if he is stinky other kids might be able to smell him and make fun of him. also, start some kind of reward chart everytime he attempts to do it. This has always motivated my kids.

I had that same trouble, the first thing I tried was rewards, and they had better be the big one, and I sat my son down and told him that he could not attend school if he wouldn't do his own "paper work". Kevin REALLY wanted to go to school and ride the big boy bus. It took several months, but he finally got it. This was the time that I stopped doing alot of "baby" stuff for him, Big Boys help themselves, and the family.

Hi - rewards worked for my kids.. My daughter likes treats. Like a candy bar or a bag of chips. After a couple days of less talking in school, she got a treat. Then we increased it to a week of less talking. This week the reward is after 2 weeks of reduced talking... Eventually it becomes natural to talk less... For my son, his motivator would be to watch a little more TV or play video games a little longer. Thanks

I live in Davenport also. I am a mother of three. I have a five and half year old also. She sometimes refuses to wipe as well. I always start with explaining why it is important for her to wipe herself because she is so big. I am sure that you have already done this. Sometimes that works. The not so desirable option is for you to refuse to wipe him, he will either A. end up wiping him self if you refuse or B. not wipe and figure out how gross it is and never not wipe again. Sometimes they just have to learn for themselves. Good luck.

good luck
my son is 5 in kidergarten and working on it!!
Keep baby wipes near the toilet !!

Find out what the issue is -- as to why your son won't wipe--
Then you can work on that/

Even though my son was potty trained at 15 months..
I still find myself helping him wipe his butt

I teach him and show him -- but he can not handle the thought of getting his hands dirty --- or leave anything behind to appear in his underwear freaks him out -- so he will use the baby wipes --
he is in kindergarten and chooses to use the bathroom for poo at home....
If I am not around he figures it out --- and takes care of it

my 4 yr old just likes mom or dad to do it for her when she's home, and we don't mind. But when she is at School...she does it. She has no choice and the teacher won't do it for her. Perhaps your son will have to learn the though way, even if it means getting some monkey-butt rashes to learn to whipe clean.
