My son is almost 32 months old and today is the first day that he went to daycare with big boy underwear on! I really don't want to go the pull-ups route. I just want him to wear underwear during the day and a diaper at night! I also bought him a potty, but he seems to be doing better on the toilet. Any advice? Wish me luck! We'll see how many pants he messes up today!

What can I do next?

To tell you the truth, I have no idea what i did right. We tried everything with my son and he just seem not to get it. I started to accept the fact that boys usually take longer then girls. He turned three and a few months later he didn't want to wear a diaper or pull up anymore. He didn't pee in his bed and he went to the potty on his own, the big potty not the training one.

But we tired videos, peeing on things in the potty (target practice), treats, you name it, we tried it and it just seem to all fail.

If I have any advice to give you it's keep trying, don't give up and do your best to be supportive. The worse thing you could do when potty training is yelling at a kid for having an accident. So far it sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck!

Buy lots of laundry soap! No, really, I did straight to underwear with one boy and pull-ups with another (because of day care requirements). The straight-to-undies worked better and faster. It also worked faster to stick with underwear at night, too, but I used those waterproof pads under sheets. Also, no drinks 3 hours before bed. Also, it helped to get the superhero underwear, because you don't want to have an accident on superman (or batman)!

Hello J.,
I can say Pull-ups are not a bad thing. They are wonders at night and better than diapers cuz they act more like big boy underwear rather than baby diapers. My son was 5 before we got him out of pull-ups at night. Even with nothing to drink 4 hours before bedtime. Boys tend to be harder but try not to over push him. Only time will get him into big boy undies all day and night. Check this site out it is called www.peterpotty.com. My son loved the big boy urinal and it is portable also. So, if need be you can bring it to daycare with him. I hope this helped and good luck:-)

My son prefers the toilet to the potty chair also...He said it all the other day when I put a Pull-Up on him and told him "No pee-pee underwear"...He exclaimed "No! Not underwear...It's a diaper!"...That's exactly what Pull-Ups are...overpriced diapers!...I started him naked potty training...When he got the hang of that, I moved him up to running around the house in underwear....After a few days of "leaking" in the undies, and then finally keeping them dry because I kept repeating to him "No pee pee underwear" when we put them on him, I put cotton, elastic waistband shorts on him. For the most part he's doing just fine during the day, but I have no idea how to deal with the night time problem!

All I know is that my son is about the same age and we are still working on it. I don't have much advice, but from what I've read and what we are going through at my house, you are not alone. I feel worse for people who have a girl then a boy. That's when you really think something is wrong with the boy! LOL! But really, all they need for this is a cheering section and parents that will give them as much opportunity to succeed and no shame for having an accident. AND (big one) don't let anyone make you feel bad if he is 3, 4 or even 5 before he get it all the way (especially w/ bed wetting). He may just be physically incapable of holding it right now. Our pediatrician (who was my husband's doctor as a kid and a family friend) told us that parents can control many things, except when it comes to eating and using the potty. We can't force a child to eat just like we can't force them to make it to the potty. Hope that give you just a little peace of mind (unless like me, it's just about gone). :ob We can only do our best. Good Luck & God Bless!! -J.
