I am having a lot of trouble trying to potty train my two and a half year old son. It seems that I have tried everything, and nothing is working. I know people say that "he will do it when he is ready". I have read everything there is to read about "potty training", and I really need some advice! Thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi K., my name is Karry and I understand what you are going through. Really...I have 3 boys! First when I started...I would set some skittles, tic-tacs, m&m's, whatever candy they loved and I would put it on the back of the toilet and tell them, "wanna tinkle for a tic-tac? Lol I know that sounds silly but it seemed to motivate them to go. Also, if there is a man in his life that you feel safe with him around...you send them to the bathroom together and when he watches a big boy go pee pee...well he kinda wants to be like a big boy. LOLOL Sorry it's corny, that is just what I did.

Good luck to you!
Karry

Hi Kristen,

You know I don't know where all the rush has come from over the years. It seems like everyone is in a big rush to either get their kids potty trained, into preschool and being a scholar at 3.
I have a 16 yr old and when he was this age parents didn't even think about start to potty train until 3. My personal opinion, when you wait till this age they have better communication skills, are more in touch with what is going on with their bodies and have more maturity for their age. When they are 2 they are still in between the stages of being a "baby" and becoming a toddler.

My advice give it a rest for awhile, awhile being 6 months. Let him turn 3, it is sooo much easier. You know slow and steady wins the race. There should be no rush in these things and no stress about it.

Hey K., I'm a 39 year old mom with 4 year old twin girls and a 17 year old son and a 20 year old daughter.
From what I can see boys do tend to take longer than girls and lots of incentives do help. Mmm's are a good incentive for number 2 and Cheerio's used as boat that can be sunk by a urinating waterfall is always fun! Boys have a tendency to turn everything into a battle or a game so make it one. If for some reason this doesn't work, that does not mean you have failed. It just means your child, like all children is unique and different and patience will find him potty trained. Hang in there!

I have two daughters and I had the same struggle with both of them. But, when they decided they were ready they just did it!!! It was like one day it just clicked. I would put him in undies for a day with pants on over them. If he pees, change both and tell him where the pee is supposed to go. If he's ready to be potty trained, then when he starts to pee in his pants he'll stop and run to the potty. If by the end of the day, he is still peeing completely all over himself then I'd wait and try again later. He's only 2 1/2 so don't stress out about it. Good luck.

Have you tried giving him something to aim at? Or even a sticker board that rewards him, everytime he uses the potty like hes supposed to, he gets to put a new sticker up & after he gets a certain number of them reward him with.... say a trip to the zoo, picking out an inexpensive toy??? BUT, every child is different, I was just lucky, mine didn't like being wet. That could also be the problem, he can't feel when hes wet?

Kristen,

I too tried everything and finally bought the book online "Potty trained in three days" and it worked. I can save you the $25 and just tell you what it said. Stay home for three days. Take your child every 30 min to the potty and let them sit until they are ready to get up.I know that sounds crazy but it works. Do not make them sit until they go.Try reading a book to keep them there. When they finally do go reward them with something they love. Keep them in under wear. Do not use pull ups. If they go in there underwear say " yuck we don't like to be wet, next time we will go in the potty", then have them sit on the potty. Show them that you are throwing away the diapers and never put one back on them. You will go through a lot of underwear the first day but it does work. In four days my three yr. old was going on his own. Going number two took about two weeks. Also do not ask them if they need to go. Just take them and say we are going to go potty. If they do not go, praise them for trying. If you stick with this it will work. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Tis true Boys will do it when they are ready. Boys seem to be harder to train than girls and it does take alot longer some take till they are almost 5 beleive it or not. I trained my boys by getting a squirt bottle and pretended to be a boy and showed them how everytime I took them to the potty I would put something small and light weight like a very small cut out of a boat or something and would tell them to try and make it sink and when they did I would praise them by acting very silly like cheering and clapping and danceing I wound act very very excited and I would give them a treat right after they washed thier hands like maybe some M&M's. to teach them to do # 2 I would set them on the little potty and I would set on the big potty beside them and make all kinds of noises and faces like I was going potty also. When I started doing these things they thought going potty was fun and I got them trained in no time.
