Potty Training - Macomb,IL

My daughter is 2 1/2 and we have been working on potty training. We started several months back, but some days it really feels useless. Sometimes she is great and uses the toilet to pee all day. However, other days she wants to wear a diaper and never says anything about having to go to the bathroom. We have been giving her a piece of candy every time she uses the toilet. But I am looking for other good ideas to help her be motivated and use the bathroom more often. ~Thanks~

What can I do next?

She can't wear diapers if you don't buy any :)
Don't use Pull ups either! They are just diapers and a 2 1/2 year old can't differentiate between them.

I would suggest that you maybe switch to only diapers at night (and not for very long) - but on the other hand she kind of needs to do it on her own time too (I know I know, we hear it 100 times). My daughter just turned three and is starting preschool in the fall so that was a BIG motivator for her. But the biggest thing that worked for me (and a friend who is potty training her son) is to just say no to the diaper. If they're wearing it they're going to pee in it. I would bet money that if I put a diaper on my daughter tomorrow she'd just pee in it all day. Some kids are just not grossed out by it I guess. It took her a long time to realize something was wrong when her panties were wet and I did A LOT of laundry. Oh and with my older daughter I used a sticker chart I made on a piece of poster board, and a mom a knew let her daughter stick a sticker on her potty chair every time she went. Stick to your guns mama, you can do it! It's just a few short months. Or even shorter.

What I did with both of my daughters was take them shopping and let them pick out their own little panties. They couldn't wait to wear them but I would tell them they can't wear them unless they use the potty. It worked really well since they loved what they picked and knew that if they went potty in them, they got taken away. Good luck!

Sounds like your daughter is almost ready but not quite ready to be completely potty trained. Some kids are ready all at once and others take longer but all get there.

I have found that training pants work better than pull-ups although the pullups are more convenient they are diaper like and the kids know it is ok if they have an accident when whering one (even if you didn't say that).

Keep at it and it will come.

My kids never responded to treats for very long. I just had to put them in underwear and when they had an accident I would tell them "no, that goes on the potty." Then they sat on the potty while I cleaned it up. One kid did really well when we made a big deal out of him going, and one did better when we didn't do any "good jobs." I HATE potty training and am willing to pay for someone to train the 3rd and the 4th (he isn't even here yet). My mom told me that I'd get through it and say "how'd I do that?" She was right!

I think my daughter is trained, we have gone shopping 2 x with panties. :0) She is also 2 1/2. She was really excited at first too, then decided the diaper were easier. So went to a sticker reward system. My 8 yo made a poster that looked like a road. Every 10 stickers she would get a little presents. The end of the long it said POTTY TRAINED big present. We hang it on the back of the bathroom door. She started to get it after she got to pick out a little thing. We talked about what she wanted for the big present often. We used diapers going shopping, naps, and bed time.

I have trained 3 and my best suggestion is to use underwear during the day and put her on the potty once every hour. Don't use pull ups except at naps or night - tell her they are her sleeping panties. At first you probably will have a lot of accidents, but she will get the idea VERY quickly.

Good luck!

I would suggest using a doll baby and having her train her doll baby to go to the potty. This will encourage her to use the potty and will make it fun at the same time. A potty chart is a great idea too, kids love stickers!! Good luck, I am in the potty training phase right now with my son and his interest fluctuates too. I know that if I push too h*** o* him he will back away from the idea. Hope this helps!!
