My daughter is 20 months old and I know it is a bit early to potty train. However, I am not sure when. She brings me a diaper to change her, and she points to her diaper right before she poops, or right after she poops. But, I am not sure if I should get a potty and sit her there, or wait. She likes the bathroom, is not scared. She goes in with me and is not scared of the toliet flushing, anything like that. Any thoughts and suggestions. A.

Alsion-
girls train sooner than boys and my daughter started training about the same time. she may be too young to go the whole distance and maybe you need to use a diaper at naps and at night, but get her a potty chair and see what she does.

Alison,
Never to early to start potty training. My first daughter started going on the potty at 12 mths, then again 16 mths, then on and off at 18 mths. Finally went on a family trip at age 2 and she went to the bathroom with a younger family member and that was the end of diapers. My second child was faster she started around 13 mths and did great. My third child was on and off like first child. They are all different. But if not scared then I'd give it a shot. I never liked those potty chairs. I just got the seat that goes on the toilet. I did try potty chairs but kids didn't take it seriously. Thought it was a toy. Hope all goes well.

Alison,
I think it wouldnt hurt to try it out. SHe is showing all the signs that she may be ready for the potty. My daughter did the same thing and she got it down in a week. She is still in diapers at night, but she stays dry through naps so we are working our way to over night. I suggest you get the potty that also turns into a step stool with attach on toilet seat. My daughter didnt like the actual poty and liked to sit on the toilet. I also did not use pull ups. I think they just defeat the purpose and are pampers that rip off. Try sitting her on the potty for a little while throughout the day and see if she does anything. Try it for a few days. Good Luck!

My daughter is almost 22 mos and we have been "potty training" her for about a month. We are not forceful. If she tells us we sit her down, or when we change her diaper we sit her down. But we are not doing it every hour. Only when she's already naked or she tells us. When your daughter points to her diaper take it off and sit her on the potty. I wouldn't actively potty train her yet. But there is no reason that if she is telling you that you can't try. We have books by the potty and we sing songs. Sometimes she sits for several minutes before she says she's done. But at almost 22 mos she has peed and pooped on the potty.

she sounds like she telling you that she wants to be clean and dry. I'd go with it. Definetly offer her the potty and such.

Give it a try. You will need to get a little potty at some point, so you may want to take her with you and pick-out a potty and big girl undies. It sounds like she's ready to start potty-training. They say anytime around age 2, but that the child will let you know. Sounds like she's saying she's ready.

Good for you!

Why do you think she is too young? She sounds more than ready and if you ignore it, you might lose her eagerness and have problems later. Get the potty and encourage her.
Good luck

Go for it! We started introducing my daughter to the potty around 18m (after i saw her crouching in the corner and asked what she was doing and she responded "poo-poo"). By 24m she was going #2 on the potty all the time. By 2.5 she was fully trained. I know that seems like a long time but we took a very relaxed, no pressure approach. When she wanted to use the potty she did. When she didn't that was ok too. At about 22 months we switched her to pullups so she could get them up and down when she needed to go. I never understood the "anti-pullup movement". They're great. And what a wonderful surprise it was the first time she called me and I went dashing to her only to find she was already sitting on the potty going by herself! By the time she was about 26/27 months we started putting some gentle pressure on - aka "you can do this, I know you can!" - and putting her in panties more often. Buying pretty ones really seemed to help. But we knew she was ready since she had been going #2 for a few months consistently. Plus it was the beginning of summer so it was warm enough for her to run around 1/2 naked and it was easier to air out the house if she had accidents. She had a few but all kids do.

Have fun and relax. But don't hold off. Now is a great time to start. Read books about it. Talk about all the different steps, including flushing (let her flush for you at home so she gets used to the sound) and washing hands. Etc, etc. She'll have it down before you know it! Good luck!

Get her a little potty, put it next to yours so she can sit with you in bathroom. When she has to poop, either hold her above your toilet or sit her on hers each time. Then show her a sequence...pee/poo flush, wash...

Potty power is a good dvd.

Its not too early. Many kids can do it early but if parents wait they lose that window of kid's interest and it returns a year later!

My kid was ready much younger but I was pregnant...etc ans trained her when I was ready rathern than when she was. Listen to her cues and praise her when she does it right (a song rathern than gifts)!!

20 months is not early at all. we started by daughter when she was 5 months old, just holding her over the sink or toilet to pee and poop so she gets used to doing it outside her diaper. then when she was able to sit, she started on her potty.
She is now 14 months and trained pretty well. she rarely poops in her diaper (only when we are out of the house for a very long time and there is no convenient place to go). i still have to ask her if she needs to go, but she will let me know if she does or not. she goes pretty much right away as soon as she is on the potty, and sometimes she will sit there for a while until the poop comes.
So, definitely get your daughter a potty, i'm sure she'll pick it up real fast and it will make your life easier with not having to deal with poopy diapers.
good luck.

Perfect time to start. Buy a potty seat, the type that converts from the floor to the toilet. She telling you she is ready. Don't use food as a reward, use stickers.

I totaly agree with the other posts. She is not too young. We started our daughter at about 18 months. While she is't "trained" yet, she is starting to let us know when she needs to go and is getting more consistant about it and actually staying dry at times. My only suggestion is to just skip the potty. They are a pain to clean and some kids then won't use a regular toilet when out in pulbic. If she's not afraid of the toilet, get a seat for it and let her try that. If that starts to make her upset or she starts to refuse it, then try the little potty.

Go for it. My kids both wanted to be changed right away at 16 months old.. one boy and one girl... so I started putting them on like in the morning - just a few minutes, then early afternoon, late afternoon and evening.. and guess what - it worked. both were trained at age 2 during the day.. night time takes a lot longer. Just do it consistently everyday.. and it might work. They are never to young to learn things. My kids did great with training. A. H.~~

HI Alison
It is my opinion that you potty train when your child is showing an interest. I think she is.
All of my 4 children were trained by the time they were 27 mos. The oldest trained at 19, so don't think it is too soon. He was a talker:said"yucky mommy" pulling at his diapers. I said "if you don't want yucky diapers, this is the job" Showed him and put him in big boy pants. Never another problem. I am not a person who advocates sit til you go. I did run the water sometimes and especially if they were dry they relaxed enough to go. I don't like the bathroom comfort well enough to read to them there. I did ask them if they wanted a book to look at, mostly again because they forgot what they were doing, and did it.
My cute story: I have twin girls. One trained quite easily about their 2nd birthday. I had said something about putting on big girl pants. Well, a while later she, in her big girl pants, said to her twin sister. "you a baby, now."
I bought pull ups, called them big girl pants and it was not long til she wanted to use the potty too.
Go For It -- won't hurt and may save on diapers.
God bless you and your efforts.

Hi Alison,

I think you should go for it. Introduce her to the potty, she will definitely let you know if she is ready. There is no harm in trying. I am going through this with my son. He showed interest in the potty really early and was peeing in the potty for a while, then all of the sudden completely stopped. Now at 26 months he is still wearing a pull up, but not really peeing in it, he tells me "I'm making peepee mom,"and I run to take him to the potty. This is his way of just telling me he has to go. I started using stickers and tattoos as tokens for going to the potty(he does not eat candy and this was a great substitute). He has done #2 in the potty, but only at the sitters. Just make a game out of it and she will follow.

Good luck...
