Potty-training Pants

My youngest son (age 3 ) is working on potty-training. Strangely - he was about 90% there 3 months ago...but recently started going in his pants rather than the potty. He knows "how" to do it...just seems to be a little lazy at this point. So - that is obviously frustrating - but my husband and I are trying to stay positive (not always easy) so he can get back on track. If anyone has thoughts - feel free to pass it along. Already using the rewards chart to encourage my son (even offering M&Ms after a successful attempt).
Second - I have the gerber training pants (along with several regular superhero underwear). I am prefering the padded versions right now since my son is not being consistent throughout the day. Does anyone have experience with the "potty Scotty" training pants...and are they that much better than the gerber version?

Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hey ladies - thanks to all of you who responded. I am 100% for the cold turkey method (what I did 4 months ago) - it was only recently that my son started sliding back into his old habits. So - good news. Bribery works (at least this time it did - lol). Two days ago I started giving my son an M&M after everytime he successfully used the potty (3 M&Ms for a poo - lol). It WORKED!!! No accidents in 2 days (knock on wood). He is wearing normal underwear - so I am hoping we don't slide back into bad habits. I guess I can always buy more M&Ms : )

Thanks again for the advice!!

my almost 4 yr old has been potty trained for well over a yr now, but we still have to remind him to go. When he is busy doing something else he will be holding himself and we have to tell him to go now!

One of the things that helped my son conquer that last bit of training was fairly simple, though a bit involved at the start. I found out what he was really fascinated with (cowboy boots), then I made a boot puzzle. We drew the shape (or you could google a picture), traced it on a plain sheet of paper, cut out the puzzle pieces- as many as you think he can handle- and traced those so he would know where each piece fit into the puzzle. We posted the paper in the bathroom and whenever he went #2 (or whatever your goal is) he got to glue one piece on the puzzle paper. When the puzzle was finished we bought a real pair of boots to celebrate- it gave him a goal to work towards and took enough time to complete that he had the pottying mastered. Good luck!

Hi - I have two sons as well and my 3 year old had the exact same issue. He was completely potty trained and then all of a sudden he stared going in his pants, some times more then once a day and I was very frustrated to say the least so I took him to the doctors b/c I thought maybe he had something more going on like a UTI. Then my husband started doing research on the internet to see if this happens to a lot of kids, turns out it does and it is not b/c they are lazy, most explainations are developmental. Turns out my son did not have a UTI or any other infection going on he was fine. What I started to do was remind him to go and if he told me he did not want to I would tell him he would not get to watch his favorite TV show or take something away that he liked. After about 2 weeks he was back to normal and going on the potty, even standing up like a big boy. Good luck and sorry I do not know anything about "potty Scotty."

I just skimmed your question and replys so if i missed it i'm sorry.
I think walmart or kmart sells the plastic training pants. those prevent the pee from leaking out but the child still feels the wetness. I don't know about scotty potty ones. but Plastic Pants work!!

I have potty trained 3 out of 4 kids using the cold turkey method. I was actually just discussing this the other day with my sister-in-law. Pull-Ups set kids back. It is very easy for them to go back to going in thier pants that way. The padding actually is what makes it worse. I had to get a little tough with my kids. I used the completely bare bottome method. All 3 of my kids were completely potty trained in less than a week this way. I only used Pull-Ups on the 3rd at night for a couple of months. He just wasn't completely ready for that yet.
If you know your son can do it, than I would HIGHLY recommend this method. Sometimes letting them do it at thier own pace will just never work.
I know people that have tried letting thier kids do it at thier pace. It just didn't go very well, 3 of them weren't completely daytime trained until over 4.
Good Luck!

May I suggest you go cold turkey on the training pants/diapers? It is too easy to slip into old habits when you have that back up. I would continue to praise him and tell him that you know he is able to keep his underwear dry and then just do it. Even if he has a few accidents you will still be further ahead and faster.

Hi K.! LOL boy does that bring back some memories. When my middle one was 3 we went through the same thing. Frankly she was just "too busy" to go to the potty. She just couldn't be bothered to stop playing, watching TV, whatever to go...yeah she is still stubborn at age 15! I realize you want to stay positive, but this is really a control issue. He knows the how, the why and the when...now it's time for you to put down your foot and quit playing games with it. I finally lost my patience with my daughter and told her "that's it" after one too many poopy pull-ups...I put her in panties the next day, told her she had to use the potty peroid! And that was the end of that...no accidents, no wetting the bed (I will confess to using pull-ups at night for about a month). So maybe you should just "get tough"! Best wishes.

Hi K.,
I yeah the ' COLD TURKEY" vote ... why make him more mixed up ?
if you are sah mommy, it is spring/ summer ...
simply leave just underware on him ...no shorts , soxs etc ... it works.
however; if you are a working mom and son in day care than [ a rule] you must provide clean scotty pants and change of cloths, shoes, sox ..
ps= leave potty chair near his play area !
a grammy

Never tried the "potty scotty" ones, but I loved the gerber padded pants. My son wore them even after he was trained b/c they fit him so nicely....I don;t think there's any harm in continuing to use training pants--sometimes they dribble a little and they are more absorbent but they can still feel the dampness. Good luck!
