whatever potty chair you get, my only advice is to skip the pee guard. I've two boys and I've found those things to be a pill to deal with. And as they grow up they then get in the way. They have been a bigger hassle then a help. Its not real difficult to teach them to point down.

I second one that goes over the regular toilet! They usually come with handles, so they feel secure and they love to get a step stool and climb up!

I've worked with toddlers for YEARS when I was a Nanny, I'm a parent coach now. I HATE potty chairs with the bucket. I won't use them. They're dirty and hard to clean. I always recommend a padded potty seat which fits onto a normal toilet and prevents the child from falling in. I recommend this not only because it's easier on me, but it also reinforces the idea that the bathroom is for potty time.

FYI- 19 month old boys often do not have the muscle control to be completely potty trained. If it works, GREAT! If not, it may just be a little too soon.

I potty trained twins at the same time and a seat on the big toilet was out of the question. I used the Baby Bjorn potty chairs. When they are younger the big toilet can be super intimidating. There was no way (even if it had just been one of them) they were going to get on the big toilet when they were learning. Plus at 19 months old he wouldn't be able to climb up on that big toilet without help. You want to give him his independence so I'd suggest a potty chair on the floor. The Baby Bjorn model is far better than any others because it's molded to for a comfortable "sit" and the hole/opening is plenty big to catch everything without a chance of spilling. And the guard is great in the front for boys.
My twins are 3 and I still have their little chair on the floor of each bathroom for the times when they really have to go and can't climb up onto the big toilet in time and for when they are waking up in the night, it's much easier to go on the little one when you're half asleep.
Baby Bjorn also makes a travel size potty chair that can go right in your car. This probably isn't a big deal now, but you'll want one when you go full force with potty training. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Don't get a chair. You have to clean them and they get messy and nasty. Get the padded seat that sits on the big potty, and a stool for when he's old enough to go alone. That way he won't ever have issues with it. You'll have to take him at this age anyway, so it's no big deal. My daughter was in panties by 19 months, but I had to remind her and take her.

Be sure to get one with the little splash guard. They are a must for little boys, but little girls can be helped by them too!

Let him put the seat on the potty, you help him up, and let him flush. That's so much fun at that age!

We use the Baby Bjorn seat that goes directly over the toilet. Good design, easy to clean, no dumping required.

There are cute little potties that are more geared toward boys, like one that looks like a train that plays music and has a place for toilet paper.....
I would go with something like that. It may help him to orient to the world of using the potty better.

Neither one of my grandchildren would use a potty chair. They wanted to be like Mama. They used a padded child size seat that fits over the toilet.

I've also heard of sitting the child on the toilet without the extra seat. Place them facing the tank which prevents them from falling in. You can place toys on the top of the tank to keep their attention.

I prefer the seats on the toilets, but sometimes the only way to get a child to use a potty vs a diaper is to use a chair. My favorites are molded single pieces of plastic as they are easier to clean.

These are my two favorites (1 chair and 1 seat) out of dozens we tested before settling on what to carry in the store. (Child tested and approved too!)
