Potty Accidents at Daycare???

My son has been in underwear for 3-4 weeks now (2.5 yr old). He does great and has maybe a small pee-pee accident every other day...he does fantastic at home, in public, and even on vacation. However, he had his first day of daycare and he supposedly had a great time even though he was crying in his sleep when I came to pick him up and most concerning was that he had a lot of accidents in his pants (from 9am to 2pm)...he even pooped in his pants!, which is a first. And even more disturbing was that the teacher said that she found him with poo on his hand!?!?

If anyone has any suggestions as to what might be going on here or what I can do to help him, please let me know.

What can I do next?

I used to teach at a daycare, and this is very common. Some kids really do get so wrapped up in what they're doing, that they don't think to stop and go to the restroom. It could also be that since he's new, he doesn't feel comfortable enough to tell someone he doesn't know that he needs to go. They should have regular potty times, but that may be up to 2 hours apart (should not be more than this). Talk to the teachers about asking him more often, at least until he's more comfortable.

I don't have experience with this, but I've heard from friends that they forget and/or are too interested in what they're doing to stop & go or pay attention to their bodies. Maybe that's what happened - new people, new toys, etc. I agree w/the first poster about the ratio re. the poopy hands though - yuck! But kids probably think that's interesting too! (LOL).

He is still so young-- My son was not fully potty trained until 3.5. Try pull-ups/easy-ups at daycare if needed... and also checking with the daycare about reminding him more often to go....
just a thought...How many care-providers "teachers" are there in 1 room-- doesn't seem like enough if he can dirty his hands too?!?!?!
