Postpartum Bleeding (C-section)

I delivered my son via c-section 4 weeks ago today :) I am a little concerned because I am still bleeding. It started off very heavy right after delivery which I expected and has continued daily the amount of a regular period. It is still bright red, no significant clots, but I would think it should be tapering off by now. I am exclusively breast feeding and have not missed any days with out bleeding so I doubt it's my period. Normal?

What can I do next?

Check with your Doctor.
I had a c-section with both my kids, and I never bled like that at all.

My bleeding after c-section lasted almost 6 weeks, bright red. However it was pretty light after the first 2 weeks. I wasl also breast-feeding.
I think if yours is still pretty heavy and/or if there is an odor, let your doctor know.

I bled for 6-8 weeks. I hated it, because it made me feel like I was still "an invalid." The OB finally did an ultrasound and it did appear that there was still some tissue left behind. To 'cure' it, she put me on a low dose birth control pill and it seemed to resolve after a couple of cycles, when I went off again. Some may fear that BC pills affect milk supply, but I had so much this would have been a relief. I didn't really notice a difference, however.

I believe I was still bleeding at my 6 week follow-up appointment. Still, if you're feeling worried, call your doctor. Funny thing, I (very foolishly) thought that because I was having a c-section, I wouldn't have anything going on "down there." I guess I just didn't think it through well, but I thought it would be all neat and tidy since the baby didn't come out there. Silly me! :)

I'm thinking the bright red should have turned a darker red or brownish color by now... but still be a lot of discharge. You can always call and ask your OB.

I hope breastfeeding is going well - if you have an concerns or questions, feel free to PM me.

Definitely in the range of normal. I bled 5 weeks, had a two week break, and then had a period! Then I kept having regular periods every month thereafter. And I also exclusively breastfed.

My midwife did tell me that after things tapered off, if I notice a resurgence in blood, to take it as a sign that I need to take it easier--not try to do so much. While this isn't always possible, I really agree with her and think that new moms should view their bleeding as a sign that they are still healing and should use it as a cue to modify their behavior and ask for more help (if possible!).

Its normal. I bled for about 8 weeks. You should probably check with your ob just to make sure everything is ok

Mine lasted almost 10 weeks with my first child. Nothing was wrong just normal for me. Even if you delivered vaginally normal is 6-8 weeks. But if you are concerned you should check with your doctor.

I bleed for 4-6 weeks after having a baby, c-section or not. Actually my c-section was lighter bleeding than my vaginal births were. The length of time sounds totally normal to me. The bright red color...I honestly can't remember. You might want to call and check, but I'm *guessing* it's still normal. There's never any harm in asking your dr.

"normal" is always a bell curve. I exclusively breast feed and delivered by C-section. The post partum bleeding lasted 4-5 weeks, every time I thought it was tapering off it would pick back up again, then a week and a half after it finally stopped I had my period back-- worse than ever! ARGH!
