Post Partum PUPPS Rash

I had horrible post partum PUPPS with my 1st pregnancy in 2007. They developed about 5 days post partum. It took 3 rounds of steriods to get rid of them. I now have a 5 month old son (2nd pregnancy) and I seem to be getting the PUPPS again now. My entire mid-section is covered in the same looking and extremly itchy rash. My question is can PUPPS develop 5 months after I gave birth?

What can I do next?

PUPPs usually doesn't develop post-partum - it's normally during pregnancy. Once you have it, you are FAR more likely to get it during future pregnancies. You can take steriods (a very mild dose) daily to get rid of the symptoms while pregnant. PUPPs won't actually go away until you give birth, but the symptoms (insanely itchy red raised rash) will subside.

Did your dermotologist actually do a skin biopsy to study the rash the first time to determine it was actually PUPPs. Most docs do not do this and just guess. There are MANY 'pregnancy rashes' that look just like PUPPPs but are NOT PUPPs. I'm thinking this may be the case because the odds of developing PUPPs after giving birth are extremely low.

You should definitely call a dermatologist since 5 months seems like a long time.

If it is is PUPPS, my sister developed it postpartum also (within a few days though). It took a while to get it diagnosed since she had no clue what was going on and the hospital told her it was an allergic reaction to latex. So hers was pretty advanced before she got any help. The only thing that helped her was using Sarna Sensitive Lotion. She got it from Walgreens or CVS. For some reason it had to be the Sensitive formula. Good luck, hope you get some relief soon.

It may be tinea versicolor; I developed this at about 5 mos postpartum. A topical anti-fungal cleared it up. My PCP took care of it. Hope it gets better soon-I know...it's awful! Hang in there...
