I had a c-section around 3 months ago and sometimes I get somewhat painful "twinges" in my lower abdomen...is this common?

What can I do next?

I had my c-section 6 months ago and all I have felt is some itching around the scar. It sounds like it is pretty normal from what everyone else is saying. I do have a friend who is experiencing a similar thing, and she just went to the dr this week.

I had that with mine too. My doctor told me that it is normal. Though he didn't explain much about it, I assume it is probably from the scar tissue and such that has built up. I also had (and still have) some numbness right above the incision, which my doctor told me was because of the length of the incision (my daughter was a pretty big baby and in a wierd position, so he had to make the incision a little longer than normal) You may have had the same thing. Hope that helps! =)

I've had two c-sections and with both of them I had what sounds like the same type of "twinges" for about the first 4 or 5 months. I didn't find them extremely painful or bothersome, so I never asked my doctor about it. I figured it was just my body recovering from surgery. They went away and I haven't had any problems since. If they start to bother you I would ask a doctor about them.

HI Melissa,

I had 2 c-sections and yes I remember the "painful twinges" I can not remember how long they last (sorry) but they do go away.

Hi Melissa,
I have had 2 c-sections. With both of them I had those little twinges. Mine weren't two painful but I did have them. They didn't last very long. Congrats on your new little one.

I had the same problem. I was told it is because your nerve endings are starting to grow back. I still don't have all the feeling back in that area and I had mine 5 1/2 years ago.

Melissa -

I had the same thing (it felt like I was healing all over again), but mine started much later (~7-9 months) and I was told that it was. I was told that it was the scar tissue moving. It went away after a while, and then I got pregnant with my 2nd (due in November) and while I haven't had near as much ligament pain with this one, I have had quite a bit of this 'twinging', especially during the first couple of months.

If it is too painful or lasts for too long, I would be sure to ask your Dr., though - just to be sure.

Sorry bout the c-section. they can really suck.

The twinges you are feeling are pretty normal. Lots of stuff happens during a c-section. 7layers of tissure are cut through which can cause varying levels of scaring. the twinges could be micro adhesions (bands of scar tissue) breaking up. Nerves are also moved around so you could be feeling some that are misfiring or trying to make new connections.

Generally it takes 6-8 months for someone to feel completely "normal" again after major surgery.

Hi Melissa-

This is my first time on Mamasource and I am still figuring everything out. I saw your question and wanted to respond.

Yes, it is totally normal to feel twinges of pain in your abdomen 3 months after a c-section. I held my belly on my inscision area whenever went from sitting to standing for at least 9 months after my c-section. I would say that it took until 15 months or so to feel like nothing ever happened in that part of my abdomen. For a long time it felt like maybe I'd done a few too many sit ups. I am now 21 months out and I can honestly say I feel 100% normal although I am still protective of that area, and sometimes shy away from sit ups and pilates. I know, I just need to get over it!

Hi Melissa~
I had the same thing. Although, I healed very well, I can still feel a little stinging/pulling/burning now and then. The next pregnancy I also had some pretty painful burning now and then as the scar tissue stretched, but it only lasted a few minutes at a time. Of course, if you are experiencing abdominal pain that is not superficial or incision related, or if you feel flu-like or have redness or heat at the incision...call the doc!! Otherwise, it's probably par for the course! :)

Hi Melissa,
What you are experiencing is very normal I had 2 c-sections one in 1994 and 1999. I had the same twinges and it is your body healing and probably some scar tissue. Sometimes I would get a burning feeling also, but this will go away with time. I had twinges for about 1 year after the c-section off and on and my doctor said it was normal. Melissa

I had a c section 9 months ago and experienced the same thing. I still experienced it now and then up through a month or so ago. I have not felt it again in a while. I am guessing it is common but if you are not sure ,ask your doctor. I can tell you I experienced the same thing and as long as it does not last or become severe, I am just chalking it up to an aftershock :)
