Possibly Moving to KC - Need Help with a Few Things

Hi -

I am possibly moving to KC in the next couple of months. I am a work-at-home mom (my job will move with me) who will need to know some things: Good neighborhoods (and ones to avoid), Christian preschools or Mother's Day Out programs, good churches. I am very nervous - we are moving from Dallas - but excited. Any feedback you can offer would be much appreciated.

What can I do next?

what a coincidence, my hubs' corp office is in Dallas and they're trying to talk him into moving there (as if he'd give up the luxury of his in home office haha) KC has many nice neighborhoods, we like it north of the river (Missouri)because when we bought, its where you could get the most home for your money. That may no longer be as true as it used to be, but with the wonderful new growth and relative lack of congestive traffic, its still where we'll look for our next homne if we stay in the state (i'm all for going home to Louisiana) There are some very nice areas in Kansas as well. The Overland Park/Shawnee areas. What you'll have to be careful of is where your husband will end up working. Its a very nice but very spread out city and traffic can be tough. Ive never lived in a place before that you could drive for hours, with no traffic and still be in the same metro area.
As for churches, they are many denominations and most have good schools, so without being more specific, that'd be hard to mention

I moved to Overland Park about 1 1/2 years ago and work from home as well. I do have some neighborhoods I would highly recommend because of friendliness. My youngest didn't go to preschool, but I can do some checking with friends to find a good one in the area. I know there are several they've been really happy with. Feel free to email me directly at ____@____.com

I lived in Dallas (Addison) when my son was 5mo. and let me tell you people are alot friendlier in Kansas City then they are in Dallas and you will do just fine. Parents as Teachers is a very good program to get you started just contact your local school .

Cindy,
Do you know what part of KC you are moving to? I have also been here my whole life, that's 22 years for me, but I may also be able to help. I look forward to your reply.

C., I would be happy to help you. I've lived in several locations around the KC metro, since 1988, so I have a pretty good idea of various neighborhoods. What more can you tell me? Where is your husband's new job? What kind of church are you looking for?

Looks like you are getting some great help, C.! My only advice is regarding schools and neighborhoods. If you have to move to the Missouri side you might check out the suburbs on the north side of the river or on the southeast side for better schools and safer neighborhoods. If you can live on the KS side, all of the schools are very well accredited and highly ranked and there are fewer unsafe neighborhoods. I've lived all over the metro area for 36 years now and even though KS is more expensive, I am more comfortable raising my family here knowing the schools are superior. On the other hand, if you are choosing private schooling, MO has a great choice of highly ranked Catholic schools and private, non-secular academies. Good luck, C.!

Hi C.. My name is S. Meyer and I work with Reece and Nichols. I am currently helping another family with their move to the Overland Park area (I met them on Mamasource) and I would love to offer you any help that you may need. There are several Christian preschools and Mother's Day Out Programs in the area. If you would let me know a little more about you, such as the price level of home that you are looking for now, what your current home and neighborhood are like, as well what you are looking for in your new home and neighborhood I would be happy to assist you. My email is ____@____.com I also have a relocation package that I can send you that will give you information about the area.

Hey there,
Not sure if you are looking in MO or KS, but I live in Olathe, KS, which is a suburb outside of K.C. Johnson County is one of the nicest counties in Kansas. As far as housing goes, you can get more house for less money in Olathe than in any other city in Johnson Co. My husband works on the plaza and it takes him about 35mins or so to get to work. Olathe and near by Blue Valley schools are extremely good. If you go a bit farther north you get in Shawnee Mission which is also a great school district, but houses are usually a bit more expensive. We go to church at St Michael and All Angels on 67th and Nall in Shawnee Mission---they have a beautiful nursery, and a a day school, they don't have a MDO, but lots of other churches in the area do. Good luck to you with this big transistion. God Bless
