It looks like we will be relocating to the Baton Rouge area. We won't move until we sell our house, but I am looking for advice and opinions on the area. A lot of what I have read on the internet has not been complimentary. Are you glad you live there? Pros/cons of the area. Where would you live? My husband's job will working in Geismore. He is willing to have a bit of a comute for ust to live in the right place. What about pre-school for 3 or 4 year old? What about regular schools for when kids are older? Are there nice parks, gyms, neighborhoods, mom's groups? Any info would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

My husband and I lived in Baton Rouge 20 years ago. We work there on a quarterly basis now so we are still in BR/New Orleans area several times a year. Covington LA is a great place. I'm not sure where your husband will be working, but just like any large metropolitan area, there are good and bad areas some very close together. As far as schools go, when I lived there most that I knew had their kids in private catholic schools. I can ask some friends we've made in Covington what their recommendations would be.

There are lots of beautiful parks there. The weather there is mild even in the winter. It rains a lot there, but you can grow anything. We had the best time growing tropical plants on the balcony of our townhouse. We also grew a great garden in containers.

You might go with the idea of renting until you can check out the different possibilities. Sorry I'm not very much help. I love southern Louisiana. The people there are warm and friendly. Lots of great cajun culture. It will be a wonderful adventure!

Blessings!

If you meant Geismar, you'll be closer to Gonzales than BR. And my understanding is that it's a nice area. I lived an hour and 20 minutes away in Slidell, LA for 20 year, St. Tammany Parish has great schools, parks, etc but it would be a long commute. I know the BR area has lots to offer.

Depending on where your husband will be working, you could look into moving just outside of Baton Rouge. Livingston Parish is really growing as is Ascension Parish depending on whether you want to live closer to I-12 or I-10. I live in Walker (Livingston Parish) which is just about 10 minutes from Baton Rouge. Traffic will be horrible no matter where you live. I think the public school systems are decent in both Livingston and Ascension. If you decide to live inside Baton Rouge, you would probably want to look into private schools. I grew up in Baton Rouge, pm me if you have specific questions.
