Okay, so I'm awake at 1:30 in the morning because my just turned 3 year old son is going to the dentist tomorrow to get his tooth pulled. He ran into a table and knocked his two front top teeth loose. One tooth retightened and the other tooth developed an abscess at the root and is infected. It has been causing him some pain and he runs a constant low grade fever; hence pulling the tooth. I am a nervous wreck knowing that my little man is being sedated tomorrow and is loosing his first tooth. Any positive tooth pulling stories out there, especially about young children? Also any prayers or good thoughts sent my way are appreciated. TIA
Thanks Mamas for all the stories, advice and support. My little guy did a wonderful job. He cried as they took him away but he came out smiling. I am so relieved that this experience is over but I am so proud of my son. He was braver than I was. :)
Are they giving him "laughing gas"...if so, he will be FINE. Once he "goes 'out of it'" He probably wont even remember....we all never did as children... :)
Hugs to you mama! He will be just fine! Say a prayer tonight, give him a big kiss--- The dentist will sedate him and he won't feel anything~ He will be ok and as long as you don't act all worried or worked up, he will do great! Put on a smile tomorrow and act like you aren't scared or nervous-I know how you feel-but you have to be strong for your little one. They should do it pretty quickly-so it won't be long before he is done. Good luck and get some rest!
I just said a prayer for you and your son to have peace in your heart and for him to get through this without any pain or discomfort.

It may be over by the time you get my response but we went through the same thing..abscess, etc. Very upsetting.
Our dentist removed it under novocaine and my son came through like a champ. He'll be OK. Good luck!
Well I know I am an adult, but all the teeth I have had pulled (6 total) were no problem. After I had my 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed I rested that day then went on a snow trip the next day.
But since this is your little guy, I do another story to share. Our friends 3 year old just had four of her upper teeth pulled about 2 or 3 months ago. She did great. They said she slept basically the whole day on and off and then the next day was pretty much back to normal. I saw her about a week after the pulling and she was 100%.

Why isn't the dentist doing anything to repair the tooth??
They can do a "baby root canal"(nothing like an adult root canal!) for the infection and pain, crown it and save it.
My son had to have a lot of work done at 3 and he did fine.
Oh he will be fine. My 3 year old has been sedated to have numerous cavities filled and caps on his front teeth. He did great! Well a short time later one of his caps fell off his tooth. Had to go back in to get it fixed. It was fast and painless. I was a nervous wreck. He did great. A couple weeks later it fell off again and we all decided to leave the cap off. Well wouldn't you know it got infected and formed an abcess. I felt horrible. So back we went to the dentist. They gave him antibiotics and was told to come back in a few days to put the cap back on. When we went back and his tooth was rather loose. So on the spot the dentist said we have to take it out. I about fainted. They put a gel on his gums some wouldn't feel the shots. He got 5 and didn't feel any. I couldn't believe it. Then all of a sudden they yanked and it was out. Painless! Not one tear.
my heart is with you as I am in a similar position with my 4 year old. He got his right front tooth knocked playing with our dog and it turned dark so we were afraid he might lose it. A visit to the pediatric dentist brought news we had not expected...10 cavities! Many in the molars which do not fall out until 11 or 12 so they need to be filled. Because they are in all 4 quadrants of his mouth and it would be too traumatic to go back and forth to the dentist to repair each area under numbing, they recommended he have surgery to do it all at once. I was terrified and went for a second opinion as all of our friends and family said it was a ploy for money since they were baby teeth however, the second opinion was the same. She said his teeth grow so close together that brushing alone was not enough! Who flosses their toddler's teeth??? So count your blessings that you don't have to put him under to repair 10 cavities. Our little ones can be rambunctious but they are also resilient with our love and care. Blessings to you and your family!!

My daughter had an abcess and a tooth removed and was sedated because she was very fearful. She was 7, but the sedation was fine even quite funny. you will have to keep an eye on your little guy..If you want to know what the child will act like you can youtube david goes to dentist.. that is exactly how my daughter acted under sedation. My youngest also had sedation for several fillings because she was highly un cooperative when we tried to do fillings just laughing gas.. Its not to big a deal but I was scared too! Good luck!
If you are going to a pediatric dentist know that they spend an additional 2 years *beyond* the 4 they spent in dental school to properly care for your little one and their teeth. They spend countless hours doing sedations usually in the hospital associated with the dental school. Your little man will do great.
The best advice I can give you is to REPLACE that tooth!!! I know too many 2-3 yr olds who lost a front tooth and the dentist said don't worry about it. THEY END UP HAVING SPEECH PROBLEMS!!!!!!! PLEASE insist on a fake tooth/flipper. Little ones need something there so they learn about tongue placement for many sounds which later translates to learning to read.
They sedating a 3 year old? My first born was 3-ish. She had fallen on her face, the tooth loosened but re-tightened. But an abscess formed and the tooth had to be pulled. She wasn't sedated at all and it was so easy. She never even cried. Your son will be okay. So will you.
