Poop Staining Cloth Diapers

I recently switched from using Seventh Generation to Charlie's Soap on my cloth diapers and I LOVE Charlie's Soap! I have been searching for a while for a detergent that is great for cloth (unlike the free & clear, which is what I started out with over a year ago) and yet affordable (we don't have a HE washer and so Rockin Green runs pretty pricey after a while!) Charlie's Soap was recommended to me at my local cloth diapering shop, and most of my cloth diapering friends use it, too. The diapers smell cleaner and come out of the wash soft and fresh.

The problem is that, all of a sudden, my son's poop is staining the diapers. This never happened with any of the other detergents. After my son has a poopy diaper, I scrape the mess into the toilet immediately, and then soak the diaper in a pail of water, usually overnight. This has always worked, but I noticed that the last three poopy diapers all came out of the wash with pale brown staining in the bum area. They smell completely clean (and the soap is unscented) and so I feel comfortable using them, but I'd still like to solve the problem. So what is going on? And does anyone else who uses Charlie's Soap have a trick to use to get the stains out? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I think the general consensus seems to be that my diapers need to spend some time in the sun! I wanted to try it out right away, so of course it rained all day. ^_^ I have tried the Borax, and it makes a significant difference! Thanks again!

Hello, I use cloth diapers as well- and we use Charlie's Soap!!! It has been my experience that we have always sprayed the poop off of the diapers, then I wash them as soon as possible. I do have a few stains on some of my inserts- but they have come out with the sunning process!!! I would recommend the next time that you wash them- lay them out in the sun to dry and this should remove the stains- sometimes this takes a few times-but usually works!!! I hope this helps- Good luck

This website is a good cloth diapering resource: http://pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm. Sunlight to fade stains on diapers is mentioned along with some other tricks. Also, if they're only stained I wouldn't worry too much about it. (Which isn't to say that it isn't nice to have clean looking diapers, just you know, don't break your neck trying too hard.)

I also say leave it on the dash of your car and let the sun bleach it out. Also you can start using fleece or rice liners to help out!

You might also try adding some borax to your soaking pail. Borax boosts your detergent's cleaning ability in the washer too. And ditto on the sunlight!

I had purchased quite a few used cloth diapers and had good success with fading slight staining by sunning the diapers for a full day in the bright, summer sun.

I totally agree with sunlight! It sanitizes them well, too.

My answer is actually unnessesary 'cause everybody else does some of the same things I do. My babes diapers have no poo stains at all, here's what I do:

Tide (no dyes/perfumes), and Borax in the washer (I don't presoak, I do a dry pail). And, I hang them out. I rarely ever use the dryer for them. So like I said, pretty much what the other mamas do!

I'm not saying Charlie's and other "cloth dipe" detergents aren't good but I think sometimes certain products can be a money making gimmick. I'd go back to what you were using before as long as it wasn't ruining your diapers (or your baby's skin for that matter). My mother-in-law cloth diapered nine kids and never had ruined diapers from Tide. And with nine kids she def. used the diapers over and over!

Is he eating something different or taking new vitamins? Both could cause this.
