Plugged Milk Duct

I had a plugged milk duct about 3 weeks ago. It is now fine (I am still breastfeeding) but there is still a small lump, about the size of a pea, where the plug was. Is this normal or should it have gone away completely? It does not hurt anymore, but was very sore when it first happened.

Hi S.,
If I were you I'd have my OB/Gyn check it. It is probably something benign just like the othe two posters have said, but I know I wouldn't be able to rest easy until my doctor checked and confirmed that it was 'nothing.' I have heard of women discovering they have breast cancer while nursing, and I'd hate for you to overlook something possibly dangerous b/c you think it is just a by-product of nursing.
I don't at all want to scare you, I just think it is better to be safe than sorry! Good luck. :-)

S....I am glad you got that plug cleared AND that you are still breastfeeding! I hope you managed without too much pain. What you are likely feeling is just a normal duct. It will probably feel firmer before nursing and softer after. I could still feel enlarged ducts nearly six months after weaning. Keep an eye on it and give it a little extra massage if you feel as though it isn't softening after nursing.

I had one of these before. It's called a galactocele. It will go away on it's own typically sometime after your done breastfeeding. :)

Normal, but massage it while your baby nurses to completely dissolve it. Next time plugged duct occurs, wet a disposable diaper and nuke it for like 10 seconds, maybe a bit more depending on your microwave- just not too hot of course- and hold it over the area where it's plugged. Instant relief, and really helps pass the plug. You can have the baby nurse at the same time, or pump to pass the milk quicker.

It sounds like it is still plugged up a little. When I have a plugged duct I always have to massage the duct until the bump goes down all the way. I massage it in the direction of the milk flow to encourage it to flow while I nurse. The position you nurse in could be causing that one area to clog up repeatedly too, so if you can vary the position so one area doesn't always get drained or another area always have pressure on it, that might help.
