Hi there mommy's...for once I am looking for advice for someone else other than myself. :) My cousin is going to be 25yrs old and has been trying to get pregnant for almost 2 years (since she got married). She has not yet been referred to infertility and her ob/gyn wants to start her on clomid. This is the first 'infertility' type drug she will be put on and she is very hesitant. She wants a baby sooo bad...but is so afraid of the side effects, outcomes, and multiples. She just feels extremely uninformed and is afraid of just taking it without being educated about it. I told her I would try and help and ask all you lovely ladies for advice since this site has been nothing BUT helpful and amazing. If you mommy's have any advice on clomid or starting out in infertility please give it to me. The good, the bad, the ugly, the do's, don'ts, side effects...ANYTHING at all. Thanks sooo much for all your help M.'s!!!

For my first pregnancy I used clomid, and did an IUI. It worked on the first try. For my second pregnancy, I used clomid again with no IUI, and I had twins. There is a risk of multiples, but not a huge percentage.

I used clomid to get pg for my first pg after being diagnosed with PCOS. I did end up with twins but never really worried about multiples since I didn't feel it was a huge risk. I also needed to use IUI with the clomid... I definately suggest seeing a fertility specialist over a reg OBGYN, unless they are specialized. I didn't feel there were any other side effects with the clomid and am very glad I used it! I did use it for 13mo's, which I now know is NOT recommended. I was 23 when I started using it and got pg at 24.

Hi!

I used Clomid to conceive. We did end up with twins, however they do run in my family. So, not sure if it was Clomid or genetics! In my case, I had missed an entire cycle without being pregnant, so my OB/GYN ordered a blood test that showed my progesterone was low. The Chlomid boosted my progesterone to promote ovulation.

When my doctor discussed Clomid with me, he said the rate of conceiving twins is 3% but if using Clomid it increases to 6%, which really isn't a lot. The only other person I know that conceived twins using Clomid also has twins in her family. I know plenty of others who have one healthy, happy baby! I also know others who've used it unsuccessfully.

Good luck to you sister!

She is so young and am currently counseling a few "infertile" couples with the same issues. One has to take a good hard look at nutrition and the supplements they are taking for their bodies. This study was just published about the importance of nutrition preconception: http://www.medpagetoday.com/OBGYN/Pregnancy/15188

There are other factors to consider, does she have PCOS, overweight, nutritional deficiencies? Has any doctor tested her for vitamin and mineral deficiencies? Especially Vitamin D3? http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/newsletter/pregnancy-and-g... The American Academy of Pediatrics is strongly recommending that all moms and moms-to-be get tested b/c too many babies are born deficient...all these things make a difference, but not many do this test unless requested...she can also go to places like Pulling Down the Moon where they do acupuncture, herbs, nutritional counseling. Hidden gluten sensitivity or Celiac Disease is a silent cause of infertility in MANY women: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art1507.asp but would have to get tested for it as well. http://www.examiner.com/x-7158-Chicago-Family-Health-Exam...

Hopefully this is plenty of info to start, please feel free to reply to me if you have any further questions:

Tell your cousin to insist that her doctor refer her to a specialist, either infertility specialist or a reproductive endocrinologist. Typically if someone has been TTC for a year without success, then they can be referred.

I'm shocked that the ob/gyn did not sit down and thoroughly discuss everything about Clomid. Our doctor (who was a RE) went over every last detail with us, including percentage success/failure, how it might affect implantation, multiples, side effects, you name it. And, NONE of my friends (I have several) who were on fertility meds have had multiples nor have they had issues with premature or ill babies.

I'm not saying an ob/gyn can't do as good of a job but if there are true issues with infertility, a specialist who works in this field exclusively is a much better option. It would be like having your general practitioner or family doctor do your skin cancer surgery. Sure, they'd do a fine job but a dermatologist (i.e. someone who deals specifically with the problem) would be a better choice.

Tell your cousin to do it. I needed to use Clomid to get pregnant everytime. I have 3 children (3 pregnancies)thanks to using Clomid. Each time I had to take it for 3 cycles before it worked though...I was up to 150mg. I never had any side effects and the chance of having multiples from Clomid is very very small. I have known many people that have used it and none have had multiples.
Hopefully, Clomid will solve her problem without having to see a fertility specialist!

Hi, Ok, you're going to think this is a crazy idea, but please have your cousin at least give it a try. I see a reflexologist and he says he has a very high success rate helping women get pregnant. I decided to tell a frien to go who's doctor said there was no way she was ever going to get pregnant ( she tried for years, never wanted to do fertility) well now she has a beautiful daughter who just turned one. I see friends who did fertitlity, they all have twins, born early in the ICU for weeks, hospital bills (their portion) pile up. It's so worth spending $100 to go see him. He's in the Lincoln Square area of Chicago. His name is Eric Huffman ###-###-####. It's SO worthwhile.

Best of luck to her!
