Please Help, My 7Mo Is Very Constipated

We started introducing step 1 orange vegi baby foods about two weeks ago. Our 7mo baby girl is now constipated. She has to push so hard, usually cries, and then only produces a small pretty firm little poop (sorry TMIF). Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Do I stop the food for now? Prune juice? Please help, I feel so bad for her.

acidophilus by Jaradophilus. It's totally safe and so good for this problem and the immune system. My kids actually love it.

Stop carrots for a little while, they are constipating and just give her a little bit of water and pears will help too.
good luck!

I'd pull back on the foods for a little bit and then increase the nursing. Sounds like her body isn't ready for solids. The first year is to be PRIMARILY breast milk (or formula if necessary) ... use the solids more like you would a treat.

Make sure she is drinking plenty of water. If you have given her jarred food, maybe stop and try introducing handmade veggie purees instead. We have done all homemade foods and have never had any constipation issues. It's really not hard to do...I actually really enjoyed making my sweet one's food! Try juices if it continues and definitely talk to her Ped if it doesn't clear up. Take care!

My daughter is 6 months old... I just stop breastfeeding, and she recently became constipated..I felt soo bad because breastmilk has a natural laxative, Now that I Introduced formula this has happened. But I have been feeding her pureed foods ever since she was 4 months. Started off making my own, but now she eats different cereals and pureed store bought. You have to make sure she has enough fluid intake. Apple Juice and Prune Juice, water down a lil... throughout the day. That will prevent constipation.!

we started food at 6 months also, very slowly and my daughter was still breast fed. she got a little constipated with the rice cereal and we switched to the baby oatmeal and added some prunes to it and it worked wonders. I made our own babyfood though (really easy, blender and water and used the super baby food book as my guide on what to start her on and when). we introduced foods slowly and made sure she was drinking water and nursing and had prunes fairly regularly (breakfast of champions I used to say!).
even now, at 21 months, I watch how much she eats that can cause constipation (no more than one banana a day, not too much cheese, enough fruit to balance the proteins and veggies) and she rarely gets constipated. She also drinks a ton of water and is very active, which I think help.
It's so tough to see your baby in pain like that, I would rub her belly in circles to help her when she was struggling and would pick her up so she's extended and not in a sitting position. seemed to help a little.
good luck to you

I had the same problem with my son, he tends to be constipated. I called the pediatrician and she recommended: 1 teaspoon of sugar in 5-ounces of warm water. I can't express to you how well this works! We give my son this mixture everyday, once a day, and his constipation is gone. If we stop for one day, the constipation returns. Just make sure you brush their little teeth after the sugar-water treatment! Best of luck!

Are you making your own food? maybe add more water to the food or breast milk. that is what i did. are you still giving her formula or breast milk? start very slow with the food and continue with formula or breast milk.
hopefully she gets better.

Try baby food prunes before trying prune juice (the longer you can wait to introduce juice, the better). Pears and peaches are also good foods to help relieve constipation. I don't think you need to stop solids altogether, but try offering some of the fruits and maybe in smaller quantities.

She's also old enough to drink water out of a sippy cup (or bottle if you prefer), so start having water on hand at all times and offer it to her throughout the day. Increasing her fluids will also help with the constipation.

I would Just stop.

There is no reason she has to eat those foods now.
For us, my Pediatrician takes things slow... meaning, 1 type of food group, per every 3 months. Not, a different thing each week or 2.

So, at about 6-7 months, we started with single grain cereal, then other types of cereal. Then, "orange" colored things like squash, then "green" colored things like peas/beans. THEN at about 12 months, "meats" in baby food form.

And, I NEVER had any problems with my kids bowels or poop as babies.

As the previous poster said, I would stop.
AND, at this age, you NEED TO NURSE ON DEMAND still. Per our Pediatrician, you need to nurse FIRST... THEN offer solids. Breastmilk/Formula is still their PRIMARY source of nutrition until 1 years old. Not solids or other liquids.

Try increasing her nursing intake.
Also I don't know what routine you have her on now... but if you are feeding her solids 3 times a day... then I would stop that as well, and just offer it 1 time a day. Or 2 at most. And give her sips of water too... but not so much that it supplants her breastmilk/Formulal intake. Just enough to soften her poop.

If giving her prune juice... it is only in terms of say 1 ounce or less. NOT all day, and not a whole lot, or you will get MASSIVE PROJECTILE poops! And then that will be diarrhea.

A baby's digestive and bowel system is still developing.... so there is no "rush" as for solids.

All the best,
Susan

I just had that same issue with my 7mo old this past week. I switched to giving her only pear baby food and increased the frequency of nursing her. It seemed to help her within a couple of days.

water, prune juice, a warm bath. it only happened once to my daughter and the bath did the trick. hope your little one feels better soon!
also, try making your own baby food, as it retains more nutrients that will keep her body working properly.

I started rice cereal with my daughter and once I got to a certain amount for the day, then she started to get constipated. I had trader joe's white grape juice for my older daughter, so I did 1/2 water, 1/2 grape juice, put it in a syringe (not a bottle) and just had to give 1-2 teaspoons and within a 1/2 hour we had action. That was for my 6 month old girl, who went from going after every meal, to not going for 3 days, but constantly "pushing".

I was afraid to do the prunes or peaches or other "p" foods, because I had only introduced the rice cereal at that point and worried about sensitivities and so forth.

After introing green beans and peas, I went to peaches and prunes, so now I can still give one of those "p" foods per day and keep her regular.

Good luck.
E.

You can introduce a new food every 3 to 4 days, unless your little one is prone to allergies. Try giving her a little water after eating. You can also do prunes. You can introduce oat meal, which should help. water can work wonders. Also try out a new food like peas. Since you have been giving 1 orange for two weeks already, you can switch off. One day orange, one day peas. Peas work wonders for my boys
