My son is 14 months old. He is teething really bad and doesn't want to eat. Because he is continuing drinking whole milk he is having some diarrhea.... He just wanted to eat banana... otherwise he spits the food. I tried chicken, rice, toasts, pasta... I don't know what and how to feed him... It's been 3 days like this with the food... (not with the poop)
Thanks moms!!!

What about soft, cold foods? Pudding, jello, applesauce, yogurt, fruit smoothies? Cold things will help with the pain and ask your pediatrician about correctly giving Tylenol or Motrin.

Try giving him a dose of Tylenol for the pain at least 30m before a meal. So if breakfast is at 9, give him some Tylenol at 8:30. That dose should get you through lunch also. Then if dinner is at 6, give him another does around 5:30p.

If he's at least drinking, he's fine. Also, you could try giving him some hard foods that will help put pressure against the teething.

cheerios
celery to mash on
hot dog chunks
chicken nuggets
frozen green beans

iced wash cloth

My daughter's doctor always said not to worry about food as long as she was drinking plenty of fluids. His exact words were, "I've never lost a baby to starvation." Banana's will help with the diarrhea, so that is probably a good thing.

When my daughter was teething so bad she couldn't/wouldn't sleep, we started freezing her pacifiers. They don't stay cold that long (so we had like 8 in the freezer) but it was enough to relief to help her. We did also use medicine at the worst times but to this day we still keep pacifiers in the freezer for when she just gets really worked up or upset, like after she scrapes her knee for example.

My pediatrician had us take her off the milk until her acidic BMs stopped. We just used Pedialyte, usually only for one night.

She never stopped eating but we would switch to really bland, soft foods, and NO CHEESE, during those times. The cheese might just be my kid but it seemed to make the diaper rash much worse.

Anyway, try the frozen pacifiers, my kid loved it. Good luck!

I think you don't gave to worry about the food right now, if he doesn't feel like eating is ok as long he's drinking milk , he will eat again when he's ready.....and the diarrhea is very normal when their teething, just keep him hidrated......

are you sure it's just teething? Have you had his ears checked?

That said, bananas are great for diarrhea. If you stick with soft foods like oatmeal, mashed taters, & that pasta he's refused.....then he should be okay. & while I know he hurts, it would also be better if you stick to your guns & don't allow him to live on the milk alone.

Don't stress, don't make yourself into a short-order cook.....offer the food that's soft enough for him to eat & don't give him the milk. He'll eventually eat! If he can eat a banana, then he can eat other soft foods! Be sympathetic, give him some Tylenol/Orajel .....& stand firm.

My son would refuse food as well when teething. Why don't you give him some pediasure? He could have 2 bottles a day. It is the highest caloric beverage you can give a child, and full of vitamins. It is artificial, which I am not thrilled about, but my son went through a lot of GI issues, and we needed the supplementation from pediasure. It is also lactose free.

At this point i would turn to meds. I usually wouldnt for teething pain, but if they are that miserable I would give in. My trick that we learned with our first was to put a pop can in the fridge over night, then set it in the freezer for about fifteen minutes. You'll want to watch it closely so it wont explode. Then just let them carry it around. They can place it against there cheek or depending on where they are teething chew on it(normally good for first few front teeth only). Just letting them carry it around though makes them feel more in control. Show your babe how to hold it up to his cheeks for added comfort. You may just for the time being want to go back to the thicker baby foods too. It wont confuse him. It may comfort him. Kids know when mama is trying to help. They may not be able to put an name on it. They do get that your not giving them food that hurts to chew though. Good luck. Teething is the pits with some little ones!!

You can freeze yogurt and then see if he will eat that, try applesauce or frozen grapes cut in pieces. Our Dr. always says if they eat an oz. of food a day per year they are old they will live, try not to worry. It is hard but if they are hungry they will eat eventually. Mine are 4 & 7.

Milk actually makes diarrhea worse. So does all dairy. Give him lots of fiber (oatmeal, fresh veggies) and lots of liquid. Pedialyte will help too. Fruit is good, but I would limit it (it always makes my son's diarrhea worse). Crackers, dry toast, warm peppermint tea are all of my son's favorites when he's not feeling good. Go by the BRATT diet - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast, and Tea.
Go by his cues, he won't starve himself :)

My DD also stops eating when she's teething. The longest she has gone is 4 1/2 days. (she was still nursing though, so I wasn't too concerned...)

You could get a mesh feeder, and put banana chunks in it. Freeze it, and let him go to town! The cold will feel good. You could even throw some green beans, peas, or whatever in with the banana, then he can get some extra nutrition without knowing. ;)

Have you tried giving him infant tylenol (or motrin)?

((When WE have mouth pain, our dentists give us narcotic pain relievers... mouth pain is *huge* and it's temporary. If you haven't taken the edge off of it for him, please, go ahead.))
