My 5 month old son has been constipated for about one month. Of course it started about a week and a half after we started him on rice cereal. After the rice cereal he as been getting Gerber veggies stage one. He only gets it one a day because I'm not trying to wean him off breast milk yet. Since this has started we've been giving him the gerber apple prune juice too. I've talked to the nurses at the hospital he goes to and they recommended baking soda baths, juice, stimulating him with a thermometer, rubbing his belly and last babylax. Nothing worked but the babylax. Now through out all of this he has had three bowel movements. The first was after about 5-6 days we tried all of the above and nothing worked. Thats when we tried the babylax (which worked). It took another week of warm baths and belly rubs before he was able to go again, and another week before we had to use the babylax again. that was 5 days ago and nothing since. we've cut back on the baby food and give all the breast milk he wants and the prune juice throughout the day. I've been trying to get him in to see the Dr. but so far nothing until the 17th! ( gotta love hospitals) I dont want to keep using the babylax because they can become dependant on it. Please help
Oh and his poop isn't hard. Its thicker than before but still soft and ribbon like

What can I do next?

Try to give him baby foods that have alot of fiber, but I do want to say dont wait to long if he continues to have constipation. My daughter who is now two started with constipation problems around 6 months also when we started to give her baby foods. We took her to a doctor who put her on some medication which I cant remember what it was but it didnt work at all. I argued with the doctor whom was a Pediatric GI doc, that she was not getting better but he told me to just give her more medicine. In the end I had to take my daughter to the ER which she was now about 8 months old and they sent me to another GI Specialist. This doctor took me seriously and did several work ups on my daughter, we found that she had chronic constipation and since the other doctor did not treat her right and it took so long for me to get a second opinion her bowels were now swollen and stretched from being so constipated. She now takes miralax everyday and the GI doc that we currently see says she might have to be on it until she is 5. Fortunately miralax is not harmful and she can be on it for a long period of time. But I urge you to not wait and do what ever you can to resolve the problem soon. Dont be afraid to stand up to a doctor if they are not helping you. Dont be afraid to get a second opinion. Something like this can cause permanent damage if not taken care of properly.

Apple/prune juice does work, just takes a little while to work. (I prefer the apple/prune juice) It doesn't have enough prune juice to give him diarhea. A bottle of water with a tbsp of dark karo syrup works. With mine bananas seemed to help loosen em up. (mine get diarhea if they eat too many.) If it has been 2-3 days a glycerin suppository works also. This should really be your last resort. Good luck. My last one is always having poopy issues. Good luck!

Have you tried giving him water? I've heard many doctors say that there is enough water in breast milk/milk but there is nothing better than plain water, I offered this before I gave my babies their next feeding, they were actually thirsty and not hunger and their feeding were futher apart. My daughter (first born) had painful bowl movements, I attributed this to too much milk, things got better once we gave her less milk. I would be weary of the PRUNE JUICE = GAS!! anyone who suffers from gastritis usually suffers from constipation or painful stools.

GOOD LUCK!!!
