I am practically in tears writing this, because I don't know what else to do for my daughter. She just turned 2 end of July and already has "reactive airways" or pre-asthma. The nebulizer has to be brought out for every cold, poor thing. Anyways, she just started pre-k 3 days a week in August. The first week of school she came down with cough, runny nose. Took her to the doctor, said it's viral. 2 weeks later, she still had it. Took her back to the doctor. They found a small ear infection, put her on antibiotics, and said hopefully the cough will clear up with it. It didn't. Took her back to the doctor, they put her on a round of 2 week antibiotics. At this point, we were at week 9 of cough and runny nose off and on. Towards day 11 of antibiotics, everything cleared up! Yay! She finished them up, was perfectly healthy and now 3 days later, she woke up again runny nose, cough, and watery eyes (watery eyes is new symptom). Being that she got a yeast infection that we are still treating from all the antibiotics, I don't want her on any more. But I want her healthy and this now week 11 of coughing! What is going on? I am beginning to think allergies, because they do run in our family. What were your childs symptoms of allergies? Is it painful to test for allergies? I am calling tomorrow, but because it is Sunday, I can't do anything today. Please help, I just want my daughter to not suffer anymore!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We found out today that she tested positive for RSV. Really upset by this, she was almost hospitalized at 5 months with it. It is really uncommon for kids her age to get it, but she does have it. At this point, I will probably pull her out of school until January. She has to go back then, as I will be in nursing school. At least it will give her body a little time to heal and recover!

**We had her tested for allergies. She was awesome, no tears! Out of the 10 things she was tested for, she came back with a high allergy for 3 of them. Grass, dog and eggs. She is doing much better, on an inhaler and doing very well!

Coughing could be due to allergies (especially since she is having the runny nose too) or it could be allergy induced asthma. I have both and sometimes the cough will drag on for an eternity. This last time they put me on Singulair and it helped dramatically.

Eliminate dairy, wheat, and organge juice- they all add to the mucous. Try to give her diluted fresh squeezed lemon juice. Give her lots of sunshine. Also, for symptoms give her a homeopathic remedy, Hyland's C-Plus Cold Tablets. They don't cure, but they sure give good relief. Soverign Silver is helpful in combating virus, bacteria, and fungus and it's natural and you can buy it at Whole Foods or health food store. Buy Probiotics while you are there too to replenish her good bacteria in her gut - might help with the yeast infection. Good luck.

She is now very yeasty from all the antibiotics, which cause allergies to food. I would seek out a NAET practitioner to eliminate all her allergies. Do to NAET.com to find one near you. Drs cannot cure the core problem they will just keep throwing meds at it because that's all they have! Also get her on a good probiotic like I-Flora for Kids and take her off all dairy products for now.

My son almost never got sick in preschool (but the school had 2 chemo patients... and a SUPER strict "no sick children" policy)... but in K. OH my god. He was sick at least 1 week out of every month. (One reason why K didn't USED to have an attendance policy is that most kids USED to be out sick 25% - 33% of the year. Now, of course, people just bring their sick kids to school... but that's a rant for another day.

1st grade was better. About 1 week every other month (we'd already started homeschooling by then, but he's in tons of outside classes and has friends in the "germ stew". And the year after that - nearly nothing.

But yeah... it's common for kids to be *actually* sick practically the entire first year they are in daycare or school.

For starters a lot of kids are sick all the time from day cares as they are exposed to everything. My neighbor finally had to pull her son out of day care and get private care for him. And yes it could be allergies, get childrens Zyrtec and give it a try. If it is allergies this will relieve the symptoms. If this doesn't help it is more then likely not allergies. And yes, allergy testing is painful to a child. My daughter asked to have it done when she was in middle school. She said she would never have it done again. They take several small needles and prick several spots on their back and then wait to see what ones they react to. Some of them swelled up right away. If they turn red and swell up then they are allergic to that spot of whatever it is the doctor put there. They use dog, cat, grass, dirt, dust mite, different trees, etc...I forget how many pokes she had on her back but it wasn't pretty and it was painful. A friend of mine is in her 30's and has had a viral infection off and on for the past four months. She takes antiobiotics to clear it up and it starts up again a day or two later. That's from working with the public every day. I say get her a private sitter and take her out of day care. I have been in enough day cares to know they are not as clean as they should be and the children do not get the attention that they need.

I would recommend taking her out of preschool for a year at least. Let her body heal without being constantly exposed to all these other kids and their germs,. It is fine for some kids - but yours is more susceptible and cannot handle it right now. This was the case with many people I know - eventually their kids were fine - but they needed to take them out of the germy preschool environment for awhile.

I am a certified Homeopath and I would suggest you call a good Homeopath and work with them they could help you with no problems. Yes the allergy testing is painful, go the natural way before you think of doing that, she can be helped easily. She needs her immune system built up...way too many antibiotics. She needs a strong acidophilus right now to help her put the good flora back into her system.

It could be allergies. It could be a genuine cold/viral infection. It could very well be both together. Anytime children are in an environment with other children who are sick, you can expect your child to get sick as well. Can you take her out of this pre-k and keep her home? Is that an option or is she there because you work? The best place to be is at home, free from viral germs.

I'm surprised the doctor has put her on antibiotics without knowing for sure if it is bacterial or viral. If she indeed has a viral infection, antibiotics will NOT work and you are wasting your money on medicine she doesn't need and flooding her body with medication that she does not need. Now she has a yeast infection. The poor baby is overloaded! The cough could also be viral. Bronchitis is common and also viral. My pediatrician has always said to treat the symptoms...cough medicine when needed otherwise let it run its course. One of my children had a cough for well over two months. I would suggest you get a cool air humidifier in her bedroom for night time. I've used one on all of my children whenever they were sick and it really does help.

Once you child is better, I would definitely get her to see an allergist. I do not know if children are tested the same way as adults but I have allergies, as do my children and yes, allergies ARE inherited! You can bet that whatever mom or dad are allergic to, your children will have the same allergies...sometimes more, sometimes less. I have been tested and it was not painful but again, your daughter is 2 so I do not know how they test children. For adults, it's a matter of sitting still for some time while the allergist places allergens all up and down your arms or back.
Symptoms for allergies are sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, itchy throat and ears. But some of these symptoms are identical to a cold so you really need to get her healthy first.

Contact me and let me send you some info. This is what I do for a living and I think I can help. Allergies are related to low immunity. Let me give the names of some supplements that will help build your daughters immunities. Starting now before winter really sets in will help her to fend off colds and viruses. I also have some recommendations about what you may have in the house that could be contributing to asthma or allergies.

Presume, just for the moment, that allergies are likely.
Clean out her bedroom, her bed.
No rugs, no curtains, no fluffy bed covers.
Is there a cat? Cat is NOT allowed in her room.
Learn some breathing exercises and then teach them to her,
to increase lung capacity, strength.
Don't get her tested yet.
Try an elimination diet.
Feed her some probiotics.
Good luck, mom.

She may have "walking pneumonia" which is when a cold just does not get better, but actually worse. My 13 year old daughter had it at about age 10, and it seemed like one thing after another that I treated with OTC meds. No fever, exhaustion, just feeling awful. Doctor put her on some really strong antibiotics and she needed to be seen after she was done with meds. A lung photo should show if this is what she had I believe. Unfortunately medicine is not an exact science, but when they are so little the trial-and-error method is very difficult to accept. I would either insist of further tests or get a second opion. Good luck

Such great suggestions!
If it's of any use, my husband, daughter and I are just getting rid of the month long cold we have had!! I haven't had one like this in ages. Same with a few others(parents, mainly) at my daughter's preschool. So it's possible it could have started out as that and morphed into something else. If they gave your daughter amoxicillan, that could be a culprit in not fully kicking it (if indeed it was bacterial)- it makes you feel like you are better but then a few days after the round is over, you get sick again. If I ever have to take antibiotics, which is rare, I request that they give me something other than amoxicillan - I literally request some KICK BUTT antibiotics that are fully going to knock it out and not help contribute to super germs, which I believe weak antibiotics do.
We finally kicked our drainage with a decongestant that really dried us up and left no "goo" for infection to grow. Finally, after five weeks, I am better. Hallelujah ...

.What are you feeding her? NO sugar, check out Feingold- he knew this problem a generation ago.
Antibiotics have the statistic of resulting in more illness, and now that all the friendly bacteria have been killed= yeast of course.
Probably not allergies.
Please please check Fiengold before you start having folks stick her.
And WestonPrice will also give you what she should eat.
Call Simplexity and get their Bifidus- it is the best for her age 800-800-1300,
or contact me w/a private msg- I think I have some to hand.
She was not healthy for those 3 days- it just took that long for opportunistic organisms to fill up the space where the friendly bacteria had been before the antibiotics.
Let me know if I can help, k

You might want to consider taking your daughter to a naturopath, and/or a homeopath for alternatives that you're not getting right now. I've known quite a few people (and I'm one of them) who got great results for themselves or their children through alternative medicine. This can be, and usually is, used in conjunction with standard Western medicine, so you don't have to choose one or the other. But it could give your daughter the boost she needs.

I've also heard that chiropractic adjustments can be helpful – some people claim they clear out all sorts of symptoms. Whether they actually give your daughter relief from her chronic problems or not, she might enjoy them, and feel more comfortable in other ways. I know when I've been coughing for days or weeks, it throws my spine and ribs out of whack, and I feel better after getting an adjustment. Be sure to ask whether the chiropractor has experience working on little kids if you want to try this.

i haven't read all the answers you've gotten. but my aunt got this way one year. she was working in an elementary school that was fairly new. except it had black mold. she was so sick with cold like symptons and she was miserable. the dr's could do nothing for her. if it's an older school, could be a mold problem. not everything is do to the food they are eating :). it could just be a really nasty cold though.

What steps have you taken around the house to eliminate any and all household chemicals that she could be having a reaction to? Also nitrates in meats can cause breathing difficulties for many. We have in the past year eliminated known toxins in our house, and I and the boys are allergy free. I shared what I learned with my sister, and her youngest is now allergy free. That means off of meds and inhalers. Also- make sure you are giving your daughter probiotics to bring her intestinal bacteria back to normal levels! Please msg me if you want more info on what we are doing to keep our family allergy free!

No dairy products, no flour products, no gluten and no sugar. Feed her lots of fresh foods, whole grains, beans, veggies, light fruits and water. You're worried about nutrients and such? Make her a smoothie each day, put raw almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds and ground chia seeds in it. Use coconut water as a base, add a leaf or 2 of kale or collards. Add some blueberries, strawberries (frozen good too) and banana. There is a great powder by Amazing Grass called Kidz something or other they have it in chocolate or berry flavor, it's by far the best of powdered vitamin things, clean and garbage free.
