Planning for 2Nd Baby

We are planning to try for baby #2 soon- yay :) And this may seem a little silly to ask but is there anything special or specific I need to do before I get pregnant? When I was trying to get pregnant with my daughter it took about 6 months and I was working with a doctor/nurse because my ex-husband had some issues. As far as I know there shouldn't be any issues this time (new husband) except that I am on medication for migraines and Interstitial cystitis (bladder inflammation) and BC- obviously I will stop the BC and I need to stop taking the migraine meds because they say specifically on the bottle "do not take if you are pregnant" and I don't think I can take the IC meds either. I did speak with the pharmacist and he said that the migraine and IC meds will be out of my system in a week but I was going to allow a month- just in case. Is this something I need to check with my doctor about first? I have taken myself off the migraine meds last summer and I did fine for almost a year and then my migraines started to come back- I think they were food related though- I found out I am gluten (wheat) intolerant. Also I have been losing weight and I was going to try to lose a little more just so I am in better shape before I get pregnant and gain weight- although with my daughter I was so sick I actually lost weight the first 4 months. Oh, also what about vitamins? I don't take them now and the only ones I could keep down with my daughter were the Flinstone chewable ones. Should I start taking something now? Like I said, this may be something silly to ask but I just want to make sure I am starting off right :) Thank-you in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank-you for all the advise. I am using this month (November) to wean myself off all my medicines and switch to pregnancy-safe ones that I can take just in case my IC symptoms become too painful and I need to take the medicine. I have also picked up a bottle of prenatal vitamins and extra calcium (my mom just found out she has osteopenia so I am at a higher risk now too) at the store and have been taking them every night and I'm not sick! Yay! Hopefully my body will be used to them and when I do become pregnant, I can continue to take them. I am also still working on losing more weight and getting more healthy. I have lost 30 pounds this past year and I am trying to lose about 10 more. This is also the last month for my Nuva-ring (birth-control) so December we will start trying and we hope to be pregnant by February at the latest. Also I just had my yearly exam a few months ago and everything was fine so I am OK on that front. Thanks again for all the advise!

i don't know about the rest, but if you are bothered with bladder issues, there is a natural solution that will be safe for you while pregnant. It is called Clear Tract. My late mother had lots of broblems with bladder infections and I bought this in a powder form, had her mix it with her fiber drink every morning and she never got another UTI unless she stopped taking it.
The product is d-Mannose and I don't know how it works, only that it does! You can google it and find more information.

Yes, I think you're right with giving yourself a little extra time off the meds before trying to get pregnant again. I've heard that many of the over the counter prenatals are just as good as the prescriptions. Make sure whatever you get has plenty of folic acid in it! My dr suggested started prenatal vitamins as soon as there is any chance of you getting pregnant (when you go off bc). Since it's just a vitamin it won't hurt anything to take a few extra - even before you're trying! I had trouble with keeping down my prenatal vitamins too and I started taking them about an hour after dinner at night and it seemed to help. I think having food in my stomach from dinner and then also just going to bed a few hours after taking it helped me not feel yucky from them! Hope this helps, and good luck! :)

I would first go to your OBGYN and get a pap done to make sure those 'parts are all ok" when you are in their consult him about your medications. There may be alternatives. Get OFF your BC NOW...it takes time for your body to flush out all those hormones and when you are actually ready to TRY to get preggo with #2, your body will be too. Last but not least, get on the prenatals. I always took the generics from Target and I took them at night. I always got sick when I took them during the day. So try taking them before bed. Taking them now before your are prego could help you not get sick when you are prego since your body will be use to the pills.
Congrats and good luck. Im still afraid to say "lets try to double to fun"

You should start taking some type of prenatal vitamins right away. Loosing weight is also a great idea so you can be in a good shape when you get prego again. Drink lots of water and if you drink caffeine I would recommend you start cutting yourself off little by little. We are going to start "trying" next year for baby #2. And I have already started taking some prenatal vitamins, have stopped drinking coke, and well I have to get around to getting up an hour earlier so that I can start working out on loosing weight. I am also very exicted, can't wait. I have a 3 year old baby girl and would love to have a baby boy, but we are up for either a healthy baby boy or a healthy baby girl. Either or as long as we both are healthy. Congrats and good luck!

He is some other info that I found out after the fact, you should wait at least 1 month after going off BC to try to conceive. I am the happy & proud mother of 1 year old twins boys. I later found out that sometimes your body hyperovulates when you go off the pill and that is probably one of the reasons I conceived twins. Good luck :)

Start pre-natal now...can't hurt, they are good at any time. The folic acid is what is needed, so the chewables don't always have enough. Talk to your doc, maybe there are different meds that you can take, and it is good to know if there are any OTC drugs you can take in their place if you need to. Also, I don't think I had a migraine while preggers, either time. I have been told that they can be hormonal, and that is why. Whatever the reason, it was nice!

It sounds like you are already on the right track. Have you ever taken Feverfew (an herb)for the migraines? Ask your doctor about it. Something in it helps reduce the inflamatin of blood vessels which in turn reduces the headaches. I used to take it and it helps, but I barely ever get migraines anymore and when I do, I have found that it is due to dehydration so as long as I drink enough water, no headaches. i don't know if you can take the Feverfew if you are pregnant. To help your first child to prepare for the one coming, use a baby doll to teach that child how to care for a baby gently. I should have done that because my 1st was 3 1/2 when I had my second and she was kind of rough on her dolls and I couldn't really let her help me as much as I would have liked with our 2nd because she was too rough. It's nice when you include the 1st child in caring for the new baby so they feel included. (all is good though, they are 4 & 7 and have a great relationship!)

It's not crazy at all. I had this conversation with my doctor before we started "trying". He suggested a complete physical, including blood work, for BOTH of us. According to him, many couples experience infertility because of an imbalance that could be easily corrected. He also suggested being consistent with a multivitamin and drinking plenty of OJ for the folic acid.

We got pregnant within a month of trying and it may not have been due to the check-ups, vitamins and OJ, but I assure you that when we try again this summer, we will do all of the above!

Make sure you start taking Folic Acid, BEFORE you get pregnant. Deficiency of it can cause neural tube deffects like spina bifida, so its very important.
Also, avoid artificial sweetners and alcohol.
Good luck!

It's best to start vitamins before you get pregnant so that they are in your system and aiding in the development from the beginning. Actually, all women of child-baring age who are sexually active should be taking them for that reason! You want at least a multi-vitamin/multi-mineral and 800 folic acid. If you don't take a prenatal, then get a second folic acid pill because a basic multi- probably has just 400. If you're puking your vitamins back up, then you have 2 options (well, you have more than two, but there are two BEST options). 1) Take them before bed when you are least likely to puke or 2) insert them vaginally (this is the best thing to do any time you're puking and can't keep meds/birth control down!).

I'd get the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and learn to chart your cycle so you know exactly when you're fertile. We got pregnant the first time we tried with each of 3 kids because I knew when I was fertile instead of assuming it was kinda-around day 14ish :P
