Pinkeye? - Statesville,NC

Hello! For the past couple of weeks or so, my baby has had one eye that always turns red when he eats something (like a bottle usually) and tears up. He doesn't have his 9 month old check up yet, even though, he is 9 months and 2 weeks now. He won't be going in until he is exactly 10 months old. He doesn't seem to be in any pain but he'll rub his eyes every now and then like he's tired, which is what I'll assume. The redness in one eye is not severe - it is just bothersome for me because I am not quite sure if it is anything to worry about. I would have taken him before now, except I don't have a reliable vehicle at the moment, so I have to rely on other people for their cars. That is also why he doesn't go back to the Doctor until October! Am I over analyzing and worrying about something I shouldn't be? Like I said, it turns red and tears up but it's in one eye, it's obviously not contagious. He gets baths every other night and he is a very clean baby. I have just noticed lately, it hasn't gone away. And it's not there all the time, just when he wakes up or is really tired or is drinking a bottle. It's strange but it really has made me wonder. What should I do? Does anyone know what this could be? Thank you in advance for your answers!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your all your responses. If it gets worse - I will take him to the doctor. But I am thinking it is allergies. I have had allergies all my life (animal and seasonal) and there is a cat and a dog in the home. They shed like crazy and it is all over the floor when he crawls. I try to vacuum and clean up as much as I can but it is not my place. But thank you again - you all made me feel a lot better about it!

If you're breastfeeding, you can put a few drops of breast milk in his eye. Breast milk will clear the infection. Breast milk is liquid GOLD!

Peace,

Doesn't sound like pink eye, which is highly contagious. You can squirt just a few drops of breastmilk in his eye though just in case. It truly is the best remedy! Works every time. And can't hurt.

It's more likely a mild reaction to what he's eaten--what is in his bottle? Perhaps that needs to be looked at and possibly changed.

Their is a big connection between the eyes, nose, ears, throat in infants. My son would get "pink eye", but it was really an ear infection. Make sure he isn't laying down when he is drinking his bottles. Laying down while drinking, increases fluid in ears, which leads to ear infections and can lead into pink eye. Hold him upright or sit him in a car seat or something. See, if that helps.

I know this may just be one suggestion amidst a myriad of others, but I have had very good luck with using an eyebright herbal tea on eyes for infections and redness. Use a clean cotton ball, dip in the tea, start at the tear duct with the eye closed and wipe toward the outer part of the eye, use a new cotton ball for each swipe. I cured my own pinkeye when I was pregnant doing this, my doctor concurs & he has had good results with it. You can get eyebright at any whole food store or herbal supplement store, and it's cheap.

it doesnt sound like pink eye, (when our dd had it, it got pussy, but it could be not as severe as hers was) but he could have something really irritating it that needs to be checked out. I don't like to mess with eye stuff, so I'd take him in.

You may want to try washing his hands before feeding. Many babies rub their eyes when they are tired. if he is picking up allergens from the floor (crawling), this may be the culprit. You have to use soap, not just a rince.

I am very allergic to cats and if I even touch stuff they have been sitting on, then touch my eyes, they swell up!!

Best of luck!!

if it is pink eye you can run a gold ring over the duct and it will go away. it also may be allergies. actually sounds more like allergies to me.

It doesn't sound like pink eye. When my kids get it, after they have a nap, their eyes are stuck shut from the discharge that you have with it. Also with pink eye, the eye tends to be weeping all the time usually with a yellow to green discharge. Their eyes will also swell up and be red and puffy all the way around.

It could be a clogged tear duct. Pink eye usually crusts over when they wake up. Calling the doc is easy though, usually you will get a nurse and they will ask the doc and call you back. Take a warm washcloth and wipe it when you see it.

I have heard of babies having a blocked tear duct, though usually younger ones. If it is pink eye it will probably get worse with a lot of sticky yellowish discharge. I did manage to avoid pinkeye for myself when my son had it by washing around my eyes with tear free baby shampoo.

It's not pinkeye. If it was, his eye would most likely be mattered and crusted shut every morning or whenever he slept (and you probably would've found a way to the Doctor by now, had it not cleared up).

Sounds like a slight irritation (like an ingrown eyelash or blocked tear duct) or an allergy. Maybe call a nursing hotline or something. I typed 'nurse hotline' on my AVG/Yahoo 'Search' and came up with this link: http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oG7_LYxJBMrB8BNnBXN...

Otherwise, wipe his watery eye and tell the doctor about it on your 9/10 mo. visit.
