So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone and their advice...the worst was the first day but after that it toned down. I just kept both eyes cleaned with a warm cloth and continued with the eye drops and antibiotics. She's back at school feeling 100 percent. I also went out and bought the lysol magic soap dispenser so she would be extra clean....:)

I used collidal silver when my son broke out in hives from the antibiotics. Look into it first because everyone I knew freaked out about it, but it worked fine for me. =)

Not sure how old she is, or if you have a baby in the house, but if you have breastmilk, I would drop that in her eyes or make a cool compress with a washcloth soaked in it. Breastmilk is anti-bacterial and very healing.

Sometimes pinkeye is caused by a strain of strep, so it is good to have her on oral antibiotics. Watch out that she is healing rather than getting worse- sometimes the eye drops can have preservatives that can further irritate the eye, or if they are antibiotics, you can have a topical reaction to them in the eye as well.

I would wash everything she leans her head on in VERY hot water with white vinegar in the wash or rinse (antibacterial) and do this daily. Make sure she (and you) are washing your hands a million times a day to keep the germs at bay as much as possible.

Make sure you are wiping door knobs, stair rails, light switches, etc that you touch with white vinegar as well. Make sure you wash her stuffed animals, anything she loves and plays with/touches daily, pillow cases, hand towels, gloves/mittens, throw pillows on the couch (if she leans her head there) etc.

If she wears glasses, disinfect the glasses a few times a day with white vinegar as well. If she wears contacts, make sure you leave them out until the infection is cleared and then get NEW ones!!

Be sure to finish the antibiotics and drops as directed, even if she is clearing up, so as to not make the bacteria resistant in the future.

Rest, rest, rest, get as much vitamin C as you can into her.

Hugs,
M.

We use colloidal silver from the health food store. It's a natural antibiotic and it's a clear, odorless liquid that you can drop right into the affected eye. We use it all the time just to stay healthy! Good luck!

Green tea bags will cure pink eye. Steep tea bag in water. Let in come to room temp then take the bag & place it over eye. It does not burn. I've used this remedy on my 3yr. old. Don't squeeze all the liquid out of the tea bag before placing it over the eye. Do this for about 5 minutes at least 2 times. I've heard that black tea works as well.

Be sure that you are using a clean washcloth each time you wipe her eye. And don't let that same cloth touch the other eye or they will both get infected. Wipe as soon as you see the goop. And be sure to wash your hands with soap and water after each time you come into contact with the goop. Those were the instructions our pediatrician gave to me. Honestly, the first 24 hours sucked, but it seemed to clear up pretty quickly.

My SIL just did her externship for Medical Assisting in a pediatricians office. And the pediatrician there told her that good old Visine works wonders for pink eye (assuming there aren't any other actual infections that would require an antibiotic drop).

Warm compresses with a wash cloth. Fortunately, I think the medicine goes to work pretty quickly, so hopefully she will be a lot better soon. Hope she feels better soon, and no one else catches it. I searched home remedies for pink eye as well, but a lot of them seemed a little off the wall. However, this one is one that I have done in the past for puffy eyes and it doesn't burn or anything:

Place a moistened chamomile tea bag over the affected eye. You don't need to make a tea out of the chamomile, just soak the bag under cool, running water. Let the bag rest on your eye for 10 minutes. Do this each night until the pink eye goes away. It usually takes a day or two to work.

Why did she get antibiotics and eye drops? Eye drops are the antibiotic and will treat the pink eye she does not need antibiotics on top off it unless she is sick with something. A warm compress for her eyes to help loosen the eye goop in the morning.

Camomille tea! Brew a cup, let cool to room temp, use a clean cotton ball for each eye, dip in the tea, wash out eye. Repeat frequently. You can test it on yourself, it doesn't burn at all.
Used it on my 3 kids, never used antibiotics. Compared to neighbor's kids, camomille is just as fast as antibiotics.

Which child has it? She must be cautioned over and over again not to rub or touch her eyes. Use a fresh clean washcloth EVERY time you wipe the goop. (maybe just dampen a paper towel so you can just throw it away).

My daughter picked it up from my son's friend when she was less than 3 yrs old. It was torture getting the drops in her eyes... but it works. Since then, I have had it myself... and according to my doctor, you run the risk of getting "pink eye" anytime you are exposed to a cold. There is not a "pink eye" germ. It is just getting a "cold" in your eye! So whenever you are sick, try not to touch your eyes. You increase the risk of spreading your cold to your eyes...
I don't know of any home remedies... but if you have the doctor's instructions, and prescriptions for it, why would you want to use home remedies on top of that?
Wash hands. Wash hands. Wash hands.

Keep her hands away from her eyes/face and wash her hands as soon as they go near her face. Wash her pillow case daily until it's gone for 3 days. When she gets her bath, take some diluted baby shampoo and wash along her eyes like you would to remove makeup...it will remove the live bacteria.
