Pinch Resistant Garage Doors

This request is from my husband, actually. He works for a major garage door company and is doing some research into pinch-resistant garage doors. Is there any interest in a garage door with this as a safety feature? Would you be willing to pay a little extra for a garage door with this feature? Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mamas!

When I read it, I didn't know what you meant either. Guess that affirms that the term "pinch resistant" in and of itself would not be a selling point. And, since most of us haven't been pinched and don't even know how one could get pinched, seems like the concept wouldn't be a selling factor at all.

Now, contrast that to how many people get pinched by house doors and car doors -- you'd have something there!

I'm not sure what you mean either. I always keep my children away from the door when closing it. Mine, also, has a sensor, so that it can't close on anything below the door while it is going down. Doing so would cause the door to immediately raise. I don't think I would spend any extra money on something that I could prevent just by taking the extra step to make sure my children are away from the door as it is closing.

What is a pinch resisant garage door? Do you mean one that is impossible to get your fingers into when rolling it up or down or something else?

Well, I guess a little more clarification might help, but going on what I think you mean, here is my thoughts. I have never been pinched by a garage door, nor has anyone I know..nor have I ever heard of that actually. Not to say that it doesnt happen, but I would not think of it when purchasing a garage door. But, any and all safety features are nice, and if it was not a whole lot more, I would likely do it. That is just because I know murphy's law would take effect, and the day after I purchased the door, one of my kids would fall victim to the pinching. So, I guess it would come down to the difference in price mostly, and the ability of a salesperson to prove to me that the pinching is indeed a possibility. ~A.~

I think you should elaborate a little on pinch resistant....where/type/ etc...

I don't think I would. I've never heard of such a thing. Maybe if you showed me a story of this happening someone or how bad it is, I would consider it.

Exactly what is a "PINCH" resistant garage door? What does the "pinch" mean?

I don't think I would purchase it. I'm assuming pinch resistant so that fingers don't get pinched on raising or lowering.

We have new garage doors and openers and there is no need to have our hands on the doors. We do have the motion sensor at the bottom of the door so the door will auto reverse if something is in that area.

I guess if I used my hands to raise and lower it everyday I might think about pinch resistant but I don't understand why someone would upgrade and not upgrade the entire unit with opener as well.

We upgraded a little over a year ago to new steel insulated doors, new rollers and the works. We spent about $2500 for 1 double door and 1 single door. I am big on upgrading to better quality but would not have added the pinch resistant perk to my order since I use garage door openers.

Good luck.

Can you clarify what you mean? I know there are doors that reverse when they hit an object (or person) to avoid being crushed, but I don't know what you mean by pinching or how it could happen.

I would be interested if the price was not THAT much more than a regular door. I have been pinched and it hurt!! Our automatic garage door opener is broken and I have to close it manually. My finger got caught between sections and I had to raise the door quickly with my other hand to get my finger out. I thought I'd broken it. It was swollen and bruised and I could hardly use it for a day.

I think it would be harder to pinch yourself if you use your automatic opener though. I make sure my kids stay far away from the door too so it doesn't happen to them. Interesting idea though!
