I have a 16 month old and since he was about 4-5 months old he will use a blanket and ball it up for a pillow. What is the age when people start letting their little ones sleep with pillows. I tried a regular pillow for the 1st time today during nap time and he looks so sound asleep in there i have checked on him during his nap..... Im just not sure if he is to young?

What can I do next?

My kids have used pillows since they were about a year old. I usually try to use a pillow that is a little flatter from use.

I use to have little crib pillows at the other end of my daughter's crib. I would always find her sleeping like a little princess with her head on the pillows. It was the funniest thing. She's slept with one for as long as I can remember. (She's going on 18 months now) I know people may not "recommend" her sleeping with a pillow as long as she has been but I believe every child is individual. I use all of these products http://www.swankieblankie.com/ and LOVE them.

I think 16 months is fine for using a pillow. I "made" a small pillow for my kids by cutting an old (so kind of flat) regular size pillow in half (or thirds) and sewing it up and making a pillow case for it. They might even sell toddler pillows in stores. I just think the flatter and smaller pillow is more comfortable for their size.

Nope! I gave my little guy a regular pillow at that age. You don't need to worry about suffocation - it's very similar to when they learn to sleep on their tummies. They're old enough to move out of the way if they are deprived of air at all. It's actually an involuntary reflex during sleep.

So if he's comfy on a pillow, good for him!

My son started using a pillow about the same age. He looked uncomfortable to me b/c his neck would look slouch. So, i saw a toddler memory foam pillow in the one step ahead magazine and ordered one for $30 ish. He did not like it at first, but now loves it. Worth a try if your interested. They also have a website.

I can't remember exactly how old my son was, but he was ready when he started using one of his stuffed animals as a pillow.

I never gave my kids a pillow until they were in a big bed, but that was around 17 months old for us. You should be fine; I would just use a flatter one like the others have said.

I think my girls were 1 or 1.5 when we gave them their first pillow. We were nervous, but like you said, they slept so sound. Now they are four - one likes one flat pillow, and the other uses two regular pillows two throw pillows and also uses her blankets balled up. Pretty funny on how diff their preferences are.

My little one is almost 16 months old, he used a pillow when he was around 10 months old.... but not a regular one. See he had a head cold so he had to pretty much sit up to sleep otherwise he was just too congested, and at the time I still had him in my bed. Well, I had an odd idea that worked and he still uses it kinda. I grabbed my boppy type pillow and used it to prop him up when he was sick! it worked b/c the side were there if he rolled to kinda keep him upright.
So when he started sleeping in the crib again (this was the time of the inital get the babe out of my bed time...) as soon as he was almost better, I put the boppy-type pillow in his bed and he slept very well (he didn't start sleeping through the night until about a week ago)
NOW he starts off sleeping on it, but ends up snuggled inside it, almost like being held, it is the cutest thing!
So, your son isn't too old. I think the "rule" is a year old, but I don't know.
Give him a pillow! :D

My daughters were using pillows at that age ~ I actually bought a little travel pillow for them. I can't remember what my older one had, but my youngest had a princess pillowcase with it! She knew it was her special pillow.

It would be fine for him to start using a pillow. My son started using a toddler pillow about that age. Although I would suggest getting a toddler/children's pillow. They are much flatter, thus a better fit for their smaller bodies. It won't cause neck problems that you might see with a regular adult pillow.
