Picky Picky Picky Eater

My son is so picky, unusually picky I would say. He won't eat bread, meat, cheese, noodles or anything "regular kids" eat. He won't even try a bite, let alone touch it. We are planning on bringing him to therapy, but I am curious to know if there is anyone out there with similar circumstances. Thanks.

What can I do next?

My son will only eat bread I have to bake once a week and cheese as his main staples. He'll eat some random other snacky foods/crackers, etc. but no "regular kid" food. Everyone keeps telling us he'll grow out of it. He's growing and gaining weight, so we're just trying to ride it out, but my instinct tells me I should get professional help. We made progress last night with him holding a french fry. You're not alone!

Yep, we're right there with you. My 3 year old has autism and food sensory issues. He won't eat meats (except chicken nuggets and hot dogs occassionaly) or veggies. We have not done any food therapy but his speech therapy and ECSE seem to be helping a lot. He will now at least try some things before saying no. He used to just refuse everything. I hope therapy goes well for him, hang in there.

I was some what picky as a child as well. The doctor told my mom to stop giving me only the things I would eat. I had to eat what I was given. He said a child wont starve themselves and will eat. Mom said it took a day but then I started eating normal. It sounds like your child is a little worse than I was as a child. You got a lot of good feedback. Good Luck

It may sound odd but my nephew was a really really picky eater only cheese and chicken nugget the dr said to feed him the canned protein drinks becasue wouldnt eat anything else from age 1-5 finally after many dr's saw him they found out he had a massive sinus infection that had been raging that whole time and no one caught it!!! after they started him on anibiotics it cleared up and he began to eat almost everything offered to him. At your next dr visit you might mention it you never know.

Yes, my 9 year-old is like that and he is going through OT for sensory issues and feeding therapy. It is good you are going to have him evaluated. Most likely he has sensory issues and the sooner you deal with it the better. I wish we had gotten our son into therapy much earlier. Good luck.

My son is 2 yrs old and he is VERY picky.

Chicken Nuggets
Toast
Bagels
Fruit
Yogurt
Milk
OJ

He also will not try many things (including desserts) -- our Dr. said as long as he IS eating he will be fine.

Definately get him evaluated if you feel there is something else going on besides being picky. My son does not have sensory issues but also did not like meat, cheese or bread until he turned 4 this summer. Only in the last couple of months has he started eating salami sandwiches. He still does not like cheese and the only noodles he will eat are spaghetti with red sauce. He loves alot of fruit and vegetables so I don't worry to much about the rest plus he drinks his milk.

We've had our share of pickiness from the two older kids. Bottom line is that they became picky because we let them. But once we put our foot down, they are much more agreeable to most foods. When I make a meal, at least one thing is something they will like. So they're not going to starve. Then, they always ask for more of that favorite item. In order to get it (or dessert), they have to take at least one bite of each of the other items on their plate. As with anything else where you try to correct bad behavior, there were a lot of tantrums at first but they are pretty much gone now.

Our son is very picky due to oral sensory issues....the textures of certain food have literally caused him to gag in the past. Our son is seen by both an OT and a SLP...they've really helped decrease some of his sensory issues. I hope your son will also improve with therapy. Hang in there. Oh...and know that when people tell you he'll eat those food if/when he gets hungry enough that they mean well. We used to hear that all the time with our son...it wasn't a hunger issue...he could have been starving and still would not eat them. He's still very picky, but it's improving slowly wiht therapy. Good luck.

Good for you in asking the question. He may very well have sensory processing issues that can be addressed through therapy.

If you're looking for a good feeding therapy clinic, email me at ____@____.com son has Down syndrome and the clinic we go to does that sort of therapy and they are just wonderful!
