I need ideas for my 4 1/2 year old daughter to bring for lunch to school. She is very picky and I she is tired of the cereal and sandwiches. Any ideas out there?

Is fruit and crackers consider a lunch? she likes that a lot but I am sure that she will get tired of it also!

What can I do next?

My daughter loves smoothies. I have a wand blender and I usually mix-up some fruit, yogurt and/or ice cream, and baby oatmeal, but you could put just about anything in there and they wouldn't know the difference.....

What about fruit, crackers and then either add pieces of cheese or peanut butter to dip the apples in. They sell these really cool packs of 6 snack sized tubs of peter pan or jiffy peanut butter at jewel now. My daughter is 3 3/4 and quite picky too. She likes apples, yogurt, crackers - so just about the same thing. But with the yogurt, I figure she's getting some protein. She also loves lunchables. If your daughter won't eat a sandwich, would she eat grilled cut up pieces of chicken? I just try to keep everything plain to keep my daughter happy. For example, she'll eat buttered noodles and will eat meatballs as long as I heat them up and put them on the side. she really doesnt like tomato sauce unless I make quite plain with penne noodles which are easier for her to eat. But she just goes through these spells where she only wants yogurt, diced peaches or apples. It's tough but a lot of these things she likes are pretty healthy, and she's very healthy. I just hope when my daughter is school aged that she doesn't do what I did to my lunch that my mom used to pack for me. I'd dump it back in the fridge and take the whole box of Little Debbies Star Crunches and empty it into my lunch bag. Good luck to ya!

I had a picky eater who wouldn't eat any peanut butter and one who wouldn't eat anything but lol. The picky one loved bagles and cream cheese. also loved yogurt. the cheese and crackers thing is fine. they sell lots of lunchables with just that in them. also good are strips of lunch meat rolled up. and tortilla's with things like peanut butter, cheese, cream cheese etc. Good luck.

Try wraps & pinwheels. My daughter is a very picky kindergartner, and she likes these as do my 22 month old twins. We made them with a nutritionist at a healthy snack/lunch workshop at her school in the fall. Just use any tortilla or wrap, spread some cream cheese on it, sprinkle some shredded mozzarella (or any cheese) on that, lay down a slice or two of thin cut deli turkey (or any meat), and then roll the whole thing up tightly around a pickle spear. Store it in Saran wrap in the fridge - they keep for several days if you're making them ahead of time. When you pack it for her, though, cut it into 1/2" slices. They look like pinwheels and make for a nice, clean finger food. They look fun, so my daughter will always try them even if it's not the usual. We've done PB&J wrapped around a pretzel rod, peanut butter or nutella wrapped around apple slices, hummus & turkey with sprouts, ham with honey mustard, and occasionally I can even sneak in finely diced cucumbers & carrots. If I use the burrito size tortilla or wrap, she can only eat maybe a half, but the other half is good enough for me to snack on. I even put a variety of them out at a party for adults and people thought I was on a gourmet pro! The spinach and sun-dried tomato wraps are fun for color, too.

My daughter used to also eat anything with a toothpick. I would get the fancy kind for cocktails - like a palm tree, flamingo, or sword, and she would stab a carrot slice and dip it in ranch. Or a little square of a sandwich. Or grapes and dip them in yogurt. It was like a magical utensil for us!

I think fruit and crackers are fine for lunches, too!

My daughter comes home from school and usually has only eaten her carrots and fruit. She says that she runs out of time. We finish her lunch as a snack and she does take an am snack usually goldfish or pretzels. I am concerned some days because she comes home crabby and tired. I think it is because she is hungry. What about cheese or applesauce or yogurt? Cheese and yogurt seem to at least fill my kids up for a little while.
My suggestion is more related to both of your childrens diets, I have a solution for you and your picky eaters. Have you ever heard of Juice Plus? It is a whole food supplement, 17 fruits and vegetables in a capsule, chewable or gummie recommended by my pediatrician and OB group and has tons of research. I am not a sales person, just a concerned mom, who couldn't help but share Juice Plus with everyone I know. I will never be without it for my family. For more info go to my website www.juiceplus.com/+al43103 or feel free to call me at ###-###-####. In health, A. L

We do a lot of soy or sunflower butter (our preschool is nut free) and jelly sandwiches or a bagel and cream cheese. I think fruit with crackers sounds fine - maybe add some yogert or string cheese. I read someplace an idea to update the old standard pjb by getting hot dog buns - on one side spread the peanut or soy butter, spread jelly on the other and stick a banana in the middle.
