Phone and Internet Service

My AT&T phone and internet bill seems to be getting progressively higher. It is $124.95 this month for all distance phone service and mid level internet service. The internet portion is $34.99 and the phone portion is $55.45. The rest is made up of surcharges, fees and taxes. Doesn't this seem really high? Can anyone give me names of other companies they like or ways to reduce this bill. If this is a fair price to be paying I'd love to know that too. Thanks for your help.

Hi T.,
Wow, we pay that price for expanded cable, internet, unlimited local and long distance home phone, and our 2 cell phones.
Cable and hi-speed internet is the 'watch N surf' bundle for about $76 including taxes. Then with hi-speed internet you can get an internet home phone service--we use Sunrocket (this hooks up to your modem and you have unlimited use even long distance) and pay $199/yr, which comes out to about $17/month and if the promotion is still on, when you sign up you get 2 free uniden cordless phones. We have had them for 2 years and never had issues. Our cell phones are Sprint and we have been with them a long time and it is all about negotiating--we have 400 anytime min.(no frills--we use only when not at home) for my phone and my husband and pay under $40 (including tax)--$30 for mine and $10 for the additional phone. T., that does seem high. What are you doing for TV service right now? You could try Verizon FiOS if it is available in your area. Then you'd get all three for not much more than you are paying for the two services.

Time Warner Cable also has a deal for all three for about $100 a month. I find their DVR gives me trouble sometimes and don't care much for their customer service, but if money is an issue, you may want to check them out as it is probably the cheapest way to go.

A lot of people are just getting rid of their land phone lines all together and just using their cell phones since most cell plans have free long distance. But that will depend on what else in your home is relying on your phone lines.

Do you have high speed internet now? We use Vonage for our phone service it is 29.99 for everything all long distance caller ID,call waiting etc. The only requirement is to have high speed internet because the phone is hooked up through your modem. If At&t is High speed then all you would have to do is call Vonage for the phone service, cancel your phone through At&T then you would only be paying around 64.00 a month, if not you could switch to Time Warner for internet. We have our high speed internet through Time Warner our internet is 49.95. You can go to www.vonage.com and check out the phone service and call them to see if you can use At&T for internet, this will be huge savings for you.

Do you use cell phones too? Like Joanna mentioned, a lot of people are ditching their home phones. We switched to strictly cell phones and our bills went down drastically.
And we still don't use all our minutes.
It also cut down on all the telemarketing and charity calls (a perk that I hope will last).

Hi T.,

The internet portion seems about right. I can't say about the phone part because I'm not sure what you have included in that. Do you have nationwide long distance for that? It still seems kinda high, even if you do. Plus, if you add those two together, that only $90, which means that your surcharges, taxes and fees are $35! That's equal to your internet service price! That part seems high to me.

We have an "All Verizon" household now, with FiOs TV & internet, phone and wireless services. Our bill is ~$350, BUT we have TV, with HD and a DVR, the highest speed internet, phone (including all long-distance w/in Texas and $0.05/min for the rest of the US), two cell phones and wireless broadband service.

For just our phone and internet, we have 44.99 & 44.95, respectively (89.94), with 17.56 and 1.65 (19.21 total) in taxes, fees and surcharges for that part (which would be 109.15 total for phone and internet). That isn't that far off yours, but we do have the 15MB downloads (very nice... once you have it, it's hard to go back!).

We've been very happy with all our service except for our cell phones. We used to be AT&T for mobile phones and rarely had a problem but with Verizon it seems like we get more problems with service (however, the wireless broadband service is very reliable and great).

I don't know if that helps, but I do know that we got some kind of break for getting everything from Verizon and putting it all on one bill. It's kind of a shocker when it's all together like that, but it does help you to see what you are paying for all these services.

T.,
We use Verizon Fios and LOVE it. I don't know if it's available in you area but if it is you should check into it. We pay about that for cable TV and internet (we don't have a home phone) but I know Verizon has that available. All the companies are expensive and I know AT&T is one of the highest. Good luck.

We have SBC, owned by AT&T now if I remember right. When we called about our bill several months ago they gave us a special rate that they were offering new customers. We call every year and ask for a rate change when it expires. We pay $14.95/mth for our DSL through them right now. We don't pay that much for our home phone either, but I honestly don't know what it is. So you may want to call and ask what rate plans they have available for you to switch to. Like I said, we call every year when ours expires and get readded.
