Hey Moms,

I am wondering if any of you Moms have had a regular period while nursing. I have had a regular heavy period while nursing my son for the last 6 months and then all of a sudden last week Thurs. I started spotting and now its Wednes and I am still spotting a tiny bit. I have light cramps too. I keep thinking I'm gonna finally start and then I don't. I wondered if any of you Moms experienced something like this. I am still nursing my son 1-2 times a day. I am slowly trying to wean him. He is 8 months now and big and needs much more than I can supply.

What can I do next?

Hi Marcia,

I started having clock-work regular periods while exclusively breastfeeding my son. They started at 11 weeks post-partum and are still going. He's also still only brestfed (no solids) right now. He'll start on them in a couple more weeks.

My best friend has 4 children, with each one she didn't start having periods until she was weaning, and they had been on solids for awhile. They are also erratic for her... sometimes once a month, sometimes she skips a month.

Unfortunatly we're all so different you won't ever know by others experiences. What's nice to know is that it's all "normal" so you really don't have anything to worry about.

Hormone changes can cause a change in menstrual flow.

If you are weaning your son that could mess with your cycles. As the prolactin (milk hormone that also regulates your cycle) Levels in your body change your periods will too. Usually though Prolactin levels will decrease as you wean causing a period to show up.

I think I would take a HPT personally....but I'm nuerotic when I'm nursing because I don't have a period until about a year post partum.

I had regular periods the entire time I nursed my daughter. My friend, however, did not have a period while she nursed her daughter. I think it really depends on the person. Best of luck to you!

When I nursed my son, I didn't have any periods for 13 months. I actually had to take hormone pills to start my periods.
I am three months into breastfeeding my daughter and still have not had a period

yes - I had regular periods while nursing. they started seven weeks after my baby was born. They were pretty normal.. Most women do not have periods while nursing but some do..

Warning -- when my daughter ws 9 months old I had two very light periods in one month-- about 10 days apart. I thought this was a goofy month and all was safe... WRONG... I got pregnant.. while exclusively nursing- in a month when I had 2 light periods 10 days apart..

Many people don't have normal periods while nursing...
hence the WARNING>>>> YOU CAN GET PREGNANT WHILE EXCLUSIVELY NURSING so make sure you use precautions if you don't want to be.

I started getting regular periods while nursing at about 6 months. i am still nursing and my periods are normal but any change in nursing can mess with your period because every time you nurse your body releases prolactin which actually contributes to not having your period. but if your not nursing as much you dont release as much prolactin which is why you eventually do get your period. just know that decreasing or increasing nursing will always change your period in some ways so theres no need to be alarmed.
