Peed Mattress

This March my husband and I purchased an expensive king sized mattress. It is a latex topped innerspring lebeda. Problem is my daughter has wet my bed multiple times now. Of course the only time she does it is the few times I don't have the "pee sheet" on it. I took the sheets off tonight to wash them and I realized my mattress reeks! I plan on keeping it at least seven to ten years so I need to fix this, please help!

What can I do next?

Take the sheets off and then sprinkle borax on the pee spots and then lightly spritz with water. Gently rub it in a little and let it dry. Then vacuum it up. Even helps to reduce the discoloration from the urine. Better then fabreeze - although you can try that too.

They do make a cover for king size mattress although its a bit pricey. but might be worth it since its a new mattress.

In addition to the cleaning methods, If you can take the mattress outside, like on a deck if you have one, to dry out in the sun, it works wonders. We did this with our daughter's mattress on more than one occasion...(after cleaning it of course!)

A mixture of half apple cider vinegar and half hydrogen peroxide works great. put it in a spray bottle and spray on the pee spot let air dry and it kills the smell. Also target makes great waterproof mattress covers! They aren't the typical latex top. it's just like a regular mattress pad, They work. I have them on my kids bed and mine for when they come in during the night for a snuggle. It totally stops the pee from getting on the mattress!

A few other options: soak the spot in vinegar. Let it really soak into the mattress. Do this in the morning and then flip the mattress before you go to bed so you are not sleeping in a wet spot. The vinegar smell will go away once it is dry and it will eliminate the pee smell.
or
Buy a solution called Kids and Pets. You can get it through Amazon.com. It got the animal urine smell out of our carpets when nothing else would.

baking soda over the whole area 24 hours. Vacuum off and reapply until you smell nothing. Works on cat pee too.

I feel your pain! I have had/still have to deal with cat/dog/kid pee. My friend FINALLY gave me the best thing to remove the smell. I had tried the vinegar thing, but that smell lingers and I hate that smell -- we tried that on our carpet and wish I would have never done that. We tried natures miracle, shampooing the carpet and nope nothing.

We bought my son a new mattress and of course before we got the new mattress pad on it (Target was sold out of them and I got a rain check but of course he had an accident)

So what I use is this:

16 oz. (2 cups) hydrogen peroxide
2 tsp. baking soda
2 small drops liquid dishwashing soap (Dawn, Palmolive, etc.)

Place all ingredients in a glass jar or bowl. Gently stir--do not beat or shake--until baking soda is dissolved.

If urine is fresh, be sure to blot up any excess urine with dry paper towels or a dry washcloth before the next step.

Pour mixture over urine spot, making sure to cover the entire spot. Allow mixture to completely soak the area being treated. Do not rub or scrub! Let sit for 24 hours without disturbing.

After 24 hours, take clean paper towels or a clean, white washcloth and blot up any remaining liquid (Again, do not rub or scrub.).

Allow area to air dry completely. If you are treating carpet, you can vacuum over the area when dry.

Makes 16 oz. (2 cups) of solution.

GENERAL TIPS

The strength of hydrogen peroxide required for the recipe is the 3% solution. This strength is what is commonly found at pharmacies, discount stores and grocery stores.
The solution is most effective within one hour of mixing, but you can keep a batch of solution in a spray bottle to have on hand for fresh accidents--it will work just fine.
Do not enclose the mixture in an airtight container (a spray bottle is fine, though), or you could have a big mess on your hands! The reason for this is because when the ingredients are combined they release oxygen. Remember making "volcanoes" out of baking soda and vinegar when you were a little kid? Similar principle here.
For really tough odors, you may have to treat the area more than once. Carpet, furniture and mattresses typically require 1-2 treatments. Concrete, wood, tile and other hard surfaces usually need 3-5 treatments (1 treatment per day).
For concrete and other hard surfaces, you want to make enough of the recipe to completely cover the stain. Pour or spray the solution on and let it soak, soak, soak. Do not mop or wipe up. Let it sit for 24 hours (depending on the humidity level, it will usually evaporate during this time). Repeat the treatment once a day for 3-5 days.
If you purchased the recipe to treat an oriental rug, please use extreme caution. Sometimes the dyes used in the rugs are not colorfast. We are not responsible for damage to rugs.

We do not recommend using the recipe on hardwood floors because we can't recommend saturating the wood. When a pet has urinated on hardwood, the urine has seeped deep into the floors. To neutralize the urine, you would need to apply the recipe so that it would seep deep into the floors as well. Due to the possibility of warping, we just can't safely recommend this.

So when this mixture hits the pee spots it will foam up so you know when you have gotten the entire spot. the recipe also states for mattress to saturate them. I did that and let it dry all day long and put a fan on it and it was good to go for bed that evening.

I hope this helps you and any other people who read this post.

Good Luck!

I haven't tried it.. but my friend swears by hydrogen proxide. pour enough to soak down, leave it for a few hours and soak up what comes out with a dry towel. This is what she does for her childs bed.

Okay, first, go buy a mattress cover. The kind that zips all the way around the mattress and is waterproof. This would've saved your mattress. I have them on every mattress in the house, and I know my mattresses are clean (and these also save you from dust mites, bed bugs, etc.)

I agree with both the pet stain/smell removers and the baking soda. Be persistent, and the smell will go away.

But definitely invest in a mattress cover. If you can't afford one, get a few plastic drop clothes and duct tape them around your mattress. You then can cover it with a regular mattress cover, and you can't even tell you've got plastic on.

I've also had good luck with baking soda. I used it on my daughter's mattress which was very very soaked and smelly, and I also used it on my son's mattress which was covered in cat urine (that darn cat). I used a lot of it, scrubbed it in with a wet cloth, let it dry, and vacuumed it. It's amazing, both mattresses are as good as new now. Good luck! :-)

You can try Nature's Miracle, it's sold at most pet supply stores and I think Babies R Us, but I have found 1 part vinegar + 3 parts water to be a cheaper solution (pun intended)! good luck!

I've taken my carpet shampoo'er and used it on our mattresses. You'd be amazed how dirty they are!

At Walmart in the air freshener area they have small bottles of a pump spray that is for killing urine smells. The one I buy is a small pump spray and is a white bottle with some blue green writing on it. It has a minimal odor is works very well. If they don't have it where you are then there are many many options in the pet section that are for pet urine odors that would work just as well.
