Pee-Pee Accidents Kept Secret

Hi, I have 2 daughters ages 4 years and 15 months. My 4 year old has been fully potty trained for almost 2 years already, but lately has been having "accidents" and not telling me. I find out by the stench that will knock you out because she does it on my rug in spots that are not usually seen if I am not looking. When I ask her about it she tells me that she couldn't make it to the bathroom and didn't tell me because she didn't want me to be angry with her. I tell her that I won't be mad and that she has to tell me when this happens, and that she has to go to the bathroom as soon as she feels the need to. So my question is, does anyone have any advice as to why they think these accidents are happening and how to resolve the issue? Also, while on the topic, I cannot seem to get the smell out of the house...does anyone have any suggestions on the cleaning of my brand new rugs that have these stains on them? Thank you all.

What can I do next?

I know how you feel. I have an almost 4 year old that I had to put back in pull-ups. She was completely trained and then just suddenly stopped going on the potty. She has ruined my brand new chairs by having accidents on them. They have stains all over them and smell. I just bought them a few months ago. I haven't been able to find anything that actually works. I can't seem to get the smell or stains out. Sorry that I can't help but let me know if you get any good advice that works for you. Hope everything works out for you.

I am a nurse, and if these accidents are something new, maybe you should talk to your pediatrician, it could be a urinary tract infection. One other cause might be if there have been any emotional changes lately with her, as they can set her back a little bit. As for the carpet, there is a great product, it is all natural, smells like oranges, but of course the name escapes me right now!! Hope this helps, good luck.

I would definitely take a urine sample to your dr just to rule out a UTI and go from there. SHe may have an infection - better to play it safe - and then if no UTI, you can work on the problem from there.

natures miracle with or without the oxyclean is great for that.. you can get it at any big pet store like petco or petsmart... if you have or can rent a carpet cleaner you can use it in those too
otherwise follow the directions on the bottle if just doing spots

i can only help with the rug issue, but it does work...you can either go 1/2 and 1/2 water/vinegar like one woman had suggested (which does work wonders on just about anything...especially smells), but i couldn't stand the smell of the vinegar constantly being around. if this could be an issue for you, you can try simple green. it's an environmentally safe product, so it's ok for the kids, and any pets. my daughter makes tons of smelly messes on the carpet (rarely pee-pee, but it has happened when being watched by my MIL and not being changed and completely soaking through). we use it in our carpet cleaner, but 1st we pull the tip of the spray bottle out and it sprays in foam form, then we go over it with the rug cleaner, adding i think it says 1/4 cup, or something like that. my whole basement (where the rug is) smelled great! oh, we chose to get the lemon scented one...not sure how great the original one smells though. you can get it in home depot, and it's about $5. it's great, you can use it on anything and everything. sometimes we even use it in our laundry. good luck. hope it helps.

As far as the smell....Take a spray bottle and fill with 1/2 water and 1/2 white vinegar. Spray and soak the stain. Let it sit for a bit and then blot up the moisture with papertowels, and then it air dry. The vinegar smell will be gone as soon as its dry and so should the peepee smell. :) If its not, repeat the process again.

Definitely check for the UTI with the doctor. My daughter began getting recurring UTI's at the age of 3. Her urine always had a strong smell because I couldn't get her to drink enough water, but she really only wet herself not furniture or carpeting. She useed to hide it because she was embarrased and would actually tell me that most of the time she didn't know she was wet adn never fely any discomfort because of the UTI's. She ended up seeing a pediatric urologist and we found out she has a "spinning-top urethra" and this was the cause of the the UTI's. Best of Luck!!
