Pediatrician Recommendations in West/Northwest San Antonio, TX

My husband and I will be moving back to San Antonio in mid-September (USAF-family). We've previously lived in Schertz (stationed at Randolph) and this time we're looking out west/northwest around Helotes (going to be stationed at Lackland). We're moving back with a 3-year-old daughter and what will be a 1-2 week old son.

Do you have a recommendation for a pediatrician? I am looking for someone male or female in private practice that has an inviting office, friendly staff, is supportive of the parents' decisions, is up-to-date on current parenting/medicine, and can do same day sick appointments. I desire a pedi who's supportive of attachment parenting, a daughter who drinks soy milk due to lactose sensitivities (i.e., doesn't insist we find a way to switch her to cow's milk), supports parents who do not subscribe to the CIO-method, etc.

Also, I am not looking for someone who's been practicing long enough to have been my pedi.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After looking at houses, we decided to move back to the Schertz/Cibolo area. So now I'm looking for suggestions of a good pedi and pedi DDS in the Schertz/Cibolo area. Thank you!

I would reccommend Helotes Pediatrics. Dr's Laura Tamayo and Wendy Gideon are fantastic. My kids have been going there since I got out of the military and we have never had any problems.

My friend is a pedi nurse at Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital downtown. She told me that if she were on the NW side of town, she would definitely go with Dr. Angie Hilger at PediDocs on Hwy 151. She said she is great with the kids and really knows her stuff. Here is their information:

Hi J. - I know it would be a bit of a drive for you, but ABCD Pediatrics in Stone Oak is AMAZING! They also have an office in Schertz. They meet all of your criteria.
Their website is: abcdpediatrics.com
We absolutely LOVE them, and they are so worth the drive.
Good luck with your move!

We live outside San Antonio, DH works at Lackland AFB too. We use Castroville Family Physicians in Castroville-about 20 miles west of SA. Dr. Mary Nguyen Poole is our family doctor....she's not old, but there is an older Dr. that practices there too. I've never had an issue getting a same day appt. and never waited more than 15 minutes to get in to the actual doctor. Their office is rather old, but everyone is friendly.

We use soy milk, don't do CIO, use many alternative methods, longterm breastfeed, limited vaccination. We've found her to be very open to parents calling the shots and serving as more of an adviser, she has a great rapport with kids and is mother to an autistic child herself and a long term breast feeder, so she's very sensitive to people's feelings on these things.

I've also heard some really good things about Dr. Mary Alfonso at Christus Santa Rosa on HWY 151....same kinds of openness, etc. I belong to a playgroup where many are attachment parents, more natural lifestyles, etc and these are the two most recommended doctors within the group.

i took my kids to helotes pediatrics: dr wendy gideon & dr laura tamayo. good at fast visits, can get you in same day if you need to. could diagnose an ear infection in like 2 seconds. both are around my age (i am 39).located on bandera rd just outside loop 1604. when our insurance changed..

we started at children of texas pediatrics : dr Jose clay-flores and dr james donnell. both very into telling you all your options and taking time to explain what's going on. they get you in same day, their office staff is very nice. located on bandera rd just inside loop 1604, next to an apple tree daycare and the little gym of helotes, and a mathnasium tutor center. both drs are around my age. bothe left large practices to start a practice where patients come first. dr donnell's sister is also a ped, i can't remember her last name? dr clay-flores was homeschooled and both drs. have been supportive of my parenting/homeschool style.

I highky recommend helotes pediatrics. The only missing criteria is that they are not old but the plus side is that they are very up to date. Iam very pleased with their services.

I heard the opposite of ABCD pediatrics in Stone Oak. My cousin went to them 5 years ago and quickly left. The dr would not answer all of their 'first parents' questions and told them that they'd have to make a second appointment if they wanted their questions answered.

Too bad you're not back in Shertz. There is a great little pedi office in Live Oak, but that's quite a drive from where you will be. Sorry - don't know of any places that side of town.
