PCOS And Trying to Get Pregnant

Hi moms! I am 30 yrs old and have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). I am trying to conceive and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

I am unable to use fertility tests because I get a positive reading no matter what. (my LH levels are always high due to PCOS). I am currently taking metformin (glucophage) and I have heard that helps as it forces a woman to ovulate.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Please share stories of women you know or yourself if you have PCOS and were able to get preggers!

Thanks so much in advance!

So What Happened?

Hi there! Thanks to everyone so far for the advice and stories! Just wanted to comment on some things and clarify another. I am not sure losing weight is an option for me, as I am 5'7" and weigh 128lbs. My doctor actually told me my weight is just a little below average for my height. So, will that help that I am a normal weight and exercise regularly? I assume it would! Thanks again.

I have PCOS, and I am currently pregnant with baby #4!
My first baby was a complete surprise, #2 and #3, we had to take clomid to conceive, this one came as a complete shock to us! We had tried 7 clomid cycles about a year ago, then was told by a fertility specialist, that our chances of conceiving without IVF were slim to none, so I began dieting as we waited to figure out what we would do. I lost a little over 100 pounds, and found out #4 was on the way!!!

I have also heard that the low carb diets can help women with PCOS while trying to conceive.

Good Luck!!

Hi Kim. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18 almost 10 years ago. Since then I have miscarried 3 times and I have a son that is 2. I never have been on Metformin. Although I believe that you should start out slow as far as the fertility drugs go. The closer to natural the better. (But that doesn't always work.) You don't have to answer this but, most PCOS patients do not ovulate on a regular basis which puts them not getting their period on a monthly basis, which then cause cyst ruptures (very painful). So if you are one of the patients that don't get their period on a monthly basis here is what I suggest. Be on birth control up until you are ready to try. Then go a month and see if you can do it naturally, if not then.... (if you do not get your next period and you are not pregnant, talk to your doctor about Clomid (most ins plans will cover, and it also has a generic- just make sure the generic was made in the USA not India). What they should do is put you on Provera (norm-7 day supply) which is a progestrin drug that will induce you to have your period, after that triggers they will have you start the Clomid(norm 5 day supply). Remember that Clomid can cause twins!!! Good luck to you, if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler

I am 10 weeks pregnant after only 4 months of charting and 2 months of temping. I have PCOS and rarely have regular periods. I used the charting and did a lot of research on how to determine when I was close to ovulation in an attempt to conceive. I conceived on day 42 of my cycle (lol as you can see, not the average day 14 that most women ovulate!).

I strongly encourage you to read the book and learn as much as you can about *your* cycle, figure out the signs that determine when you might be ovulating, and give it a shot. You really have nothing to lose, other than the $19 it costs to buy the book.

Good luck to you!

My little sister JUST went through this and is finally pregnant after 2 years of trying. She was on metformin, clomed and others. She finally had to have ovarian drilling done and they told her that her best chance to get pregnant was within 12 months after the surgery, or she could not be able to conceive. So, she has the surgery in Nov. and was confirmed pregnant in Jan. She is now past the 15 weeks and is doing great! So there is hope!!!! Have you gone to a fertility clinic? She went to one in Valpo INdiana and said they were the best doctors and nurses ever!
I wish you all the luck!

I have PCOS and I was able get preganant with and without assistance. The first time was a complete surprise, I missed a pill three days in a row, and I needed to go on Metformin to have the second. It took me about 9 months before I concieved my second (He is turning 1 this month). I was happy with the results but it takes time.

When my DR told me about the PCOS I was devistated but there are so many options out there. She recommended following the South Beach Stage 2 foods. They are Carb Light and along with the metformin (positive side affect- weight loss) I was about the lose about 45 pounds. The metformin has some gastro side effects that go away after awhile, read the pamphlet on the prescription.

I wish you well.

Hi!!! My husband & I tried for 2 years for our second child ( I am currently 18 weeks pregnant!!!) We went through all the fertility testing & discovered I have PCOS. We went through a year of fertility drugs & shots and a lot of stress & nothing worked. They wanted to refer us to a infertility specialist but we decided not to go. Instead we researched herbal remedies online & found www.nativeremedies.com we bought the Fertile XX for women & my very next cycle we conceived our second child!!! I highly recommend giving it a try!!!

I also have PCOS. I read a book called "Healing Syndrome O" and it was very helpful. It also tells you what to change in your diet to help you conceive. We went through all of the fertility testing, tried 3 cycles of Clomid, ovulation sticks, and was just about to try the injectable fertility medication when our insurance stopped covering our costs. It took another 3 years (4 years total), but we were able to conceive on our own without any fertility drugs. I would definitely read the book, it has great information in it. We are also now expecting our second child without the use of any fertility drugs. It can happen for you too! :)

I was also diagnosed with PCOS, went through the not-so-wonderful round of fertility drugs, including the glucophage, chlomid, injectibles and ultimately conceived my twins after about a year(through IUI). What I think really helped me to conceive though was towards the end of that year, I started accupunture, changed my diet (gluten free, no dairy) and just started to relax more, did yoga, and I really think that contributed to my success. There are a lot of great books out there and there are a lot of things that you can try on your own to get your body ready to conceive.
GOOD LUCK!!!!

I was 30 with PCOS when I had my daughter. I tried Metformin and it made me feel terrible. My RE put me on Chlomid and it took awhile to find the right dosage for me. After we found the right dosage that made me ovulate, he suggested putting me on birth control for 3 months to regulate and then on the month that I came off, I was to chart my temperature and he would give me Chlomid. I was skeptical of the birth control, but it worked. You can get preggers with PCOS. It is hard to have the fertility issues and it seems that everyone around you is getting pregnant, but I want you to know that you are not alone. Good luck and God bless.

With your update about your weight, and with past entries by you about Arbonne, you most likely have the answer in your Arbonne catalog. PCOS is caused by estrogen dominance, not necessarily by your weight. check out www.johnleemd.com and a 40 minute recorded call on the helpful links page of my website www.lizsmith.myarbonne.com. I realize you already have an arbonne rep, but my information, coming from surviving cancer, may fill in some information for you and your rep!
Check out my other recent posts to other questions, too, for some basics.
Blessings to you,
L.
