My doc suspects Pcos. She has prescribed me birth control pill to help regulate my period and lower my high testosterone levels. I am hesitant of the pill. Can you tell me what has worked for you? I already take medication for anxiety/depression and because I am overweight I want to avoid any weight gain from the b.c. pill. I would appreciate any advice!

What can I do next?

Poly-Cystic Ovary Syndrom is complicated. It involves your entire body. PCOS will cause to to be heavy and it is more difficult to control your weight because of it. You also have a greater chance of developing diabetes and heart disease.

My daughter has it so I did some research years ago. Do some research and get some facts.

Ask for the lowest dose possible- called "ultra low dose". I have primary ovarian failure, so I take the pill as hormone replacement therapy. There are several manufacturers, but I take the generic for Aviane. So far, no real bad side effects. Hope this helps.

I took the pill for pcos and it's a temporary fix. When I went off of it I didn't have a period for 6 months. After a few years of dealing with irratic periods I went to a midwife who tested my iodine levels and they were low. I took iodine supplements for 2 years and that helped a lot. Then I went off of that and got some hormone testing done. I started taking progesterone (pills at first and then natural bio identical cream) for two years. Now I take nothing and my cycles and weight are regulated.

With pcos the key is finding balance. Balance in your hormones and balance in your eating. Watch your sugar, a diet like south beach will help you more than low calorie.

Do some research and find a dr that listens to what you want.

Good luck!

Pcos responds well to herbal medicine without the undesirable of effects of bc pills. Your area has a few excellent Chinese medicine/herbalists/acupuncturists. Inner harmony and touch of ginger are two good ones. Try google or acufinder to locate. All the best. K.

Oral contraceptives, well the right ones, can work wonders for PCOS. Ask for one that is anti-androgenic (that won't raise testosterone levels).
