I'm having a small birthday party for my son who will be 8. He has invited a few of his classmates. I'm at a loss as to what to do to entertain them for a few hours. We're having pizza and cake. Any suggestions on some fun games for them to play? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Take them to a local state park. You could have the pizza/cake there AND go exploring. I did an overnight like this with 8 boys and they had the time of their life!! A big plastic bin of frisbees, balls etc. We went on a night hike, walked some pretty hard trails and cooked on an open fire (they were responsible for the composition of their "foil" dinner-that was a hoot!) They still talk about how much fun it was. Your son is a perfect age for this! Have fun!

Depends on what he likes...pirates? Do a treasure hunt. sports? have a few short games. Legos? Have them out for them to create. movies? Have one on and pop some popcorn.

In my experience....mom of two boys, 9 and 6....I have never needed to have particular "games" for them to play. I put out some nerf guns, put out some sports balls (soccer, basketball, baseball) and then let them run off and have fun. I always have sweaty boys by the end of the party. Sweaty boys = lots of fun!

Treasure hunts or scavenger hunts are always fun...

For a treasure hunt, hide clues around the yard or house.... one clue leads to another, and eventually they find the "treasure" .... goodie bags or a small treat. The kids take turns reading the clues and figuring out where to go.

A scavenger hunt... make up a list of things easily found in the yard.... after they collect them, they get a prize.

If you have an inexpensive digital camera, make it a photo scavenger hunt... then upload the pictures for the kids to see.

Let them build a "fort" out of chairs, sheets, clothesline, etc..... let them have free play for a while with it.... if there is a theme for the party, build that into the fort...

Set up some different "carnival" type games... there are a bunch you can do at little or no cost.... tossing a ping pong ball into a cup... line several cups at different distances (away from the children, not across in a line) so the farther ones are more points. Let them take turns, and have them keep score. The person with the highest score after a certain number of tries wins a small prize (make sure they all win a prize by the end, though.) A bean bag toss is an easy one to do with that....

Here's some suggestions, there are different ideas for different ages, also.
